Check this out www.streamzap.com (http://www.streamzap.com) . It's a USB peripheral that works with WinAmp. It allows you to control WinAmp from across the room -- how cool is that?!

You still have to download and install the software that lets all of that happen.

I am not against it, it just seems a bit pointless to me though, the whole idea of a remote for your PC.

's a bit like having a remote control starter for your car. Nice, but you've still got to get in to the thing to drive it.

With this, you can launch WinAmp and change tracks without even looking at your computer. Turn off your monitor if you want. Use your PC as a stereo component. Of course, having playlists setup makes this work a bit better.
I've got a PC on permenantly connected to my hifi - I use the remote that comes with the Creative dxr3 and Remote Selector software to control Winamp. It works great, and means I can select the next track, change the volume, play a CD or whatever all without getting up and turning on the screen.

I just got a remote for winamp off eBay and it kicks ass. It comes in handy if you use winamp a lot.

The nice thing about the streamzap one is that you don't have to buy a special sound card. I already have an Audigy (not the one with the remote), so it could be a good add-on due to the external USB connection.
The dxr3 is a DVD decoder card - I bought it ages ago to watch DVDs on the TV, and it came with a remote. And then recently I discovered that Remote Selector (a region-free thing for DVDs) could be made to control Winamp as well as the Creative's DVD Player.
This pleased me. :D

Nuts, I was hoping the X10 MouseRemote would be the first one out with USB connection. See http://www.x10.com/products/x10_mk19a_1.htm
I believe this one uses RF transmitter rather than infrared. It's geared toward home automation so it can control electrical outlet switches for lights and appliances, for example, as well as act as an input device for your PC (via serial port, I think).
I'm wondering if anyone here has any exposure to this X10 remote, and especially any testimonials about X10's PC software interface. Also, can the X10 receptor for PC receive input from those really fancy, programmable A/V RF remotes (ex.Phillips Pronto or H/K or Marantz?).
Whoa, I just found a remarkable site for remote controllers, try:

Hey... I just got my Streamzap PC Remote yesterday. I am very impressed. The software is very slick, no install issues. It works with Winamp out of the box. USB is much better than an RS-232 based device, this is year 2002 after all, not 1988. I recommend it.
