ive had enough of those surrounding threads about skin creation!!!

lets make it all in one place (thread) so people will come
and learn or write how to make a skin:

1.) from scratch (for those who know XML and stuff)
or
2.) from default player (easier, less coding)

who's with me?

There are sites that discuss of skin creations (xml/maki/etc.) and none gives you complete information. Perhaps francis' guide will get more mature with time, but since winamp3 isn't a final product I highly doubt that you can gather everything in a single thread like that.

So many things... my advice: look at the skins available. If you know HTML, XML isn't very hard to learn. For the script part, I found that Stephen's scripting specs to be quite helpful. But again, the skins are your best teachers.

thx for the advice.....

but i tried some skins already!
kinwashi's probe, lounge, simple skin, even uncompleted ones.
but still nothing! i guess all skinners use photoshop6 and psp7or8
though im "stuck" with photoshop 5 (money limit). so the whole
transparency thing isn't working for me well.
in my other thread here.... im still stuck with the background!
i need to make the white space as null (transparent).
sobellzard gave me an answer that works with photoshop6 u see.
and my other problem is: i dont know xml! i looked in stickies
and some other sites, its like chinese to me!
if theres someone using photoshop5..... contact me here.

Export Transparent Image Assistant

Photoshop 5.x includes an Export Transparent Image Assistant to help you create transparency in images for use in page layout applications and on the Web. To access the Assistant, choose Help > Export Transparent Image and then follow the instructions.

When using the Assistant to create transparency in black-and-white images, transparency is still determined by whether an application interprets white pixels as transparent. The Assistant will prompt you to save images intended for print as EPS files, although you can choose TIFF from the Save As pop-up menu in the Save As dialog box. The Assistant will prompt you to save images intended for online use as GIF or PNG files.

From http://www.adobe.com/support/techdocs/342e.htm

This is the method I use, even in 6. It works quite nicely for me, and until I have a problem I can't solve using it I see no reason to not use it. Good luck

The computer I use Photoshop on is incapcitated right now (he had a rough night), or I'd post screenshots.

Basically, Open the assistant, tell it you want to save for online, then choose png. It will ask if your image is on a transparent background or if you have something selected. I turn off all the layers except the image to be saved, and select "On a transparent background", which is probably what you want, seeing your screen captures in the other thread. I might have the order of the assistants screens wrong, but play around with it and see what you get. That's what I did, and I feel comfortable with it now.

Thanks for the praise, but I'm no super duper skinner. I haven't been working on my skin at all. But real life has been good, so I'm not sweating it, before WA3 is finalized I know I'll get the chance to get back to work. Pretty much all the other regular skiners in here I'd say are better than me. But I hang out and learn and help with what I can :).

Plus I have less than zero percent artistic talent ;). So just coming up with idea's and making them look clean can be tough.

Anyway, how's your skin coming? Any screenshots?
