I was thinking about reorganising my mp3 collection.
I currently use C:\music\artist - song.mp3

I'm thinking of doing something like:
C:\music\genre\artist\artist - song.mp3

any suggestions?

That would be pointless unless u use albumlist, and also you dont need genre IMHO

My favourite is:

Artist Name/Album Name - Year/Track Number - Track Name.mp3

This is always how it's been for me, and I don't have any complaints: C:/My Documents/music/Artist - Album - Track# - Title

Not all are formatted like that, and I don't know how to find time to rename them all by hand. Guess I could put them through RealJukebox to format all the names, but then Real would probably slap something in there I didn't want...

I'd rather not include the album names, because I usually don't download the entire album. I'd only use it if I use ones I ripped. I'd like to use genre for when I'm DJing. I also download phish shows and find the album ID3 tag to identify the show it's from.

well all my mp3s are named: Artist - Song, simple and easy i use id3 tag for the rest.

Boobless: Please change your sig ASAP. Make the pic smaller, or make a smaller version. We've (unofficially) decided that the maximum filesize for sigs is 15k, and the max. dimensions (I just thought these up) are 50H x 300W. Yours is 80k (whoa!) and it's 90x440. Too big.

OK? :)

Keeping the signature-related stuff here (http://forums.winamp.com/showthread.php?threadid=36945). Thanks boobless. :)

++File Names:
-Artist - Title (Extra Information).mp3
-If there are two artists they will be seperated by a "&."
-The extra information is optional.
-If the file is a remix then "(Remix)" will be the extra information.
Ex: "Boyzone - You Needed Me (Remix).mp3"
-Or you can put the remixer's name followed by "Mix" in the extra information.
Ex: "Creed - With Arms Wide Open (Orchestra Mix).mp3"
-If the file is incomplete, should be directly before the "." and the extension.
++Organization:
-All files are kept in "C:\[Clasified Path]\MP3s."
-All songs that have not been renamed to match the correct format or are currently downloading are in "C:\[Clasified Path]\MP3s\[Classified Path]."
-If the file is not a song, but a sound effect then it will be stored in "C:\[Clasified Path]\MP3s\Sound Effects."

[i]Note: I removed some directory information for security reasons.

I run the music server at work and have found the best method as follows:

Full(or partial) albums:
[ROOT]\music\artist\album\Artist - Album - Track# - Title.mp3

Loose MP3s:
[ROOT]\music\artist\Artist - Title.mp3

I also keep a Misc folder for those that don't and maybe never will have more than one track on the server.

Plus I use ID3 tag for the indexing and searching functions of the server.

I used to not use the Album - Track# part for full albums, but a lot of the stuff is techno, house etc., so it is nice to have them load in org. order to keep the intended flow; so I modifed my method to allow this. seems to work for me. (now if only everybody at work would do that before adding songs to the server)

However, as can be seen above (and eventually below) everyone has their own way of doing things. Ain't life grand! :)

I love connecting to napster and leaving it on all day. In a sense, I run an mp3 hub. I'm constantly downloading and uploading. Anyone else like running so-called 'mp3 servers' or 'hubs' on your personal computers?

I generally use:

(mixing UNIX and Windows notations):
~\Music\mp3\<Artist>\<Album>\<Track#>-<Artist> - <Title>.mp3

or sometimes
~\Music\mp3\<Genre>\<Artist>\<Album>\...

depending on how many mp3's of that artist/genre I have.

For random single mp3's, I put them into the appropriate <Genre> or <Artist> folder, and then name them <Artist> - <Title>.mp3.

I do spend some time downloading from napster but our firewall prevents anyone from downloading from me. I would share if it were possible. As of this morning the music server has 4389 MP3s (roughly 20G) :)

I've recently reorganized my music to:

1. All music files into C:\Music directory as follows

C:\Music\(Artist name)'s (Album title) - for each organized album.
C:\Music\MP3s - for miscellaneous MP3 files.
C:\Music\OGGs - for miscellaneous OGG files.
C:\Music\WMAs - for miscellaneous WMA files.

