Yep.. its not bad. My only complaint is that it doesn't display the top of the winamp.com forums pages correctly.

what do you mean? looks good to me! give me a screener or something, a better description of what you mean perhaps? IE6 does have it's problems, but it has some advantages as well. it is getting better and better :)

Too lazy for a screenshot right now, but the bar that contains Winamp Forums, Mailing List, Promote Winamp, etc. at the top is not filled in red on the forums pages. It's white instead -- kinda weird, because it displays ok on the main page.

Are there any major Improvements, Is it worth the download?

23rd March 2001, 19:51
the thing doesn't remember the toolbar/menu configuration when you open a link in a new window; and if you're using large fonts, some things are screwy looking.
other than that seems ok.

So an Improvement :)
netemeye
23rd March 2001, 20:07
yup :)
actually these extra explorer bars seem like they have potential. it used to be just favorites, history and search. now it can be those plus news, calendar, media, contacts and downloadable custom bars. nothing else major unless you're worried about privacy.

Bleh I find the personal bar useless -- at least you can hide it now, unlike older betas. I also don't like that save/print/whatever bar that shows up when you place your cursor over an image. Websites don't load any faster. It's not much of an improvement in my opinion.
The built in mediaplayer might be ok, if it wasn't so damn small, and if you could put it in a fullscreen mode. Who knows, though.. this may happen by the final version. Anyway, its no less stable than IE 5.5, so I'm not complaining. I just don't see much of an improvement
crazydude, MS probably took it down since everyone was linking to it.. but I've heard it will be officially released tonight.

Microsoft hasn't officially released this preview of IE6 yet. They'll do it really late tonight most likely. They probably just killed the download site since they saw people getting it in advance.. (when will they learn..) Just be patient.
I can't wait to see their new slogan for IE6.. I don't see how they could possibly beat
"Do stuff faster," which is the IE 5.5 slogan :D :p

bonj
24th March 2001, 01:57
No clue.. but MS usually releases stuff *really* late.. Like if they say it will be out sometime on friday, it usually means around 3am on saturday. That's been my experience anyway.
Edit: Yeah, and that's EST.. Meaning they'd just barely make or miss the deadline over in Redmond. But honestly, IE6 is not worth staying up for.

Ew :( If you don't like IE5, you won't like IE6. The main difference is the fairly useless personal bar. You can get your local weather from it and it has a tiny tiny media player that you'll never use :) It can also hold your MSN contact list, and news n stuff, but big deal.. I find it easier and quicker to just have it as a seperate window. It's easier having a homepage customized for your area too.

netscape 4.7 is pretty good but netscape 6 sucks
AmpliDex
24th March 2001, 13:34
I find Netscape 6.01 better than 4.76 because :
Better CSS Support
Custom installation
Personal Security Manager
Faster
Manage multiple accounts under one user name
Better Composer layout
Includes Sidebar
Includes Themes
However, Netscape 4.76 is better than 6.01 because :
Not all web sites can support Netscape 6.01, but 4.76 can
Overall, I prefer 6.01!

IE5.5 and up do load websites much faster than Netscape6, although NS6 isn't a bad program if you're running on a 700mhz or so processor with at least 128 megs of RAM on Win9x (its still slow on Win2k). Even then, IE55 still displays websites much quicker and consumes much fewer resources. I'll probably wait and see how Mozilla 1.0 turns out, but I doubt it'll end up beating the speed of IE55, though ya never know :)
Evidence that Netscape isn't stable enough or fast enough or overall just not good enough for wide use yet, is that their parent company, who paid millions to aquire them, still packs Internet Explorer with their software, and you have to be on their beta team in order to try out Netscape/AOL integration. Anyway, Netscape6 does have potential if Mozilla is sped up a lot. These "which blah is better" debates are always so pointless -- it's all up to personal preference. Please refer to some old Sonique flaming threads on the Winamp forum or vice versa to find out where this is going :)

THANK YOU! This is why I've been staying out of this conversation. Personally I don't like NS6, but Mozilla is good, and K-meleon is GREAT. I still use IE though, simply because I'm used to it and it doesn't give me any shit.

try redownloading the zip file the first time i downloaded it it said file missing then I redownloaded the zip and it worked
bonj
25th March 2001, 03:21
Oh well thats not the error I got. Anyway, the entire IE6 is around 70 megabytes. Those zip files are from somebody who was able to download IE6 before Microsoft pulled it. Active setup only downloads updated files that you do not have to save time -- apparently you need an updated file that that person did not, so you'll probably just have to wait for the official release. I'd post my IE6 setup folder, but it was only 6 megs, so I doubt it'd help. Besides that, I'm too lazy :D Just be patient if that installer doesn't work, or if you *really* want to, download one of the foreign language versions.

being a faithful IE user, I find that IE loads things much faster than NN. I have yet to be able to download Netscape 6.x, because the last few times I've tried, the servers werent up, which allowed me to laugh mercilously at Netscape, yet again.
Netscape loads pages slower, IMHO, and has limited support for the new awesome gizmos IE5.5 supports (scrollbar coloring, image transparancies, and of course, CSS.)
I wont download the new version of IE until it becomes un-beta, since 5kbs a second times 70 megs = sometime next week.
and i dont think i want to put my trusty modem thru that, another 5 times.
oh well. just my opinion.

