A country with no national health care for everyone is no country to be.

also i heard an american gun activist say "it would be dangerous to ban guns in America" i mean where else would you get such a big idiot?

I think that since guns are so common in America you really can't have them banned. Because once guns are illegal, only criminals will own them.

remember what happened in the US (back around 1915... I don't know the exact date) when they made alcohol illegal? The business boomed like never before: since it was illegal they sold it for a lot more, and people were willing to pay more to get it. The same things would probably happen with guns, if they were illegalized.

less people without health care would get shoot though. if you took every gun away from every american (forces excepted), no one could get shot, right? not likley coz most people will revolt and spew some drivel on the constitution. Because prices of illegal guns will go up on the black market is no excuse for banning them and saving lives

Here's a little known fact:
:)In 1996, a new commander was transferred to the space station on the moon. This had been there for about 5 to 10 years before his arrival.
:(In 1999, this commander was discussing ways to manage the growing amounts of nuclear waste, piled up on the dark side of the moon.
:mad:On September 13 1999, a Greenpeace (or similar, I can't remember) activist decided to blow up all this nuclear waste!
This resulted in the moon being blown out of its orbit around the Earth, and the start of that great achievement of corny UK sci-fi: Space1999!

(Did I mention that it was the seventies, and everyone was really optomistic about the space program following Buzz Aldren and Niel Armstrong (confirm spelling) walking on the moon!)

What does this have to do with anything?
NASA are going to try to move the Earth?
What's going to stop them from moving it too far?

Space 1999 for real or what, people!

And1K
Yes, I'm paranoid!

All that information came from one episode.
The 13 september 1999 bit comes from the opening credits, where it shows a lot of very cheap-looking explosions, then the moon going off in its own direction.

The blowing up nuclear waste bit comes from this episode where someone says "We blew it up to leave Earth, let's blow it up again to achieve orbit around this other planet."

(OK: I lied - it's 2 episodes)

In the other episode, the commander (If I think hard enough, I can probably remember his name, but I know he was blayed by Martin Landau) was remembering his first trip in an Eagle(!) after his arrival in 1996. On this mission, he encountered a flying scrapyard full of delict spaceships, all sort of joined together by this creature that, acting in perfectly understandable self-defence, tried to kill him, then added his eagle to the scrapyard. I think that it was located out past Pluto or something, and he was checking what exactly it was, 'cos it registered as a planet, even though there was no planet there!

In season 3, the crew of Moon Station Alpha (which is, btw, kept free of all viruses, bacteria and funghi for whatever reason, by whatever process  ) (correct me if I'm wrong!) met this massive floating scrapyard, including the original Eagle. Everyone's like "Wow, that ship looks exactly like oneof our Eagles" Then the commander remembers all this stuff. He looks around for Earth, finds it not there, decides that the scrapyard has moved, and promptly tries to get himself killed again retrieving this Eagle (or something... who cares?)

AARGH Space 1999 Flashbacks!

There was this one cool episode where they knew somehow (could have been Meja (or Maya, or Maiya) who told them) that there were robots living on that planet, as well as humans (there were either evil aliens who tried to kill humans, or humans, never strange looking, yet very friendly aliens) Basically, they take an Eagle down to investigate, and run into all these figures wearing robes and white procelain face masks. These are obviously robots. They also meet some perfect looking humans. It turns out that the only reason that the robots haven't completely wiped out the humans is that they can't because they learn by example, and they haven't been taught violence yet (they don't have TV!) so these humans keep their faces covered over. These robots decide to make Landau show them violence, and take the Doctor, who they think that he fancies, and one of the robots tries to get off with her.
"We designed computers to help us design robots. The robots built better computers, which designed better robots, and so on."

Then there was this episode when they met someone with such advanced technology as a transporter beam (you step under this green light, and you're instantly beamed to the ship.) I think that that particular baddie was the Borg, trying to assimilate them!
That was the one where they picked up Meja, who is an Animorph. i.e. she can change into any animal that she chooses. (I think.) She also had facial markings like some big cat.

Then there was this other episode where they ran into another shuttle, (a Sparrow, a Starling, or a Sparrowhawk) containing a robot called Brian (you know, Brain, Brian) intent on destroying all humans
(2001: a Space Oddessy rip, anyone?)

