ok.. i hit a little problem.. apart from on here, i have nowere to post my Script Tool... geocities wont allow .zip anymore and angelfire wont allow off site linking... btw.. i put it in the NSIS installer now with the 2 ocx files that are needed so its around 250kb...

i can do:

1. not use the installer and put it on here on its own
2. find a new server to put it on with installer

so could anyone give me any ideas were i can get FREE webspace that allows offsite linking so i can post it there or dose everyone think its better just to keep posting here

NuttySchmo

You can use Angelfire... just make an HTML file that links to your program...

<html><body><a href="winamp 3.0 xml script tool.zip">Download</a></body></html>

Easy, huh?

dex, if you want, I can put it on my server in the morning and set you up with an ftp login so you can update it yourself afterwards. I'm not using my server for anything but a few other files I like to have handy to download, so it shouldn't be a problem. It it gets overly popular, we'll figure something else out.
Interested?

If it's under 5mb you can send it to gonzotek@yahoo.com. Otherwise you can let me know what messenger you prefer and I'll meet you online and we'll do a direct transfer that way. Do you have or want a page explaining it? Like AmpTicker (my {first} prog). I'll do a write up if you want, or you can just link to it and not have any webpage, or whatever.

Reread your earlier message (concerning size), just send it to gonzotek@yahoo.com

I noticed one of the bugs you list on the webpage is:

The only thing that i cant get working so-far is the save command (it all saves as 1 line with little black things in it)
Apart from that it does work and it can help those long hours of scripting (that no-one realy likes.... and if they tell you they like it they are lying).........

In case you weren't aware... there are actually many different kinds of line feeds. Some of them Windows doesn't like... and so you see the black box in Notepad...

There is:

\n Newline
\r Carriage Return
\f Form feed

Your probably using \r when you should be using \n (generally considered safer).

Hope that helps

OK... This is in VB.. Try the Chr() function with the correct ASCII character code

\n New Line Chr(10)
\r Carriage Return Chr(13)
\f Form Feed Chr(12)

I guess try experimenting with these different ones...

Hope that helps more.

Looking good.

Suggestions: Feel free to knock these off in whatever order you feel like, or not at all.

1. Command Keys like Ctrl-N for a new document
2. User-Defined Macro's (so users can add their own snippits of text like everything on your add menu).
3. Syntax Hilighting - different parts of the xml are colored differently. Makes scanning for a particular value easier. Not everyone likes it, so this should be easy to turn on and off.
4. Links to WA3 reference - Maybe link to some off the online tutorials, or get permission to convert them into an off-line format. I'm willing to help here and gather the good docs if you'd like.
5. Make the program window resizable. At 1024X768, I could have it a little bigger, and 640X480 users might want to make it smaller.
6. Under "File", it's spelled "Finish", not "Finnish"
7. When I went to add text elements to the skin, the default info in it went like this:

<font id="arialfont" file="arial.ttf"/>
<text
id="timer"
display="time"
x="110" y="100"
w="80" h="50"
font="Blackletter686 BT" fontsize="50" align="center"
color="0,0,0"
timecolonwidth="7"
/>
<text
id="songticker" ticker="1"
display="songname" default="Offspring AMP for Winamp 3.0"
x="105" y="50"
w="90" h="16"
font="Blackletter686 BT" fontsize="10" align="center"
color="0,0,0"
/>
The default font(the one your program uses by default) should more generic than "Blackletter 686 BT", and agree with the "font id" assignment.

Good job so far, but there is plenty of room for improvement. Which is a good thing...sometimes you can code yourself right into a corner.

Bizzeh
11th November 2001, 15:13
ok i done some of that, and have not got the first idea of how to do some of the other stuff, but....