9.90 is what I downloaded. Of course that download will be even smaller when the full version is out, because I won't be downloading outlook express. I have no use for anything related to IE except the browser.
BTW, is there any way to get rid of Outlook Express completely from Win2k?

For all you Windows 98 / Me users, it's 10.2 MB for typical installation (if you ran typical install for IE 5.5 SP1) as I checked! It failed to download the last two days, but I know the typical is 10.2 MB for Windows 98/Me. Hopefully, I'll be able to get it tomorrow (0nly 40 minutes of downloading) to see if it's better or worse than IE 5 & 5.5. If it causes potential damage to my PC, then I'll re-download IE 4.01 SP2, un-install IE 6 BETA, and install IE 4.01 SP2. On many PC's, I found IE 4 better than IE5, and in some cases, better than Netscape 4.x (but NOT 6). :D

I took a wager that MS would get their act together, and thank god, I'm right. I took the time to d/l IE 6 tonight, and they finally fixed the huge whopping error that kept me from using IE for the past 6 months. IE would just stop connection requests/recieves every 3 minutes or so, than start up again.
Thank god, the trouble is gone. But I may stick to Opera just yet:
Transmission requests are still a little slow on the get go. It does nothing for about 1.5 seconds (but the progress bar still moves forward), then it starts up.
There seem to be some rendering problems. Maybe they switched html rendering engines or something, but now it acts more like Netscape. The page loads, then it shows. Even progressive scan jpegs have trouble showing up until the whole page has loaded. After that, html translation is just unforgiveable. It reads the content, then places each part one by one! At least on Opera and older IE's, images, than tables and frames get read first. Now, it'll put in text, than format width, put in images... all in all, it takes too long to compose the page.
Still no MDI
Still no transfer rate indicator
On the plus side...
The personal tab is kinky. I don't know how often I'd use it, but it's nice too have.
Aside from rendering problems, it seems faster. First time I started it up, even typing text in the addy bar took ages, but that problem cleared up in a jiffy. Now, I'd rate IE only slightly below Opera speedwise, and several steps above Netscape.
Support for most pages- I missed this in Opera (like my got malk page's navbar doesn't work with Opera). Even though Opera is fully standards compliant, it doesn't recognize a fair amount of IE specific tags. but, the advantage is if I use Opera to test for dev'ing, I'm sure my entire audience will see it exactly like I intended it. But, I still am happy to get back IE tag viewing.
All in all, I'll stick with Opera for speed dependant, multi-tasking things like researching, but I may start to use IE for day to day things. Just being able to see every page in it's full glory brings IE closer to Opera in quality. For day to day use, the speed is forgiveable. But, when I just need to retrieve info quickly, I may just use Lynx.
the end result: IE 6 turned me back. I no longer hate IE with a vengeance; rather, it'll be up there in the list of apps I use daily.

28th March 2001, 08:24
Forgot to mention two things:
1) It looks alot cleaner than older versions. I guess it's got that Win2k look to it.
2) Even cached pages have minor problems rendering. But, for some reason, these rendering problems are sporadic. I'm noticing that sometimes it works like a charm (aside for not actually showing up as it loads). The whole thing just kinda whooshes down, and reveals itself.

When I tried to install IE 6 BETA on my P3 @ 500 MHz with 192 MB PC133 SDRAM, 6.4 GB HD, Intel 8 MB AGP, 56K, running on the Windows Me Operating System, here's what I got to tell you:
When the installation reached 66%, the computer stalled.
When I restarted my PC, Windows wouldn't even started!
The reason : IE6 F*ed up the file system!
Even when I re-installed Windows 98 SE, I still couldn't access anything on my PC <SCREW THOSE MICROSOFT IDIOTS!>! Windows wouldn't detect my video card, my sound card, nor my modem!
So if I were you, stick with Netscape 6.01 and don't think about getting IE 6, even in its final release (when it comes, of course), unless you're going to upgrade your Windows to XP!

Hello, people!
Sarcasm indeed! I think the reason why Netscape crashes on some of your PC's is that Netscape has a "Microsoft Lover Detection Program" :D LOL!!LOL!! Actually, I don't know at all why it would crash on your PC!
Speaking about the crashes, I just got my computer fixed up from that deadly IE 6 BETA breakdown! I even find that it's more stable now, even IE 5.5! Well, Netscape Communicator 4.04 still beats IE 5.5 in speed, but not much! Well, at least IE 5.5 didn't crash on me since my PC was fixed! I did have Netscape 6 & Communicator 4.76 before IE 6 f*ed up my PC, but the 4.04 that came with WordPerfect Suite 8 still runs fine! Right now, I'm just re-downloading Communicator 4.77 and Netscape 6.01, so I'll have quite a few Internet Programs out of the way!
"Communicator 4.77? Never heard of it!" That's what you might say, but there is! If you still want Netscape, but don't want to get 6.01 just yet, you can get it at :
http://home.netscape.com/computing/download/index.html
Maybe it's that when you re-install Windows for the 2nd time, it turns to be more stable when installed the first time! Maybe so, but I'm not going to risk downloading IE 6 again until the final comes this fall!