I don't have, and will not accept, other formats.

C:\Music\Mods - for all module files

Midis are scattered all over tha place, though.

2. All playlists are in the C:\Music directory and are named:

Note: I associate *.m3u playlists with Winamp and *.pls with Sonique, but I usually use *.pls - kinda used to it.

For each album;
(Artist name)'s (Album title).pls or m3u

For misc music files;

MP3s/OGGs/WMAs.pls or m3u

and

Misc.pls or m3u

3. Modules are arranged into two playists because there are mod tracks Winamp can and can't play and there are mod track Sonique can and can't play so in C:\Music:

Mods(Winamp).m3u
and
Mods(Sonique).pls

Surprisingly easy to manage actually!

fish

Extremecriticiser

Sorry, I don't understand you, translate, please.

If you mean you don't what m3u/pls files are: m3u and pls are playlist files, m3u is default of Winamp and pls is default of Sonique. No difference at all, that I can tell.

I have 25 mod files; 19 XMs (Fasttracker II), 3 MODs (Protracker), 2 S3Ms (Screamtracker) and 1 IT (Impulse Tracker).

These are tracker files - MIDIs with 8 bit and 16 bit samples, so they sound a little electronic-esque.

And because Winamp and Sonique uses totally different engines to play modules (while Winamp uses the hybrid Mikamp engine, Sonique uses the MikIT engine).

For example, I can't play rbs_psys.xm on Winamp cos that would sound very strange, but neither can I play mwg_io.xm on Sonique cos that would sound weird too.

Ah, how I long for the Perfect mod decoder - but that will never exist...

Impulse Tracker (the program used to make .IT files) is pretty good at decoding most modules. Perhaps if there were some way to port that engine to a Winamp plugin, we'd be good to go. :)

Ahh... what the hell...

D:\Music\Downloads\Artist - Title for misc downloaded files
D:\Music\Rock\Artist - Title [Album] for ones I've ripped
D:\Music\<genre>\Artist - Title [Album] for other genres that I've ripped. I currently have only Rock.
D:\Music\temp-mp3 is where I put recently ripped songs before I've tagged them. After tagging they get placed in the appropriate folder.
D:\Music\temp-download is where I store recently downloaded files. This is also the folder I share with Nap/Audiogalaxy, along with my Rock folder. Songs get downloaded, decoded, normalized, encoded, and tagged in this directory, then the finished product gets moved to the downloads folder.

D:\My Documents\Music\[Artist Name]\[Album Name]\[Song Name].mp3

I only put the actual track name in the filename, because all the rest of the information is stored in the ID3 tags, which I keep updated on all my files.

I have a folder for Compilations, as well:

D:\My Documents\Music\Compilations\[Album Name]

Oh, and all names surname first, ie:

¤¤¤FOLDERS¤¤¤
Everything goes into C:\[classified]
I'm too lazy to sort them all out. You can if you like though. I would sort by artist.

¤¤¤FILES¤¤¤
Files are named in the following format.
Artist (Song Title).mp3
If there is more than one artist, then I use either:
Artist 1 & Artist 2 (Song Title).mp3
-or-
Artist 1 f. Artist 2 (Song Title).mp3
whichever is appropriate for the song or whatever the other person on Napster used.

Examples:
C:\[classified]\Bush (Warm Machine).mp3
C:\[classified]\Moby f. Gwen Stefani (South Side (radio edit)).mp3
C:\[classified]\Dave Matthews & Tim Reynolds (Crash Into Me)).mp3

[edit]
Forgot to mention why I format this way. It's to match the method of song quoting I use. I picked it up from my days as an AOLamer.

