Winamp is possessed?

I'm going to revive this topic -- nobody yet has offerend any advice.

I have Winamp installed on two separate PCs, and I have the same problem with both.

Occasionaly when I *open* a file, Winamp will just open up the EQ window or do some other odd stuff. Here is what I have seen it do to date:

- Move itself
- Open the EQ window
- Push the Gain to +12 and all the EQ's to +12 *VERY ANNOYING*
- Close the playlist
- Open the playlist
- Show the ID3 editor

I have this problem with 2.72 on this machine and 2.666 on the other. What on earth is going on here?

No-one's offered any advice yet because you've not given us enough information.

We need to know the full system specs of both machines (including : CPU + speed, RAM, soundcard, videocard, Windows OS, DirectX version)
Do you have the latest drivers for soundcard & videocard?
Also tell us whether you have installed any 3rd party Winamp plugins
Particularly : General Purpose (are there any gen_*.dll files in your Winamp\Plugins dir)
Have you checked your entire HDD for any viruses.
Do you experience similar problems with other software, or is it Winamp only?

This is all very strange behaviour, and is cetainly not supposed to be happening.

Is this happening only when you double click a Winamp associated filetype in an Explorer window? Is Winamp closed prior to this, or already open?
Does it happen if Winamp is already open & you open a file from the file menu?
What are your default settings? If you just open Winamp, is is set to just display the main window only, or the EQ & Playlist Editor too?

Are these both fresh installs of Winamp, or did you install over an older version?
Are you using any extra skins?
Are both Skins & Plugins dir's configured to the right paths in Prefs?

Have you made sure that the Winamp dir & none of the files within are Read Only?

Have you tried removing winamp.ini (Winamp dir)
Make sure Winamp is closed first. Next time you open it, a new ini file will be created & all the default settings will be restored.

Have you tried uninstalling, then reinstalling?

Answer these questions first & we'll take things from there.

I'm not sure if this could be your problem ... do those things you're talking about happen totally randomly??--

--Anyways, if you're holding down the left mouse button and controlling something on winamp, say, for instance, the volume or an equalizer bar or you're moving the winamp around, and then something becomes the foreground application (i.e. a pop-up or an ALT-tab), then, when you return to winamp, you'll find that the thing that you were controlling before has moved to or towards the current mouse position... hope this was your problem and it is fixed now ... otherwise, sorry, I have no idea what the problem is.

I thought I found a file that this problem was repeatble on. When I opened it the first time, the ID3 editor opened, the next time Winamp suddenly went to double size. I fixed that, and they kept alternating. I opened a different file, let it play for a few seconds, went back to the original file and I'll be damned if Winamp went in to "pause" mode and opened the ID3 tag editor. However, when I shut Winamp down and opened the file -- nothing happened. Alas, the error was random.

All my drivers are up to date. Here are my specs:

500Mhz AMD K6-3 Processor
256 Megs Pc133 Ram
1xHD @ 4.5 Gigs (Winamp installed here)
1xHD @ 29.2 Gigs (Files here)
1xCD @ 4X
1xCD-WR @ 12x4x32
Sound Card 1 -> Sound Blaster PCI512 (I use this one for winamp)
Sound Card 2 -> Echo Layla24 (Don't use this for Winamp)
Video Card: Voodoo3 3000 AGP (This happened on my old crappy PCI card as well)
I use Windows 98 and have DirectX 7.

The problem happens on fresh and old installs of winamp. It happens completely at random. Incidentally, I have only noticed it when using "0" or the open file button in the main window area. *sigh*

What on earth could be making Winamp act so strangely? And has anyone else experience Winamp just opening windows, messing with volume settings, etc at random? I can't imagine that this would be an isolated incident since I found it on 2 computers here and now another one 600 miles away!

You click 'eject' (or press 0), then double-click file icon, right ? You might be accidentially clicking one of parts of Winamp window. See if this still happens when open file dialog isn't above Winamp window while double-clicking.

I'll bet anything that what you said together with what I said are the answers to everything that's been going on with texasdiablo. Hey texas diablo, try just opening winamp, playing a song and that's it, don't touch anything; I bet nothing will happen...:)

Maybe you should just reinstal (or install correct) mouse driver. similar things happened to me. not only in winamp...

This happens on two different computers; I think that their user is to blame. Mouse driver wouldn't cause something like this.
Isn't it possible to configure windoze to open files with single click ? Maybe it is enabled and TD still does double-clicks; in this case second click lands somewhere in Winamp window.
BTW, I've found that WinME does some weird things when there are two or more mice connected ('98 used to work fine).
