Internet Harassment
 

I've been reading the papers for the last few weeks and what with all the children being approached and harassed by people, abducted and worse, I was just wondering if anyone here has ever been harassed on the internet, be it via email, web boards similar to this one or chat forums? I'm not talking about flaming here, but real harassment by potential perverts, child molesters or criminals. Its never happened to me, but I've read so much about it now that it almost seems like an epidemic.

I personally have never been harassed by anyone online. It is the total opposite for me. I have met some really great people - and ended up making friends with some for life. I have met some people in person and have had great experiences. My children have never been harassed online either - I watch their internet usage very carefully.

A friend of my wifes had her daughter, who I think is 13, sneak out of the house to meet some guy she met on the internet. She got home and safe fortunately, but it was quite scary for the family.

Well there was this one lass who kept talking to me and asking me to phone her and meet up and everything, nothing sinister. In fact she's a great laugh and the most wonderful person in the world.
We're off out together now :).

i dunno, s1138 kinda creeps me hout when he talks about marridge, i mean, we havent even met yet and he's already naming our children O.o

I've never really been harrassed, just the occasional flaming. My brother has never been either.

The advice I can give is just what I tend to do.
1) Be paranoid. (This sounds like a joke but even a slight amount of this can help you out with matters on the net)
2) Never, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever give out personal info, except for your first name.
3) Be nice. :)
4) If you are being harrassed, leave the chat, or where ever it is you are, and dont go back.

I said I was 13 y.o. on ICQ's details, so I didn't have to complete the "personal info" form... (because of some US law I think, in which they can't ask personal info of 13y.o. and minors)...

That attracted this guy (girl?) who would keep asking for my pic, amongst other nasty things I won't mention here...

I used to use Phily Baby as my msn chat handle but too many blokes kept pm'ing me asking for pictures. I changed it to RinocerousMayonaise and now the girls pm me asking for pictures :D.

I only pm'ed my girl because she has a good name and now look what's happened. It's all in the name you choose as to whether people want to chat to you or not.

Hmm, except for a couple of random IM's which I simply closed, I gave managed to not get harassed online.

I've gotten harassed by little kids threatening to kill be on the mic at Yahoo chat rooms before just for saying something stupid like "I hate Honda Civics". I tell them I'm in my mid 30's and they shut up. Umm, ok... :igor:

harassment, no, never. However, i could well be meeting herbster (we used to go to the same school and were reuniteds in #*******), and possibly bilbo (who only lives a few minutes away from me):D