<font id="arialfont" file="arial.ttf"/>
<text
id="timer"
display="time"
x="110" y="100"
w="80" h="50"
font="Blackletter686 BT" fontsize="50" align="center"
color="0,0,0"
timecolonwidth="7"
/>
<text
id="songticker" ticker="1"
display="songname" default="Offspring AMP for Winamp 3.0"
x="105" y="50"
w="90" h="16"
font="Blackletter686 BT" fontsize="10" align="center"
color="0,0,0"
/>

this is now

<font id="arialfont" file="arial.ttf"/>
<text
id="timer"
display="time"
x="110" y="100"
w="80" h="50"
font="Arial" fontsize="50" align="center"
color="0,0,0"
timecolonwidth="7"
/>
<text
id="songticker" ticker="1"
display="songname" default="I Want To Make Love To Winamp 3.0"
x="105" y="50"
w="90" h="16"
font="Arial" fontsize="10" align="center"
color="0,0,0"
/>

thanks for your sugestions... all i can say is "Ill try"

I created a NSIS installer and a mirror (http://members.home.com/cassidyn/xmltool/w3xmltoolinstall.exe) for you. The installer installs to C:\program files\Winamp 3.0 XML Tool, by default. You can find the script that I used to create it inside the program directory as well.

Oh, and small error in your docs, it's

Prev Button = F2
Play Button = F3
Pause Button = F4
Stop Button = F5
Next Button = F6
Eject Button = F7
not
Prev Button = F2
Play Button = F3
Pause Button = F3
Stop Button = F4
Next Button = F5
Eject Button = F6

I fixed that in the readme in the installer version.

you have to install the .ocx files to the windows/system folder in YOUR profile.

e.g

c:\documents and settings\(your profile name)\windows\system

then it'll work

no you dont need to install VB6

you can have the OCX files in 1 of 2 places...

2. The same forder as where you put the program

i dont mean to try and make you look stupid or anythin but... did you unzip the program that i posted

29th November 2001, 04:42
You need to make your installer and program get correct paths. I don't use WinRAR but I know it has an option to install in the <WINDIR>\<PROGRAMS> directories. I am only saying this because My OS is not installed on my C: partition, it's on E:. Also, in the program itself when you try to run winamp3 from it, it thinks it is in C:\Program Files\Winamp3. So maybe an option to specify where exactly the winamp3.exe is actually located. I am not knocking your program, I happen to love it and use it alot, but those were just some annoyances. Thanks for your time...

theres a few more fixes aswell

very nice job, i don't fully understand xml yet, but it looks like everything is there! one suggestion, make the window resizeable

Bizzeh
1st December 2001, 14:20
thanks the the info...:D

resize is one of the things im working on at the moment...

at the min this program is designed to work in 800*600*32, if i cant get a resize thing set up, ill just make 2 "Special Version's" of the tool when i make my normal one (special will = 640*480*32 and 1024*768*32...)... but hopefuly i will be able to set up a resize function... only time will tell

btw... if i get more than 5 individual requests for a 640*480 or a 1024*768 version, i will make the version asked for... so if u run at *480 or at 1024*768 and u want a better sized version for yourself start posting and asking

Version 1.78

please dl and try out

gekko
1st December 2001, 15:26
This is kind of a stupid request, but when you release a new version, could you take away the tabstops so that when you push tab in the window it inserts a tab into the edit box? That would be a little helpful. You know your xml tool kick's ass... I've been looking for something like this, it'll really kikass in later versions

what would really be awesome (and i realize that this is kind of dreaming right now) is if you could see a preview of your skin given the values for positions in the button elements, because it's hard to pinpoint the exact location given a .png file that has translucency. Previews of where everything will be placed would make things a lot easier because you wouldn't have to run winamp to make sure that the positions were correct....

Yea... it's kind of dreamy, but maybe one day....

yay after my fresh install of xp i had to go through all the files to find the ocx files. (view attatch)
how about include these files in the setup?

suggestion: i know its probly a big ask but ad a "sliding drawer" thing where it asks for the co-ordinates and includes the script to make a sliding draw.