I lied. I'm very sad.

You know the worst thing?
I haven't seen the show in about 5 years. Probably more.
I can even remember the theme tune!

by hurtling comets at earth do they mean HIT earth, or close passes
b/c close passes by comets will do jackshit to change the orbit (remember haley's comet)
and hitting earth would kind of kill lots of people

and i think i saw a grand total of HALF a space1999 episode in my entire life

i think the key section is "...Any alien astronomers observing our solar system would know that something odd had occurred, and would realise an intelligent lifeform was responsible.."

since when is risking all of humanity for the sake of preserving the US ecoconmy so it can continue to make lots of $ and pollute the world, something that would be done my any intelligent lifeform

Actually, (this is according to a study performed a couple of years ago based on police reports across the United States) here in the United States, people are more likely to get shot or shot at in a state that makes it illegal for common citizens to carry guns than in a state that allows common citizens to carry guns.

Given that fact, the gun activist is starting to seem pretty smart to me.

National Healthcare ... oh what like in the Netherlands where the situation has degenerated so much that the government now pays for your "medical" Pot? Good lord, I think we are very happy with the capitalist health care system, thank you.

Wildrose-Wally

National Healthcare in Canada is becoming a reason for social engineering.

For example: A smoker is now likely to be told to but out, because he will be putting an unfair burden on the healthcare system. Yet you are not allowed to buy insurance so you can pay for your own healthcare needs. :(

Natonalized health care... Can't be good in the end. I realize that many promises are made by thouse who eather belive in it or would like to use it as a method to get more power. (Yes, there are people who like to tell others what to do, if you think about it you probably know one or two)
Let's look at the industries that provide the best bang for the buck. It would be the ones easiest to fire. Think about it. You order out for pizza, it comes under cooked, burnt, whatever. Even if you are not mad enough to ask for your money back, are you going to call them again? At the other end of the spectrum, look at the ones you can't fire. They are not as quick to change ways that are a problem. Our cable company in town used to be real bad untill the cute little sattilite dishes hit the market. They changed their tune after they lost 1/2 of their customers.
I relize that when in an accedent you will probably go to the closest hospital. I would if I am bleading by the bucket. But what about the things you got time to shop around? The local hospitals around here are real competitive with things like births. The price can run from just over $1200 to much higer if there are complications. (I had one daugher run about $45,000)
Currently, if you are running one of these hospitals, you have a real insentive to keep the quality up. Take away compition and you take away the insentive.

That is what I think. Your turn.

i think i'll just rehash the old argument for healthcare: the poor. how fair is it that some people can't afford proper medical care?
when i was younger i was in and out of hospitals a LOT, if it hadn't been for healthcare they wouldn't have been able to afford both treatment and other stuff, my parents would have had a choice: pay for my treatments, or pay for food and shelter for my family. Thankfully they didn't have to make taht choice

or maybe i'm jsut biased

Nebraska

Yes, I agree it is not cheap for some things. That is why you carry insurance. Of course that is not cheap eather. Last time I checked there are verias forms of "insurance" offered by the welfare industry here in the states. So it is not like medical care in not avalible. If anything neads fixed it is the insurance industry. After all if your car is recked and someone fixes it beter then new, but the insurance company will not pay. Is it the mecanic's falt?
One thing I have found though that makes a differnece in the cost is the Liability. I mean we have doctors that figure out what is wrong with you and then do 2 more tests just to cover his rear if he ever gets sued. So maybey that is where we shuld actualy start is find a way to limit all the suing. I don't mean ligitamate sutes, but when you are going for over $1,000,000 just for pain and suffering, with expenses on top of that over trivial things. Do you think that is part of the probem on the cost side as well?

That is what I think.. Your turn...

Yes the basic concept of a National Heath service sounds good but when put into practice it alwase has big problems take the UK sistem did you know we are now shiping patients abroad to have hip operations!! one of the most simplistic operations is done abroad the NHS is usles even now with Labour in it's underfunded outdated and pathetic.

PS it's all THACHERS fault, Mrs "greed is good"
