Things feel a little 'hot' in here (the forums) at the moment so here is a nice snowy scene I rendered to cool it down...
1280 x 960 snowy scene (http://www.pabuk.com/cgi-bin/forums/ikonboard.cgi?act=Attach;ID=3;f=6;t=28;p=233)

What's terragen? Is it one of those fractal landscape drawing programs?
The pic looks good :) but you could do with moving the mountain out of dead centre, maybe crop a bit off of one side and the bottom.

UJ no no no. the focal point IS that one peak. It's fine how it is. What you're decribing would change the whole feel of the peice, but not really in a bad way, if you know what I mean. It would make it become more a photo of a general mountin instead of focusing on the one peak wich gives that peak a feeling of importance or presence.
Ofcourse mabey I'm just a babbling idiot.

No no no that's how I feel the feeling of the piece should be :D
You can break as many design rules as you want, but if you want to get your pics on a choclate box :)

Terragen is a landscape tool kinda like Bryce but with a less friendly interface and far better realism.
As for your suggestions, done and done. I have not rendered it again, simply cropped it as specified.
Here it is (http://www.pabuk.com/cgi-bin/forums/ikonboard.cgi?act=Attach;ID=4;f=6;t=28;p=234)
These images were originally posted in my own forums. Please join (http://www.pabuk.com/cgi-bin/forums/ikonboard.cgi?act=SF;f=6) if you have some free time.

UJ my suggestion has nothing to do with design rules. i don't even know what the rules are. :) i just FELT everything I said.

Well you have both versions now, which do you prefer?
In some ways I prefer the first because like you said the peak is the focal point so it should be central. But I also like the cropped version because it has that more conventional feel of a photograph.
So I am undecided. :D

I still like #1
It'd be great for a desktop wallpaper.

I already have it set as my desktop, thats why it is 1280x960 (the res I use). :)

I think you need to make more ripples (just a little) in the water. I know Bryce can do that at least :)

That will be all. :)

It can do that easily yes, but I was aiming for very still water to maximise the level of reflection. If anyone agrees with you I might make one with more ripples.

Thanks for the second version. The mountain looms a bit more.
Touch of extra menace. :D

How would you do it in bryce anyway? with water planes I could never figure out how do do custom ripples.
PabUK

Why would you need custom ripples? There are plenty of water presets already in Bryce.

The first picture is so beautiful and serene. I set it as wallpaper on my computer.
Thanks for sharing with us :)

Any chance of a summer pic? I'm very cold at the mo and finding it hard to type anything. I have gloves on too. Ever tried typing like that? My fingers are about 3x the size of the keys!

Thanks for all the kind comments. :)
Phily Baby, I don't think I can be bothered to do another 1.5 hour render just to get another 64 pixels width, couldn't you just stretch it? Pleeeease. :)
Also, a summer pic is a very good idea. I could do with it too, my hands are going stiff they are so cold! I'll try and do one soon.

Or a scene of a great wood, across hills and lakes and stuff.
that would be my desktop..
But off course this is just a suggestion ;)

I like the idea but I don't think trees are even possible in Terragen. :(

hehe, Pab I was only joking :D you can get trees in bryce, but I'm getting tired of these warm pics, I've had them too long.

Those pics are very pretty! The first one is just a bit TOO warm for my liking though. Looks more hell warm than cosy warm. :D

:D very nice Pab.
How do you get everything so smooth? whenever i make something, its always pixelated, and makes it looks rather ugly...
Xerxes
29th November 2001, 00:58
I believe it would depend on the resolution of the individual object- am I right? (I don't use the program)
PabUK
29th November 2001, 02:26
Actually I have no idea. I didn't do anything special. If you are using Terragen it shouldn't look blocky at all. Of course it can sometimes, like closely zoomed in to a bit of mountain or whatever.
And Bryce isn't made by Metacreations anymore, they sold it to Corel a while back. Corel released version 5 of Bryce. Not that I care either way.

hmmm.....im not sure. heres just a couple of mountains, nothing special...still looks blocky and pixelated.

I know for a fact Bryce mountains have different resolution settings... you can instantly recognize newbie bryce stuff because the resolution controls are not as super obvious as the rest of the interface.
PabUK
29th November 2001, 14:01
Thats true, but I would argue that you shouldn't have to play around with such controls just to stop your landscape looking like it was hastily carved out of ice with a pickaxe. :)
