Ack. Java 1.3 like Limewire. I didn't like it. Get Bearshare and just don't install the third-party spyware.

Gnucleus kicks ass. hands down. 0, i repeat, ZERO spyware. open source (if it means anything to you). Easy to use, and yet not cheezy.
feel the love at http://www.gnucleus.net

When you install Bearshare you are given the option of whether or not you want to install the "third party software". If you choose not to install this spyware, it doesn't install it. The problem is some people fly through the installation process without reading anything and just clicking OK.
Gnucleus has no spyware period. Both programs are very user-friendly.
Ad-Aware by Lavasoft is a good program that will search and remove spyware from your system. Unfortunately their server is down right now, but if you search for it on Google, you'll find somewhere to download it.

and i installed it on a 'community' (bunches of people use it) computer at school just for kicks to see what it comes up with. searched for a while and i had to laugh when the red number read 213.