"Quote goes here"
-Artist (Song) [Album]

For example:
"Just because you're paranoid, don't mean they're not after you"
-Nirvana (Territorial Pissings) [Nevermind]

I have nothing but mp3s on my machine.

I organize my music like this.

C\Classified\mp3s\song\artist\album\title

Now with wa3 and the way the media libary works. I will be redoing everything. and extending everything with the id3 tags. I will do it according to the ability of the funtions in wa3 with as much info as I possibly can.

As far as music databases go. I only have 137 mp3s on my personal machine. But am in the process of building a database for a DJ friend that I was once a partner with.
So far we 2200 songs on a 60gig portable h/d hooked up usb to a laptop. When we are done we estimate the database to be about 45 gigs and over 7000 songs. When it's done it will all be mine. Maahhaaaaa.. The whole database is in one folder that is divided by artist/album/songs with over 50 custom playlists.

Yeah.... can't wait till it's done.

I hardly ever use ID3 because if you have to change something in the title, you have to change the filename and the ID3 tag, so if you don't use them all you have to do is update the filename.
This is particularly helpful for the phish shows I download from multiple people.
My format for those is Phish - YYYY-MM-DD (Set No.-Track No.) - Song Name.mp3

This is admittedly a little goofy -

I have about 500 songs (last count was 450 something but that was about a month ago) organized this way:

c:\music\jazz\Artist - Title
c:\music\techno\Artist - Title
for genres that I collect many tracks of

c:\music\music1\Artist - Title
c:\music\music2\Artist - Title - for general stuff

* All of the above directory/folder names have been changed to protect the innocent (and the guilty ;))

All other diferention is done through ID3 tag

After that, I burn specific genres (i.e. jazz, Christmas (I got about 50 Christmas songs - Manheim Steamroller rules :))...but I digress) I burn the genres on to a CDRW - in mp3 so as to fit about 80+ songs - and just leave it in the CDRW drive (kinda like having and extra 650 mb of hard drive space)

But - if you set up playlists based on the CDRW - you have to leave it in! (That's why, for example, my Christmas playlist is the Christmas CDRW - during the holiday season, that's the CD that stays in the drive)

Not the best but I don't feel like going back and rehauling my system! :D

GRooVyGReG
26th February 2001, 17:46
I keep all of my files (about 5000) like this:

mp3s\Album\Artist - Album\Artist - TrNumber - Title.mp3
unless it has different artists, then:
mp3s\Album\Artist - Album\TrNumber - Artist - Title.mp3
then:
mp3s\Singles\genre\Artist - Title.mp3

A great program to help sort all of the filenames and id3 tags is Mp3 Tag Studio:
http://www.magnusbrading.com/mp3ts

Changing File Name Formats and Id3 tags only takes me like 5 mins for all of them now.

DoubleG
27th February 2001, 19:07
DUDE! Anyone following this thread would probably find the above link extremely helpful. Not only does MP3 Tag Studio let you handle MP3 tags en masse (you can edit groups of tags ata a time), it lets you clip the front or back off of an MP3 (To much silence? Hate that extended intro?) It looks sweet :D (although I haven't actually tried it yet) Also: it is sharware but is not crippled in any way and the author even states on the web page if you can't cough up $19, that's fine, you just have to go past the ad banner every time (and on this site, we're used to ad banners...Ooops, sorry that's a different forum ;))

I would urge all of you to leave off the parentheses. If everyone would come up with a standard format, it would make downloading off napster and other services a lot easier. I have a total 17126 mp3's, some duplicates although. All in all I have 68.3 gigs with about 7 gigs free on my external firewire HD. Any of you have any suggestions as to a good program for finding duplicates.
Yeah
The correct way to label should be a simple as possible

(Drive Letter):\mp3\(artist)\(album name)\"SONGS"

(Drive Letter):\mp3 unsorted\"SONGS"

then just a simple
artist-song title should suffice.

I can email you a list of my songs if you want some ideas as far as what to download.
