I'm slightly confused... hopefully somebody will
have travelled this path before:

I'm trying to do on-the-fly encoding/streaming
of the line-input of the soundcard, not
pre-recorded MP3's. Pre-recorded MP3 broadcasting
seems to be the standard modus operandi of
SHOUTcasters.. so I have had very little luck
finding applicable documentation for what I'm
trying to do.

The root of my confusion stems from the existence of
the nullsoft line recording plug-in... is this
plug-in needed? It seems that the "advanced"
mode of the shoutcast source DSP plug-in handles
broadcasting of line-input itself. So that's all
well and good, except that every time I start to
broadcast, winamp crashes after a seemingly variable
amout of time. (winamp, not the server)

damnit.

so anyway, any help is appreciated.

do u have 2 soundcards in ure pc by accident?
i have had the same problem with 2 soundcards fixed it by moving 1 of them. but i do have another problem, i also wanna use my master soundcard's line in to stream but haven't found the right plugin yet.
btw now im using VTT (virtual turntables) and an external mixing panel and will try to stream with that.
any help is appreciated

Ok, you should already have the Nullsoft CD\Linein plugin (in_CDDA.dll). If not, get the full version of Winamp. Also, try getting another version of Winamp. Yours might have a glitch (what version do you have?). But if you want to use line in WITHOUT the dsp shoutcast plug-in doing it, hit ctrl+l and try linerec:// . That will open your line-in port. Winamp already has support for line in recording.
