Winamp 2.71 or 2.666 - which is best?

I took many warnings to heart and skipped downloading Winamp 2.7, as I heard it was very buggy and simply not as good as 2.666.

Now I haven't heard as much complaining about 2.71 - is it a good choice to upgrade my 2.666 to this new version of should I just stick to whats been workin' for me?

I found no differences between 2.7 and 2.71. They both had the same problems that cause me to go back to 2.65. I never had 2.666 so I can't compare.

In my opinion, 2.71 is the best, 2.65 is second best, and 2.5e is third best. And yes, 2.71 fixes a ton of bugs that were in 2.666 and 2.7.

I use my WinAmps for broadcasting, so perhaps this is superfluous. However, having tried both WinAmp 2.7 and 2.71 and finding them both crashy as hell (though the sound was awesome improvement), I have returned to the fantastically stable version 2.65 - which allows me up-times of between 3 to 7 days in a Win98 enviornment. I found that 2.666 and 2.7 were both buggy for me... With that in mind, I upgraded from 2.64 (skipped 2.65) to 2.7 sans the new decoder. I waited until 2.71 until I tried the new decoder because the playlist loading problem had been fixed. Sooo... 2.71 works like a champ! :)

I try all the new versions when released, but I always end up reinstalling 2.5e. It's always been (for me) the most stable. I do use the latest vis_avs.dll and the CDReader plugin though.

i've had winamp crash once over all the years i've been using it. and it only died when another program killed every other active program on the machine. damn win98... anywho, winamp has racked up some ridiculous uptimes on my machines over the years. it usually only stops running when the machine goes down for a restart or the occasional hardware upgrade.

I had _real_ problems with 2.666 - it crashed as much as anything I've every known (yes, inc. MS), but 2.7 was ok, and 2.71 is perfect - crashed once since I got it when it was first out, and that was probably my 'non-standard' os...
Will 3 be as good? Hope so - the anticipation's making me go crazy......:)

Guess I mostly agree with that, but there are usually always bugs in new versions. Most of them are because the programmers are trying to make it better, but it's a tough job (considering all the different configurations their users have). I've skipped a few versions, but things are progressing so fast now, that I want to stay "state of the art". Particulary with AVS, which I have an insane interest.

v2.71
Time of usage: a week.
Crashes & freezes: 1
Comment: Improvements, I admit, but frightens me a bit with one crash in just a week of use (AVS went nuts, AVS went bye-bye).

v2.7
Time of usage: 3 weeks
Crashes & freezes: on average 3 times a day
Comment: Vast improvements since the crappy v2.65 (which cuased me to switch completely to Sonique), but new stability problems popped up: most often is when my Norton U complain about OLEThreadWindow whenever I close Winamp.

v2.666
Time of usage: 20 minutes
Crashes & freezes: 2
Comment: After using Sonique for 2 months, I went to find out if Winamp has improved at all, but two crashes in 20 minutes stopped me from playing any audio.

v2.65
Time of usage: 3 1/2 months
Crashes & freezes: 0
Comment: Excellient stability, it used to be my main player till I discovered and was hooked to Sonique.

v2.63
Time of usage: 1/2 month
Crashes & freezes: 3
Comment: Um, well, sorta good-ish stability. The first was when AVS went nuts and froze Winamp, then it repeated a week later, and just before I upgraded to v2.65 the Winamp agent caused a "page fault".

2.71 has been working good for me. 2.7 killed my computer every damn day. I couldnt run it without having to restart.

were can i go to get old version of winamp, like 2.65?

All the way from 2.5 up to 2.7 winamp was very buggy for me but now I have no problems what-so-ever :p

Winamp has never crashed on me, and the only bugs I've even noticed were the flickering pointer and AVS crashing in fullscreen.

/thinks I'm blind ;)

I prefer the newest version, which is v2.71.
Winamp never crashes on me no matter which version. But i only use it for playing, not for broadcasting or streaming anything.

Offtopic, but have you read "A Confederacy of Dunces" by John Kennedy Toole? It's an excellent book.
