i hate people who have a fast modem, download a couple thousand songs, and then dont share them with anyone!
and when they do share songs, they make it so you CANT download the songs! what is there fucking problem. napster is used for SHARING music not for downloading from others and then being a greedy little fucker and not letting people download from you!

I've got about 500 mp3's on the hard disk at the moment. I don't share. I did once for a bit. My connection is just too slow.
I can't have people getting my songs, I need all the bandwidth for myself :) Not that I use Napster that much.

I let people share my music, even though I am on a 56k. I am soooo generous, I just have to spread my love....

Since i'm on 56k and i believe in sharing... What I do is see what song they are getting. If its a rare or hard to find recording, i let them have it. If it's something every other person has, i delete them as soon as possible... I think that's fair right?
MamiyaOtaru
16th January 2001, 00:21
sounds fair..
I use the WinMX client, which allows you to set max number of uploads TOTAL, not just per user. That way people have a chance of getting stuff, but not 20 people at once. Prolly still makes people think I'm an asshole tho

im talking about a guy on a T1 who has roughly 1000 songs. he is sharing all of them, just not letting anyone download.

23rd January 2001, 00:52
Yeah sounds smart to share the rare and keep those everyone has. Another thing I love is the mistagging of files. Assholes tag something for what it isn't so you download the wrong song. What else to bitch about Napster? Why not get a program that will limit your bandwidth that Napster eats up? Works for me on my punny 56k.
56k blows...

Do you know why we high-bandwidth folk don't share our music? This is why:
I get on Napster to go download a few songs. I leave for a few minutes, come back, and 8 people are downloading from me, all with 56k modems! This thereby drags my downloads into slow-motion,so everybody had to get their downloads cancelled.
A lesson to you bandwidth-challenged people: Downloading from someone faster than you does not mean you will get it faster, it just slows us down! Your download speed is fixed and it cannot go higher than 53Kbps! Just a little friendly reminder.

When I am at home, and therefore on a modem, it is still faster to DL from Cable/T1 types. Yes, my bandwidth is limited, I know. BUT: If I get from someone else on a modem, it's the same speed as from you, IF no one else is DLing from him, and IF he is getting nothing from someone else at the same time. Using a modem to DL from a cable eats up a fraction of the cable's width, not really slowing him down at all (unless there are loads of people doing it of course) Using a modem to DL from a modem will slow him down significantly and you will also not get it as fast. As stated before, this is why, when I am at school and on a T1, I use a proggy that limits the total number of people DLing from me. -my 3 cents

Ive noticed with big time servers that it takes a lifetime to load r u cable or t1 someone once sucked my 33.6 dry making me lose a download and ive noticed the high bandwith of t1/3 only is one way it can get the songs to at warp speed but to download from it takes all day someone uploaded from my 33.6 in 5 seconds for a 128k approx 4min and it takes (one at a time) sometimes all night for one song. servers are greedy (MP3.com) selling mp3 off individual's cd's. I get sometimes near the end of a song a few hours into it and whopee a transfer error (disconnection/bad bandwidth) or sometimes blips too big for winamp to correct.)

To MamiyaOtaru:
Ah, I see. Actually, I've been thinking about it and this whole download problem is an endless cycle. Cable users flock to download from T3 users and piss them off, 56k users flock to Cable users and piss them off, and maybe 28.8 users flock to 56k and piss them off?. Anyway, here's what I'm trying to say:
1) I understand. I'll be nicer to 56k people on Napster.
2) Will you e-mail me that proggy you have?

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
THATS a definition of MMMEEE!!!
I have 1000+ Mp3s on my computer that are the most rare to find and also the most popular music around but I don't share at all hehehe. I have a 1.5/1.5 DSL which is the speed of a T1 basically but I could care less if people want my music since they have the chance I just post myself as a 14k

Well, that just makes you a selfish piece of shit, doesn't it?
drake
24th January 2001, 02:19
well yes in a way but I do host a radio station with all my music during times when I am off my computer. That isn't selfish. The reason I don't let people download is too many people have 56 k modems or worse and I don't have the freetime for people to download of me taking an hour a song.
MamiyaOtaru
24th January 2001, 05:00
The program I use is WinMX, available for free at WinMX.com it is a Napster client. I believe Audiognome is capable of the same thing. Check it out, the site lists the features, which are pretty kick A.
Oh yeah.. and the other reason for DLing from a cable/T* from your modem, they are full time connections, while other modems are apt to cut out cause someone needs to use the phone.. I know what you mean about attracting slowpokes though
Drake: you don't have the freetime? Whaaa? It's not like you have to sit there and drool, staring at the progress bar while they download :D you could just let it run and do your own thing elsewhere Of course, it's your puter.. you can be selfish if you like :p

I get cable, finally, next week at which time my PC stays on 24/7 with napster open for all to choose. Selfishness and ignorance isn't my style. Most of the music you've aquired has been from 56k, hasn't it? And don't lie, I know better.

bad person username is dlperki (i am also adding drake_2 to my deathlist)
that is just greedy and evil, so evil i cant even think of words to describe you. sure 56k is slow, and they take up our bandwith, but think of them! i mean if they are downloading at .05 k/s then go ahead and disconnect them.
but you have A FUCKING CABLE/T1 etc... YOUR CONNECTED ALL THE TIME! you dont have to get offline to use the phone. and i am sure that they arent taking that much bandwith
"gee this 56k person is making me download at 50k/s instead of 100k/s, im going to disconnect him"
oh big fucking deal, 50k/s is still pretty fast on napster.

