Even though I have the ATI Radeon 7000 Video card which supports 3D, etc and direct X 8.1, etc....EVERY time I try to run the Milkdrop visualizations in Winamp I get an error message saying: "your hardware does not supoort 3D effects" and then XP freezes up.....WHAT's going wrong here, and how can I FIX it????
Thanks in advance for any assistance,
"Cheers"

I thought that ATI cards were all ok for MD nowadays.:( ATI grrrr
Try the latest drivers.
Just checked the ati site ATI drivers (http://www.ati.com/support/products/pc/radeon7000/winxp/radeon7000winxpdrivers.html?cboOS=Windows+XP&cboProducts=RADEON+7000&cmdNext=GO%21)
and try a collection of drivers - the latest is v6.13.10.6037 (another stupidily high version number - whatever happened to 1, 2, 3, 3.1, etc) dated recently on the 20th March 2002. Or try a couple of older ones there.
You could post a debug file to see if me or anyone else here has any ideas. You never know Ryan might even have a look......ok maybe not then..:):D

Thanks for the response.....
However,
I've installed the latest ATI drivers for the radeon 7000 - again, but still this problem persists.....I was wondering....I have the new Samsung LCD screen and use Portrait Display software (XP 6.4 version) by Pivot in order to let me flip the screen to "portrait view....could this somehow be creating a conflict with my Milkdrop 3D function??????

I don't know if your LCD s/w is affecting MD I am only a humble CRT boy. It seems unlikely but you never know. Could you disable this??
It is odd that the whole of XP freezes up mind you? When you say freeze can you CTRL/ALT/DEL and kill MilKDrop??
If I try and run MD on XP at full screen with at too high texture size I get an error message box that I cannot click on to get rid off. And have to kill the app.
If I run MD in windowsed mode I can use the x to close the offening MD window.
Does anyone else have a ATI Rad 7000 running under Xp?
Attach the debug file. To see if it gives any clues.

Hi Rovastar,
YEP, it's the Pivot screen flip software that's causing the problem.
When I rotate the view back to the regular "landcape" position MILKDROP works fine.....strange eh, even thought the Pivot prog is still activated....I guess the change of position somehow effects the Milkdrop functions....
IF I flip it during a MD visualization the system doesn't FREEZE like before, but the screen just goes black with no effects, flip it back again, and it contines fine again....
FANG Salot for the input :-)

My guess would be that Milkdrop expects certain aspect ratios when operating in fullscreen. When MD sees that the aspect ratio is b0rked (i.e 3:4, rather than 4:3), it probably panics, and closes down. that "does not support 3d" error message is a generic one, that basically means there's something wrong with your video settings somewhere.
If Ryan reads this (you there, Ryan?), he should be aware of this, and be able to sort something out.

i dunno..i have a GF2MX from Creative Labs and Im having the same error msg. I have a normal, flat-screen monitor (ViewSonic A75f), GF2MX, 1.3 gig amd athlon. Why won't this work? Ive tried reinstalling the new drivers for my video card and ive installed DirectX8.1..whats the deal?

GF 2 MX cards work fine with MilkDrop.
The latest drivers should be fine all (they were updated at nVidia (http://www.nvidia.com) a week or two ago) but you could try an older copy of the nVidia drivers.
Umm don't know could you get your hands on a normal (not flat screen a CRT) monitor just to make sure it is not your falt screen monitor.
What OS are you running?
What version of MilkDrop are you running (1.02 the latest)?
It maybe you flat screen for some reason.
New Drivers (28 March 2002) for it here:
http://tom.viewsonic.com/support/drivers.htm
Or it may be that the drivers supplies by viewsonic are not compatiable so remove completely. Let Windows find the flat screen drivers itself. Test MilkDrop then install the latest drivers for the screen from Viewsonic...maybe try older versions too.
ALso have you got any silly 'monitor friendly tools' with your monitor like above maybe there are some setting there or you could uninstall it.
Hope it helps.
If you still have problems post the MilkDrop debug and the milkdrop_config.ini files here.

o yea, i forgot to add im usin win2k, usin v1.02 and i just downloaded the newest video card drivers today..i think ill try getting some drivers for this monitor.
about the monitor: i can, but not right now..im too lazy lol. but it SHOULDN'T be the monitor's fault, unless it's using some wierd software along with it
i read their site and said something about GeForce problems that tey're fixing right now so i might be able to get this working with version 1.03

?? Their site?
Oh I see ...www.milkdrop.co.uk:) I forgot I had put that message up there about the problam with Nvidia driver (I best change it on there to explain a little more). But MilKDrop still runs it is just a little misaligned you probably would not notice but it is little annoying to the preset authors. There is a post on these forums about it.
Many people here have the same set up as you and it all works fine. Hell I had the same (AThlon 1.33, GF2MX but CRT) until I updated too XP.
Post your debug file and milkdrop_config.ini it may have some pointers.

Also please attach a debug file to the post. Go to MilkDrop options and tick the debug file box and then the debug file is created at C:\m_debug.txt.

Also try running Smoke at www.geisswerks.com as it has a similiar 3d engine. ANd check the forums for that too to see if your problem is there.
I will answer in more detail tommorrow.

Umm sadly no real help at the moment.
OK next step test direct x.
Run diagdx and click display tab and run the tests there. So if all these run OK. The click 'SAve all Information' and post the results here.
And if you get a chance test MD with a normal monitor.:) I know it shouldn't matter but it is the only thing that is different.:)
