sonique seems better for dance or heavy bass music on my system but doesn't clear up any pops or hiss.

sonique 2 is non windowed (components and stuff)
winamp 3 is windowed (pills aren't windows)

some people like windows some people dont :D

I think sonique 2 will give winamp 3 a run for its money when its out. Im going to use it. as well as winamp 3. I just hope they are cross compatible and play nice with eachother (no file stealing) I think there is too much of a good thing and too much winamp3 could rot the mind.

Better Speakers can make your music sound better, Sonique 1.whatever sounds slightly better than winamp 2.something. Go ahead shoot me down but it does through many different speakers and sound settings.

sonique's decoder sounds better than winamps decoder, the reason i use winamp is cuz i dont need eye candy (although 3 is very pretty :)) and it uses like 0 extra power (sonique uses 25% cpu for me winamp uses 0) so my battery in my laptop lasts longer (about 17 minutes compared to sonique)

RM - Those are some good points.

Oh yeah- If I may point out, all my mp3's (and there are loads of different genres in there) sound great via Winamp. No thanks to Blade; after encoding songs through blade I had to delete 'em all, and use Lame. Lame rocks.

The only advantage Sonique has over Winamp is their visualization. It's comparable to AVS in quality, and surpasses AVS in speed.

Here (http://www.mars.org/home/rob/proj/mpeg/compliance/)'s also a good MP3 decoder test. If you want some enhancement in low quality MP3's, MAD (http://www.mars.org/home/rob/proj/mpeg/mad-plugin/) seems to be quite good for decoding those.

if u gonna read decoder readouts understand what they mean.
those reports are based on a old aE version (4.888 was the last in sonique 1.xx) guess what the versions between 4.6 and 4.888 do? get rid of those lil bugs..
aE had a bug in and made it sometimes missed things 10khz range.. this made on paper it look pretty bad, however is 99% unnoticable to your ears.. either way that same bug is gone, and was the only fault the whole decoder ever got (otherwise it was frame perfect)

therefore aE is arguable the BEST decoder out at the moment.(even more so for those perfectionist that the bug was fixed)

also u may also note a 20 band PCM EQ in sonique.. for when precision of sound is required (i've heard all to many times people say that there is more bands then possible.. but its quite simple, if u want a decent EQ use sonique) it will also effect the sound of your cda files to (yay!!) not to many players can say this..

also is the winamp 3 decoder changed in anyway over the winamp 2 one? (its the fhg one, so umm what can do to it??) there should be 0 difference in sound from winamp2 to winamp3

OH and lycos laid of all bar 2 people (andrew and ian) those 2 were meant to continue the player, but they quit shortly after..
thats the reason why 2 guys were plucked from the lycos music team to go work on sonique2

Because of the MASSIVE support from plug-in developers for the Winamp architecture, Winamp can do anything Sonique can do, but better.

actually soniques in/output plugin implementation is much is better, but the programmers made stuff for winamp (maybe cause it was there from the start, and they dont wanna move), go figure. You cant expect team sonique to do everything.. but sonique's out-of-the-box decoder **SHOULD** beat winamp's fhg, and will equal or better MAD depending on the file. EQ's are nice for when u wanna fix a crap sounding file, but i prefer to listen to a decent recorded track, and soniques default EQ beats winamp's..

winamp's best points is its plugin support and is the reason why i and many others have it installed as a 2nd peference.. as quite simply put, u cant do some stuff on sonique (like manage playlists properly and play exotic file formats)

Winamp is a darn fine program, winamp3 will be even better. The reason im here is to read stuff about winamp3, i just dont post on it yet, cause im still catching up on winamp3 basics :)

I miss Sonique 1.505 :( The last good version of Sonqiue. Even though it had this annoying CDDA bug.

I Actually like the new Sonique - and with the speed the winamp development takes, i might just make the switch soon. Hope the Hybrid version is worth the wait.
