Dunno if this helps at all with the ongoing nvidia hardware blit soapopera, but at 16 bit colordepth the interleaving and horizontal offset of desktop mode with hardware blits enabled disappears. Granted, the colors get even more screwed up, but it might give a starting point if you haven't noticed this yet.