Bizzeh
3rd December 2001, 17:09
if you have the ocx files in the windows/system directory... then you dont have to put them in to the same folder as the program...

and u right... that is a big ask...
1. i already in progress of adding in somthing to enter co-ordinates
2. dunno about the scripts yet:( i dont quite know how they work:confused:

Just incase anyone wanted to know... i had my 10 week test in computing in collage last week... this program got me an A*:cool: :D :cool:

who wants me to ad input boxes in to the program... so that when you click on a componant.. it gives you a box for you to enter x, y, h and w...

do you want that or do you want me to just leave it, and let you enter co-ords yourself

Bizzeh
3rd December 2001, 23:17

Do any of you use AnyEdit ? available at www.anyedit.org you can add syntax files and wizards of your own to this editor., it does syntax highlighting and other stuff., it would be nice if someone made syntax files, cliptext [wizard files] and autocompletion files [intellisense like popup !]

i have a suggestion, well yeah abou the porggy.

why dosen't the scroll bar scroll down automatically when the code gets larger than the page size if you know what i mean, this annoys me, cause lets say edit some stuff at the bottom, then i press another button to write the XML, and the scroll bar scrolls up automatically.

rather than that i love the program, it is really nice.

thanx

hey, i'm a vb coder and i know your problem. by the sounds of it you are using a rich text box and when you are saving the file use this:

RichTextBox1.SaveFile Filename, 1

this will save the files as plain text. for the linefeed use vbcrlf. this should fix your problems. laterz

Dave

16th December 2001, 05:08
use this code to fix the scrolling problem with the previous post:

RichTextBox1.SelStart = Len(RichTextBox1.Text)

place this code after the line of code where is places the text in the text box. replace the RichTextBox1 with your object name.
if you want to contact me DexterHolland email me at reets@trol.cc
i can help you out with the programming, i am very good at programming in vb and would love to help in any way

Try 400Mhz, The pentium 4 has a FSB of 800Mhz that is what you are thinking of. Cant wait till they get the system ddr memy up to the speed of the gfx card memy (550mhz I think is whats in the geforce 3).

As for your scripting program, instead of makin everyone download the needed .dll's, write a NSIS installer (make sure you set overwrite to no on the system files though, dont want to be replacin newer files with older ones.). NSIS is really easy to use once you spend a little while playing around with it.. Nullsoft is god!

:winamp: :winamp: :winamp: :winamp:

Gonzotek
16th December 2001, 19:12
Yeah, use NSIS! You don't even have to write the scripts by hand anymore. There are a couple of nice "front-ends" to it. You've got your choice of wizard based, editor based, or a combination of the two. Look in the NSIS forum for "NSIS Workbench" and "Slate Blue". Both are only semi finished, but are far enough along to be useful. Besides the NSIS forum are like our cousin's ;) and we should support software from them ;)

1. i have no idea how to put .png in to vb or i would do...
2. the co-ords i can do, its just it would take me longer and the .exe size would be quite larger
3. i have no idea how to use :winamp:NSIS:winamp:
4. what .dll's do people need to download

cybaix
16th December 2001, 19:47
Answer to 3:
Then its a good time to learn, if you can program in vb you can write a nsis script (or just go use one of the wizards). A good place to start is using the script genorator on the NSIS site, then check out the documentation to see ways to customize your installer.

Answer to 4:
heh heh you must be new to vb eh? Whatever dll's you have selected in the component manager (see insert a) for your project, and the standerd vb runtimes.

does anyone know how to put animated .gif files in to vb without me losing the animation and it just being 1 frame pic... btw i need to do it by code... if i have to use a .ocx file i dont want to bother because its not worth it... thanks

cybaix
16th December 2001, 20:08
hmm, well your best bet might may be just break the anamation down to frames and reanimate it in the code that way. I'm not really aware of anyway to import a entire gif anamation and keep it playing.

You could try converting the gif into an avi and have the avi displayed.... (Microsoft uses this for all the file transfer, magnifing glass, file search animations)

There are a lot of tutorials started. Check the stickies. The problem is that because Winamp3 isn't finsished (and methods could still change) it's hard to write a tutorial that will still be relevent with each subsequent release. I'd just hang out here, download all the skins and scripts I could, and study them. That's what all the rest of us scripters/skinners do.

They tutorials will come a'plenty when Winamp3 leaves beta....believe me ;)
