mp4 was a standard that came about about 3 or 4 years ago now. It used mp3 encoding, but had a player built into the files. This way you could deactivate the player, so a record company would let you download a song, have it play for say 10 days for the first time it was played and then have it not function. Basically, like wma, except the player was built in.

Psytel, or Pystel, I forgot the companies name... but they made an AAC codec and they said it was the same as MP4 so you could encode MP4's, and play them with a Winamp plugin they provided.

Isn't MPEG-4 the DivX codec?

Nope. DivX is based on the video portion of mp4, not it isn't exactly the same. Actually, Microsoft uses mp4 in it's asf streamable format. You'll notice that DivX is WAY better than asf.

Umm. ASF is a file format. "DivX ;-)" isn't anything: it's a pirate/warez collection of:
* hacked Microsoft MPEG4 codec
* hacked Microsoft audio codec
* stolen FhG MP3 codec
and that's it. The new Windows Media Video 7 and Windows Media Video 8 (especially) codecs are both better than the "DivX ;-)" codecs, since the DivX codecs are just older hacked MS codecs anyways.

DIVx is crap anyhow.

This is no where near the oldest thread in the forum. Change the display to view all threads.

Anyway, when encoded properly Divx looks great. You also need good hardware to play it back at a good rate.

It is far superior to asf.

Yes, I've been watching some downloaded Divx movies recently. The graphics card has a tv out and watching it on the tv does look good actually.

Now what has happened to the threads? Looks like loads have been moved. The oldest one was back in March 2000. Now the oldest I can find is this - http://forums.winamp.com/showthread.php?threadid=37415 which is my thread :)

Piesupreme you are correct :), someone has been fiddling with the forums.
