Playlist/Read titles on load problem

If Winamp is set to "Read titles on load" under Options I cannot create or load a playlist that recurses through all the sub-dirs (Root\Allmp3\mp3\%artist%\%album%\*, etc)across a LAN. Winamp 2.76 starts loading then just pops off the screen and taskman without a peep. I have tried creating new playlists AND old ones that hadn't yet been saved with all the track info as well as re-installing Winamp, only have 2 Vis plugins(Milkdrop, Geiss) nothing else. The machine is a Win2kSrv-SP2/Athlon-750/576RAM/Abit KA7-100/SB-Live 5.1/DX8.It is accessing a dual boot machine using the same exact dir under either Win98se or Win2kProSP2. It worked fine loading locally with a virgin install on the WinPro machine, but completely locked up in W98.
Anything I can try?

is it possible that you have security permissions set in win2k so the win98 system can't read the files? i know it's a long shot, but it's the only thing i can think of at the moment.
