You might wonder why I'm posting this here, but I've just overcome a scary, mysterious Win98SE hanging problem and it filled me with joy. Who better to share the joy with than you folks?! :D

So, here goes... *ahem*

If your broadband ISP uses PPPoE for ADSL connection, you'd sooner or later get friggin' mad with the ISP's custom dial-up app and turn to a free PPPoE dialer called RASPPPoE (http://user.cs.tu-berlin.de/~normanb/). But if you are using Win98SE, once RASPPPoE is installed, things in your PC start to hang arbitrarily. At a random point in time, all network apps will suddenly get no connection, the DOS prompt won't open, the Recycle Bin refuses to empty its trash, shutdown doesn't work, hell breaks loose. You'd think you've entered the Twilight Zone.

It turns out the NDIS driver in Win98SE is faulty, and may sometimes enter a race condition that monopolizes all network-related resource. To solve this problem you must install a Microsoft patch (http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q243/1/99.ASP).

That's all. Off to sleep.
