View Full Version : Nothing but Blank!

I installed Milkdrop last night and the only thing that I get that shows is the song titles, they fade away, and then the screen goes dark and nothing.

I'm running W98, ATI pro lite AGP, ES1869 Sound Card, on a 400MH machine with KMD chip. All my drivers are up to date.

When I first installed it I got the above problem, then the entire screen lined and flickerd on the second try. In windowed mode with some tries--it just froze up. I reinstalled "MD" later and got back the the dark screen again. I've tried everything in troubleshooting and nothing works. :weird:

Ya know, I hate hearing how good the plug-in is and then I can't see it!!!! Am I just blind?

Any help would be appreciated and I'll be checking back here a lot. Thanks--Wallace

Post the debug file to the boards.

In options select create debug and post the file from the root of C.

First let me thank you rovastar for the reply.

Here is my latest debug file. In the process of trying out MD again, something strange happened. I got to see about 1 inch of color patterns at the top of the screen. Something new. Then I tried it in windowed mode and got a window, but also got 3/4 of the entire screen covered in front of it with no way to close it. It was writing some of the visuals and flickering heavily. I had to exit with ctrl/alt/del.

Also there seems to be some residual memory happening since if I bring up the help screen, it will remain when I restart the program again. I hope this helps.

Thanks again--Wallace :)

I don't know much about the debug files but Milkdrop thinks that every thing is ok from it.

As you have an old ATI card try (from the documentation - known issues)

e. ATI rage mobility 8mb chipset (on many laptops): from the Milkdrop config panel, you must set the texture size to 256x256, otherwise you'll get weird garbage & flickering at the bottom of the screen.

g. ATI cards & desktop mode: try enabling the "Try for RGB overlay before trying YUV-types". Many ATI cards support RGB overlays but not YUV overlays.

Otherwise have you instaled Geiss' other new plugin SMoke (from www.Geisswerks.com) as problems with one are normally the same with the other plugin. ANd again post the debug file.

Hope it helps,

Rovastar

Unless I am at your Pc and have control for a while I would not be able to fix it for you, bring it over and you will be running all my killer presets in a few, my professionalism is so good that almost any pc will be running Md without a flaw shortly after I resolve all the problems. SM

SM You are not really helping.......

Wallace

I just downloaded DirectX 8.1 as a side notion and that didn't help. Nor did anything else, and I have read the documentation and tried about everything before I came here and asked for help. I guess this just won't work for me.

I didn't try the SMOKE since that seems to need more HP than my system can muster.

The only reason I really posted this is because this was the avenue I read to follow from Geisswerks. I have received error notations in the debug files but I figured you wouldn't want 47kb's of runtime showing them.

SM, do you always come across as a jerk? Or am I somehow mistaken? You don't strike me as too "professional", unless of course it has something to do with being a professional ____ _______. :p

Rovastar, Thanks again for at least trying to help. Talk about a professional--at least you don't have to have it sitting right in front of you to offer a good try.;) Thanks--Wallace

If it helps jyou, I've got the same problem with Milkdrop.
My PC:
P2 400Mhz, 128MB, ATI Rage Pro 3D 8MB, Windows 98, DirectX 8.0a.

Geiss and Smoke are running perfectly, but MilkDrop only shows the fading title and nothing more.

Wallace,

Sorry I could not help but MilkDrop does eat a load of the old video memory so maybe it part of the problem. I seem to remember that ATI and voodoo cards sometimes have problems + MD was not the greatest fan of win98 and me. BUt new version are coming out all the time so try back in a month or two so maybe you will get lucky... but it may be time to upgrade - quoting from Jaws 'Gonna need a better boat'.

Or if anyone else can help??

and actually normally SM is a fine member on these boards I do not know what has got into him over the last 24 hours. (prob too much drink and drugs)

Alphablue if you have tried all the below suggestions I am not sure but try the usual - different version of drivers, newest direct x, etc. I cannot get much from the debug file expect that it is trying to use the texture size of 512x512 and your card you best try 256x256 (same for wallace). COnfig/texture size.

DOes the texture size make any difference to you? Post the debug again when you have set the lower texture size.

ALso sometimes I have noticed recently on my machine that Milkdrop does not start sometimes - the loaded preset displays nothing. Try pressing space to which between presets. A long shot but it my work.

Shame you ppl cannot see it cause it is a sweet plugin.

Wallace I am sorry I did not mean to upset you last night and I was only joking around, but if I could think of something for you to try I will let you know. I hope you can get Milkdrop working soon though because it is such a killer pluging nothing like it. The only thing I can think of for you to do, and it is alot of work and it still may not work after you do it is Format your whole pc and start from scratch. Also check to see what you have ruuning in the background you might have something conflicting or trying to do something when MD is trying to run. Well Rovastar can help you much more than me, so I will let him take over from here unless I think of something else. Once again I am sorry for playing last night and like Rova said I usually am not like that, was very drunk last night. SM

The changed texture-size doesn't help, I've already tried that. The other presets also only show the fading titles.

Does MilkDrop work with many shadow or transparency effects? This is a well-known problem of my old ATI. Then it may be a conflict with OpenGL or DirectX.

When I use the old driver from the Win98-CD (ATI 3D Rage Pro [atir3], 5-15-1998), MD shows first the fading title and then some figures, which get darker and then I've the same blank screen as before. Theses figures have the colors of the option "Colored-lens 3D glasses" at the rand in in the middle the result of both.
My actual driver is RAGE PRO TURBO AGP 2X [1-18-2000].

Hope this will help to find the problem.

I am having exactly the same problem, I have a pentium 4 2ghz processor a SiS 650 graphics card with 64 mb ram on and i also have 192mb ram I am running Windows XP I have direct X 9.0b and I can run UT2004 on low setting on my pc. I can only see the song title I have tried lowering the framerate, resolution and running it in both windowed and full screen modes, even at 3fps i get nothing but a few polygons when starting the plugin then after it fades nothing unless it is text, all text is white and displays without problems. It works worse in windowed mode than in full screen. The lower the resolution the more 3d effects I see before it fades and returns to blackness.I have attached a screenshot with all displays open. Hopefully that will help to solve our problem:up:

Just downloaded smoke and that doesn't work either, again all text in menus works but no visualizations  :hang:

YES!!!!!! MILKDROP WORKS!!! I just found an update for the sis 650 graphics card I have, and milkdrop seems to be working fine, so if anyone else is having trouble try updating your graphics card drivers, look for the manufactureer of your pc if you have a strange graphics card like me. :D :) :D :)
