View Full Version : bugs in 1.02 beta2

two oddities that I've recently discovered with regards to framerate, and they're probably best answered by Ryan, if he reads this:

"Fix slow text" doesn't seem to work anymore. On some presets, it works a little, on others, it's pretty bad. Most presets will drop by about 10fps when I put the fps monitor on. My recent "rainpainting 2" preset drops by 30 FPS! Maybe it's something specific with the preset, I don't know. I'd like to know what's causing this though.

The framerate seems WAY lower in fullscreen mode than in windowed mode (even with a fullscreen window at the same res) - fullscreen is usually about 20fps slower. Why is this? I would expect that things would go faster in fullscreen, as windows doesn't have to worry about drawing in the desktop or anything - plus, 3d videocards are designed to run directx apps in fullscreen...

Strangeness...

Krash just some feedback to your post, but when I have FPS on I get no difference in the speed at all if I run any preset and then put on fps it is still the same speed under my machine running windows 2000 and I always run with fix slow text off, but on my ME side I always run with fix slowtext on, because it does help with the text speed quit a bit. The only text that slows down my win 2000 side is the T button and the custom message text. I do not know why you have it and I don't, I could only assume it has something to do with your vid card or win XP, but you would know more about this then me. Let me know it you figure it out, because my new machine will have XP if they come out with a sevice pack by then otherwise I will reformat it with 2000. SM

Krash, something for you to try. In more options set font face to arial, font size to normal and font options to none on all 3 font settings and then try your fps button and see if it affects the speed then. Let me know. SM

Nope, font settings don't affect it.

What vid card are you running, SM? I'm on a GF2, and this has happened before in win98 and win2k (before the fix slow text option was available) and now again in XP.

And to check that you know what I'm talking about - turn off all the onscreen text, and levae the preset running for a little while. Then turn the fps meter on and off very quickly - what fps did it read? Now, turn the fps meter on and leave it on. Once it stabilises, what fps?

Krash, I get the same framerate (albeit 30fps) whatever I do on "rainpainting 2". Putting text / titles on makes no difference to the framerate. And, for some reason, ticking the slow text box doesn't seem to give me a speed increase anymore, whereas it always used to as far as I remember... very strange. Running Win98SE, Intel 4MB vid card, Celeron 667, 128MB RAM.

Also, while we're on the subject of bugs, here are some minor ones: Winamp still says it's v1.02beta1, not beta2, and the view documentation causes an "error in ShellExecute" on my machine.

In regards to the windowed mode, what resolution does it run at? The same res as the desktop? Because I get 30fps in 640 x 480 in fullscreen on rainpainting 2, and run my desktop at 800 x 600, and get the same or slightly better fps in windowed mode... hmmm....

BTW Krash, if Rainpainting dropped by 30fps on my machine, it wouldn't be moving at all :)

Krash I am running an ATI mobillity M4 32meg and fps as no effect at all on my presets, and fix slow text on only slows it all down a bit text or not. I can have fps on, playlist on, preset list on, preset name and whatever all at the same time and still does not effect my speed one bit. Like I said only the T button (song title) and the custom message text slow it down. It would be very upsetting to me if it were otherwise, so it must be the vid cards themselves. I hope if Ryan fixes this for you it does not make a problem for me. Well I will tell you in older versions (don't remember which ones) things were different. Well I hope you get it resolved. One question for you, does the M button slow you down. I am still at the same speed with that too. In other words for example if I am playing snuggles I always get 59.5 frames per second. text or not. If I pick a preset where I always get 29.8 it is always 29.8. Hope this helps. SM

Hrm, well now that we've got the official 1.02, I'm not getting the massively high speed that I once was. Now I'm down to about 55fps on rainpainting2, with or without any text displaying. Fullscreen is better than it was, but still not as good.

Illusion: only 30fps on rainpainting2? Man, that sucks. You should see how it looks at 70+ fps (what I was getting in beta 2). When the 3 ripples are getting almost 25 fps EACH, it looks oh so smooth. Same with the original rainpainting. Looks much better at a higher framerate.

In windowed mode, I'm running my screen at 1024x768x32, with the window taking up 100% of the horizontal space, and about 90% of the vertical space. When running fullscreen at 1024x768x32, I get a fairly significant decrease in speed (or at least, I did. now that we're in official 1.02, the difference isn't as great)
