volume and time

first recently i noticed (maybe it just started recently) that if i'm listening to an mp3 or a mod file and i'm in another window then i change over (alt+tab cuz i dont often use the mouse) anywhere in the last 10 seconds of the track the volume drops, not to like 0, but enough to notice
and one i mentioned before that is still a problem is that i have 6 mp3's from a friends band (gasket) and 5 of the 6 (transparent, rhyze, the problem, brainstorm and skd (all downloadable off mp3.com)) it doesnt show a time in the playlist and when played (i use the remaining time setting) it says 1 second, then when it hits zero it starts counting up (kinda like when you start to listen to an mp3 downloading on napster before it's finished), it doesnt particularly bug me cuz i dont normally pay attention to the time, but sometimes it comes in handy

amd k6 450mhz
soundblaster live (i think)
winamp 2.71 with the more recent in_mp3.dll (the one that fixed my crashing problem)
for the volume it's normally at 30% (i have my master volume for the comp high so i keep winamp low)
as for plugins we have
visualization: avs, climax, mr. gooochie!, ledswitcher, and tripex2
dsp: pitchfork, sanders pitch scaler, and pacemaker tempo control
general: windowshade, tray control, and album list 1.35
it uses the waveout plugin
