Rather than bump the already long MOTW thread, already in its second incarnation, I'm hijacking Boplicity's idea and starting a new thread. This weeks MOTW is Road To Perdition. (http://us.imdb.com/Title?0257044) Directed by Sam Mendes, who did American Beauty, this movie doesn't really break any new gound, but it's beautifully filmed and wonderfully understated. It's a 1930's gangster story about a boy who finds out that his father is a hitman, and the consequences thereof. Not an action flick, most of the movie is character driven. A good tale of fathers and sons, and of the nature of justice and revenge.
For those just looking for some fun action, Reign Of Fire (http://us.imdb.com/Title?0253556) is a decent fantasy. The year is 2020. Dragons have returned and wiped out most of humanity. Standard action fare and a lot of fun.
I've been dying to see "Road to Perdition", it looks great. I'll give my little critique when I'm finished downloading it... er, I mean- when I've gone to the local movie theater and watched it like a law-abiding citizen. ;)
Actually the film is supposed to have been shot very artistically so I'm sure I will check it out on the big screen...
"Reign of Fire" doesn't interest me in the least. Oh vell, it should please those looking for camp.

I heard that Minority report is quite good.
I will probably go see it in the cinemas tomorrow. :)

"Based on a story by famed science fiction writer Philip K. Dick, Minority Report is an action detective thriller set in Washington D.C. in 2054, where police utilize a psychic technology to arrest and convict murderers before they commot their crime. Tom Vruise plays the head of this precrime unit and is himself accused of the future murder of a man he has never met."

Bop, make sure you download twenty-five minutes worth of trailers and an ad from The Foundation For A Better Life for the full theater experience. :p
BTW, Minority Report was pretty good. I attribute all the good bits to Phillip K. Dick and all the bad bits to Spielberg. :D
edited to avoid a double post

Oh, of course wouldn't have it any other way... plus, I got the popcorn all buttered up with chemical sludge and my computer chair is always sticky, so I guess I'm ready to watch. :D

I concur... the film starts out with some great philosophical questions and then quickly moves on to become an average action pic. For all the rave reviews that I read; I was a little disappointed.

Based on what I know from friends who have worked in movie theaters, you will have to also put a bit of urine in with the chemical sludge on the popcorn to get the true theater experience...
And I don't even want to know why your computer chair is sticky.

I loved minority report up until it started becoming goofy - where he was eating the moldy food, (They must have stolen that from the 3 stooges or something like it). And then dropping the eyeballs down to sewer only to grab them by the veiny part... that was inexcusably cheesy. It only reinforces my theory that spielburg has a fetish for dismembered limbs and body parts (Just think about all the movies he's had detached legs, arms)
IMHO, Spielburgs best movie is also his most underrated- "Batteries not Included." :)

I thought his most underrated movie was "Always" starring Holly Hunter, Richard Dreyfuss, and John Goodman:confused: which is my favorite of his works.

Hate be a pedantic X, but I think you have Spielberg mixed up with Matthew Robbins...
(S.S. was only exec. producer) :)

Well Shucks! It had all the elements of a spielburg film... ah well sucks to be him then. ;)
(Seriously though, anything with Jessica Tandy acting with her husband is top notch in my book- they were great together)

but you never see the two of them in the same room, do you?
I'll be going to spend my £4.20 on minority report soon (it was going to be today, but i opted for beer and apocalypse now dvd instead)

Road To Perdition's summaries nearly put me to sleep... i don't get it really. these sappy, slow, poorly lit movies just knock me out faster than the whole bottle of nyquil.
rarely do critics relate to the modern male. they frequently recommend movies with long stares, sap, dragging scenes and tiresome reflections.
i'm bored with those, i rather watch flies molt.
movies in general are boring me. have we seen it all? special effects are too obvious and over done. primarily spider-man, star wars episode 1 and 2. CG filler is the replacement for exciting, thoughtful or comedic scripts.
i detest teen movies, except for a few classics like Ferris Bueller's Day Off, Fast Times at Ridgemont High.
mmmm phoebe cates...

Speak for yourself! There are some men still left on the planet who appreciate beautiful cinematography, writing, and direction. I can't wait to see Road to perdition... it looks quite good.
Please don't tell me the "modern male" is one who appreciates Terminator movies as "high art"...

Tell 'em Xerxes. Even when I was younger I appreciated fine film. I love a film that's beautifully shot. And I find that a slowly paced movie, if done well, can be thousand times more emotionally charged than a fast paced one.
I just finished watching Gattaca (http://us.imdb.com/Title?0119177), which, in my opinion, is one of the best science fiction films ever made. In addition to having a powerful story about human potential, it is a treasure to watch. It is so beautiful, shot through blue and sepia filters, with no CGI effects to speak of. Since we haven't had a Movie of the Week for a while, I'm making this one last week's movie of the week. What are you waiting for: go watch it!
/me returns Movie of the Week authority back to its rightful owner, Boplicity: The Third Man.

Amen to that. :)
On a different note, I'm always laughing when i hear some people deeming Spielberg best director of all-time. What a slap-knee joke ! :D

Probably the same people who dress their poodle in a sweater when they take it out for a walk.

Saw it and MIB2 last night. Slept through Men in Black:rolleyes:
Reign of Fire was very cool though it coulda used more dragon carnage. The male dragon drooling was a nice touch:up:
