No limit all, cept for your hard drive size.
A fairly fast processor would be a help as well, speeds up sorting huge skin lists....

They look good and all, and there fun to make, but most get boring quickly, so I have about 20.

It's kind of a shame. Ever since I started skinning, I've almost stopped using other people's skins entirely. I frequently add to and prune my skin collection (124 skins at the moment), but that seems to be mostly out of principle :D. Most of the time, when I'm using winamp, I've a got a crappy, half-finished skin that I'm working on loaded.:(

yes, exactly! mine is almost always a garbage hodge-podge of in progress skin parts and elements taken from other places to build on. like a droid graveyard.
I think I have 30 or so skins downloaded on my linux partition for xmms and 15 on my windows partition for winamp, with some crossover in there. Nothing stays for long.

I currently have 27 skins, 11 of them my own. I usually leave NLog running because that's the only skin my sister likes. I also have a misc. folder that holds skins I don't use much but still like, and reference. (reference is when I see how a skin tackled a certain problem, like stretchy Pl and the Main Ws bug.)
But anyway, skies the limit as far as skins go. As many as your hard drive can hold. The only drawbacks are loading the skin list takes longer, and it's going to be really hard to go through the list looking for a skin in a sea of thousands. You could always index the skins in several folders, but then you gotta change the skins directory everytime you want to go from Silence,The to Alienmind,Nucleo. (Imagines stuck-up librarian with ultra organinzed skins folders listening to System Of a Down on a grunge metal skin)

I used to own about 150-200 skins once. I then realized I didn't need all those skins. I'm now down to 120 skins. Many of I don't even used at all, maybe about only 10 that I frequently like/use. Looking back, I find that I have some skinners way back when I first started downloading skins, and never knew about it at first. I don't know why I still have them though.

I've had a fluctuating amount of skins from 70-120 for a while now. I like to think that I'm slowly refining the list. Every now and then I add a skin I particularly like; eventually, skins that haven't stood the test of time get deleted - only the very best make themselves a permanent home in my skins folder.
My list has changed a lot since I started using winamp at 1x size too. I used to use it at 2x size, and many skins just look crap like that. For example, Kurtz looks like shit at 2x, but now that I've been using it at 1x, it has become one of my favourite skins ever.

Even though I'm one of those collector-type people who hates to throw anything away, I can't imagine having more than 50 skins at one time!
I have 30 current skins, and even then that's too much. 16 are mine (4 of which are completed), 10 are others' which I like but never use, 3 I've downloaded just to look at, and one is a "default" skin when I'm sick of looking at my own.
I think it's a great idea to keep a skin-in-process loaded. You can catch a lot of faults on a half made skin when you fire up the computer a day or two later after having forgotten about it. Fresh eyes (and a fresh brain!) are a blessing.

The strange thing is that even with all the skins i have (somewhere around the 700 mark at the moment) i always seem to use my own. and yeh, whenever i have a skin in progress it becomes the skin i use.

Hmmm, I have 194 skins right now. Five are incomplete, though. I have it on random rotation, though, since I'm not designing a skin currently.
