Whenever I use a PNG file that is a cutout, meaning it has a lot of edges, like a cut out of another graphic, Winamp3 puts these ugly thin black lines around it. Is it just my terrible Photoshop skills or does Winamp3 need some work?

Can you give is a shot how it looks like...
also when it doesnt have a layer behind it of course it looks ugly cause it's anti aliased ( I think ) and you need to add desktopalpha="1" (only for XP and 2k)

also, i have another question... how do you make a PNG translucent. I can do it in photoshop, but after I save the document, it isn't translucent on the desktop. I wanna be able to see the my desktop through my skin (this is a different skin from the one in the link above btw). Can I do that?

you can always try.
basically, what we're saying is that you need to put THIS in your XML:
<layout *blablabla* desktopalpha="1">
notice how the value is "1", not "!".

I'm not that big of an idiot.. I realize it was a one aka "1". Thanks for the clarification though. However, this still didn't work. if you look at the pic i placed on this site (an anime shot of Yuri from Dirty Pair Flash) you'll see the lines - this is with the desktoalpha="1" enabled. Please help, this happens with ever skin I make, it sux...

The black lines are just from how you have made the skin transparent. PNG's don't do soft edges very well, and therefore you'll have to go round with a fine brush to get rid of all the black pixels.

thanks to everyone anyway, but i found out what the prob was. It was a winamp prob. I was using beta one, and when i switched to beta2, the black lines didn't show up. beta2 rocks!
