View Full Version : Can't explore cd when Winamp is running
14th June 2002, 15:20
I've been using 2.77 for some time now on my Win2K OS with Sony CRX160E CD/RW, 800M P3, 256M RAM machine and it has always worked wonderfully. Recently, I upgraded to 2.80 and have discovered a very strange bug. Anytime Winamp is running in the background and insert a data cd, the cd will not run. Hence, explorer does not even recognize a cd is in the drive. I tried the patch suggested in other posts, but to no avail. I overwrote the files with 2.79 with same error, then with 2.78 with same error. When I overwrote with the previous 2.77, everything works wonderfully again. Obviously, something updated in 2.78, and carried through to present release, is at the root of this error. Might this be addressed before the next release?
I hope this is the correct forum to post this to. I have searched and found several "Don't post that here or I'll <flame/delete/lock> your post. Go here: <link>" (you click the link and, of course, find another of the same admin/mod post at the top of the new thread-- will happen about 4 times before you get here). If I have posted incorrectly, please feel free to bomb my post via your favorite method. This is my first post, so I'm sure I must be incorrect.

1)Well atleast someone new here to the forums reads the Sticky's. Those "admin/mod post at the top of the new thread" you talk about are just kind of like rules for the forums.
2)You posted in the right forum. And also, if you post the wrong thing here, the mods'll just move your post to the correct forum.
Okie, now to try to help. Try doing a Uninstall -> Reinstall procedure. (http://forums.winamp.com/showthread.php?threadid=50818) Install 2.80 when you reinstall. If the problem still persists, then report back here.

Thanx for the prompt reply! I tried the uninstall/reinstall, but was unsuccessful. Admittedly, 2.77 is an excellent version and is still my defaul media player. I'll have to try 2.80 on another machine with same OS but different peripherals and see if I can duplicate the problem. Will post results here.
Also-- Thanx for your candor in reply to my first post and concerns over posting to the right forum. The forum is obviously well-moderated. Not all that common anymore.

Maybe try updating your drivers for your CD-RW Drive, I found this page (http://sony.storagesupport.com/cdrw/crx160ea1.htm) for your drive's model. Let us know about how it goes on the other computer.
P.S.-The mods here are real great, people like DJEgg, Sawg 2.0, ethan_h, and more relly make this feel like an online home for many.

Well, I haven't had an opportunity to try my little test, yet, but will definitely post the results.
BTW-- how coincidental is it that you would be helpin' me out a little? i'm from LA, too! Only I'm what's referred to as a "LA Yankee" from Monroe (although I'm originally from Shreveport-- got transferred by my employer).

Just let us know whenever you have the results. I'm not in any hurry, this forum is basically where I spend my whole day.
P.S.- Wow, that's pretty kewl. But I'm also jealous because ya'll get a good name like LA Yankees while down here in Terrebonne we are known as Cajun Coona$$es but we still have an advantage in something, the seafood. We could basically go walk out to the bayou near our house and have our food for supper in an hour.:weird:  ;)

Well-- I ran my OS test and upgraded to 2.80 on the home comp and it was as you predicted. I cannot duplicate the problem on the home comp. I go out now in search of a driver upgrade for the other comp's cdrw.
Thanx for all the help! And God Bless Louisiana!

I didn't upgrade the driver for the Sony CDRW, but I did reinstall it after upgrading to Winamp 2.8. Now everything works lovely. Comp now recognizes a data cd inserted with winamp 2.8 running in the background.
