I guess you have already heard about soundcards that accelerate MP3. I also have such a card (Turtle Beach Santa Cruz), and under Windows Media Player, acceleration works fine: on P233MMX it's only 2%. And this way visualizations can run faster...
Perhaps in Winamp 3?