24th January 2001, 21:23
No I never aquire from a 56k. I only allow results from Cable or Higher.
Why would someone want music from a 56k or below when they have Cable or Above. That would defeat the purpose of a Cable or DSL if they had to still DL at 3 kbps.

But whenever I am done getting the songs I want, I close everything no matter who is downloading from me.

Why not? With cable or better you could upload from several 56k's at once. Defeat the purpose? Bullshit. You'd be allowed to do several other things while downloading. No hurry here, but I guess some people have no computer of their own so they are limited in time.

25th January 2001, 04:47
Well here was what I was getting at. I could DL of 5 Cables at once each at 10 kbps or I could DL off 5 56k modems at 3 kbps. Which is more appealing? If I can finish DL's quicker from Cables whats the purpose of 56ks? They just take longer to get using them. No matter what number Cables and DSL's or above will always be faster than 56ks except when it you DL so much that it becomes a speed problem for you as in if you were DLing 60 from a Cable or 60 from a 56k it wouldn't matter but I never DL that many at once. Anyone understand what I am getting at?

My dad just uninstalled Napster tonight because he is a crazy man who eats too much peanut butter and it goes straight to his brain. The rrrrrrrrrrr key is jamming again, this was first mentioned in the Winamp 3 post about crackers (but disguised as Winamp 3 thread to trick people into reading it). So I don't have to worry much about people on Napster being an ass anymore.

I have DSL.. my average download speed is 150kps .. pretty fast.. when I download people with a T1/T3 connection it's as if am downloading from a 56k modem because, here's the kicker, they themselves have 50 000 downloads going. I personally let anyone share my music because I think it should be heard.. even people with 56k modems. My download speed is so fast I like to consider myself as invisible. I'm like my own little server. I have several people with 56k modems download stuff from me.. and I don't mind the wait at all.. because when I turn on Napster I'm usually on for a couple of hours anyway. So what's the big deal? Download songs one at a time. Your average speed increases (if it takes you half an hour to download one song but then you download two thinking it will take you an hour, think again. If you download two songs at once it takes 45 minutes for each song to download). Oh well.. just me I guess. I also noticed that most people here listen to punk and whatnot. I listen mostly to stuff like Delerium and Enigma. My faves :O) My napster nick is TechHead9 (of course). See you online :D

If I have Napster running, usually I let anyone download if I am not at my computer.
If they are downloading from a 56k, I let things slide. But sometimes I notice that they want to download something that is going to take 20 minutes, and I want to shut down Napster. In this case, I normally tell them before I disconnect them, and often, give them a link to the song that they can get off of my web server.
When I download, I make a point not to download more than 2 songs from the same user at the same time.
When a person with a fast connection downloads from me, and I am feeling ambitious, I will see if they are sharing, and if I can download from them. If not, I send them a message that they should be sharing and sometimes cancel them. I especially do this if they are downloading more than one track at a time from me. They should share!
What I hate also, is when people lie about their speed hoping that no one will download from them. That is just lame. I usually don't care, but sometimes I am feeling saucy, and cancel them.

Okay I've been waiting for someone to raise this topic for a long time. I have about a 1500 song collection myself. On the rare occasion I use napster I share just the folder with the recent stuff (cuz it takes 100 years to get connected with that much stuff :)) Inevitably, you attract about a dozen little dialupers who all want a song. Thats fine. I get the song I'm looking for and let them finish but hit close so it lets them finish and doesn't let anyone else start. What pisses the hell out of me is the kiddies who send you messages bitching that you only let them get one song and they wanted the whole album. Thats just too bad my friend. I only needed to be on napster for 5 minutes. I dont have time to let you download each song at 25 minutes per song. The moral of the story is, I'll be nice, you be nice, but dont get crazy or I'll cut you off at 95% so you wasted all that time for an incomplete song ;) :p Some people forget that its a "community" :)
btw, s1138, congrats on 666 posts :cool::eek::D

yeah, this thread is very true
earlier today i was thinking about napster, and i reallized: i download tons from ppl, but i'm always cancelling uploads. if everyone thought like i did, no one would be able to get anything and napster would be useless
even before my realization i would just cancel hourlong uploads or ones for my younger bros bad music (my opinion) but now, i jsut leave it, i hope others will do the same thing
how about the ppl who just cancel uploads at 95% for fun?
no explanation, no apology NADA

There's something that really pisses me off about some Napster users, and that's that they somehow feel it's their right to download entire albums for free from other people who've paid for them. I like artist, I buy artist's album, good for me cos I get album, good for artist cos artist gets money. Someone else likes artist, they d/l album, artists gets nothing, I get nothing except annoyance that I had to pay for it and that person doesn't. Personally I think it would be great if it was possible to prevent somebody downloading more than say 3 songs by a particular artist. (Unfortunately that's not possible technically.)
But for people like me who download songs to see if an artist is any good, or to get rare stuff that you can't buy, why should we suffer at the hands of whingers who happen to have a cable or fibre connection, and use that connection to download dozens of mp3s but complain when a 56k user downloads from them? If I download from a cable user, I know they're not going to get disconnected, and I know that if I leave my computer alone it's going to download at 50k+. If I download from a 56k user I have to hope that they don't get cut off from a phone line glitch, and I don't have to worry about my dowload speed decreasing every time they click on a web page link! It makes a hell of a lot of sense to download from somebody faster than you, until you get up to T1 sorts of speeds where you can download almost as fast as you can find songs.
As far as the sharing thing goes... well, I'm fine to share my songs, but only if I'm not using my connection for anything else. I mus quite a bit, and if anybody wanted to download from me then, I'd cut them off. And tell them why, mind you. But the question has never arisen, because for some reason, even though I have no firewall or anything, people can't download songs from me, no matter what I do to Napster or my computer.

Man, i can hear the violins.
If its an artist in the charts, its not like they're going to miss £200 from 100 album sales is it.
If its *not* an artist in the charts, its a new band of a progressvie, non mainstreem thing, they will get some exposure out of it.
Where's the problem?
P.S
In my opinion, you sould only have to pay for production costs for CDs, 12"s and tapes, and copyrights should be a thing of the past.
goblin
28th January 2001, 19:03
Risc_Terilia,
Who, exactly, do you think is going to spend more of their time than your average full-time job takes up, writing and playing that music that you listen to? If the artists and bands don't get paid a penny for their work while you enjoy the music, who do you think is going to make music if it means they have to live with no meny whatsoever?
If an artists's in the charts, they often DO miss that £200, because as you may or may not know artists actually get paid crap considering the price of CDs, most of it goes to their managers and record labels. A few record sales can actually make a difference to charting artists and bands, many famous artists get around or less than the average wage because of the evil iron-bound contracts their label forces them into.
And, speaking from somebody who knows a few, if an artist isn't in the charts (which does NOT mean they're new and progressive), they notice every single record sale. Unsigned bands typically charge £4-5 per album, and they have almost zero production costs, but if you buy their record they will be personally grateful to you for it, since they sell so few.
All you want is to listen to good music and not have to pay a thing, and you don't care who you shit on to do it. People like you make me sick.

Thanks for your constructive 'You make me sick' comment.
Where do non-manufactured bands come from in the first place? They come from amatuer bands. Thats who will provide the music (people like me). I spend quite a lot of my free time making Acid House music, if i make something i like I send it to a lot of my local clubs.
if an artist isn't in the charts (which does NOT mean they're new and progressive), they notice every single record sale.
This is based on a type-0 for which i must appoligise, the 'of' should be an 'or'.
Artist's cut of profits - I took that into account, do the maths:
100 * £12=1200 £200=12.5% of 1200
Say an album sells 1.5 million, 1,500,000*12=18,000,000
12.5% of which is £2,250,000

Hi,
the reason why they are melting our bandwidth is because the *know* we have thet bandwidth. I'm sharing more than 1000 songs with an account at my university. Since I told Napster I'm using just a 56k-Modem, they leave me alone :-)
When downloading, I'm always looking for a fast ping now.

does anyone else hate seeing prank calls, stupid sound clips and other stuff misslabled; "Wierd Al"?
Wierd Al did not write "Sesame Street On Pot", "Yoda Having Sex" or "Pet names for genetalia". He writes songs for a general audience. If you don't know who wrote it, call it "Unknown Artist" or something.

Just because you have the whole album of a certain group on your computer doesn't mean that you won't go and buy it. I have several full albums of different groups, and yet I have those same albums in cd form that I bought. Also, there are just some albums that people like. Why not have them in MP3 form? Most of the time your listening is better because you don't have a cd-rom to slow it down. Just because you have it in MP3 form doen't mean that you aren't going to go and buy the cd. Not everyone has cd burners. Even those people who do don't neccesarily want to burn the songs onto the cds because either A, they don't have the software nessecary, or B. The recorded version of the songs on mp3 are not as good of quality as the songs on the cd.
