Members opinion of Moderators

It's been a while now since I was made moderator, and in that time, people have expressed various opinions to me from one extreme to the other, from being helpful to being an asshole. While the compliments are always nice, people putting down what we do sometimes leads me to question some of my own decisions. I'm pretty sure its the same for all the other moderators here.

So out of curiosity, what do the members out there think of the twenty-or-so active moderators on the forums? Please answer honestly.

binary hero 11th September 2002 13:10

on the whole they are a good, fair, kind bunch...just a few overreactions *cough*squell*cough*. I wouldn't say humourless. just lighten up a bit.

[edit]no vote, there is no option that suits my point of view

InvisableMan 11th September 2002 13:10

i refuse to vote in that till i get a taste of moderatorship  :D

Naamloos 11th September 2002 13:13

most of the time helpful :)

patroclus22 11th September 2002 13:15

No opinion, really. Most of the time I don't even notice who the mods are. Of course, I don't break the laws, so they take no notice of me.

dylman 11th September 2002 13:21

No causes for complaint over here. The mods do a good job for little thanks, I think.

Twilightseer 11th September 2002 13:35

I personally think we rock (especially me), but I may (I emphasize "may") be biased.

:D

CremoNe 11th September 2002 13:40

this poll hasn't got really any meaning to me; how is it possible to give 1 opinion for 20+ mods?

there are differens behaviours and differnt moods;ethan_h you for instance are sometimes kind, sometimes "grumpy and humourless".

what i dislike is the lack of cohesion among you mo(a)ds.

c2R 11th September 2002 13:45

That's an interesting question...

I think that the moderators all do a very good job, there's perhaps the odd decision in the twenty-or-so months I've been here which I've thought is the wrong one - but considering the amount of tasks that the moderators have to do the percentage of decisions I would have questioned is very small indeed.

Certain mods are particularly helpful to newbies (DJEgg especially)... others are more hidden, in that they don't necessarily go out to help people - instead policing the boards and locking the odd thread. This balance seems to work well.

I think I agree with the way the boards are run - threads are usually only locked if they are leading into flame wars, or if they are duplicate posts (or, of course the million and one newbie bitches about Winamp 3 every day). The moderators come from a cross-section of society, and are all different ages and nationalities - which I feel is a good thing.

Also the moderators are all mature enough to respect users' and eachothers' opinions, even when they differ, which I think leads to a very important quality - that of evenhandedness when trying to resolve disputes.

Personally, if there's one complaint I have, it's that the moderators aren't stricter on spammers - if I made the rules, their links would be removed and they would be warned, and banned for a repeat offence.

Bop 11th September 2002 13:47

I think that for the most part you guys do an excellent job... as far as the poll is concerned, all of the above. Each mod has his own personality and the descriptions listed in the poll could be used to describe each mod... shall I start connecting the attribute to its respective mod? :p

Grumpy and humourless is already taken*. Feel free to attribute the remaining ones :D

* Mike : :D ;)

Schismx 11th September 2002 13:51

Bilbo = amusing and fun with a twist of evil. :D

Same for Xerxes.

lemon_chicken 11th September 2002 13:51

neccesary... other than that it depends on the mod, but i have never been treated at all poorly whilst being here.

Bop 11th September 2002 14:13

'seer, are you trying to get me to start a flame war? I won't specifically say anything about anyone because it's in bad taste but I think the balance is nice..

There are some some mods that are reserved and even-handed while others jump the gun and lock everything. And then there are mods that I have never seen do anything modly, it seems that because many of them don't close threads and hand out warnings those that do get bitched at, which isn't fair.

Overall I like the job you guys do... though I think everyone could be a little nicer to newbies (including the regular members).

Not at all. I just used your post as support for a little private joke with ethan_h. :)

Besides, I have to say that honestly, I don't care about people think of me.

Bop 11th September 2002 14:19

I think you're humorless and it cracks me up! ;)

baafie 11th September 2002 14:23

Personally, I think there are several moderators who are unfit for moderatorship. There are a few good ones, though. Overall I can say that.. the level of activity of some of the moderators is noticably decreasing. Most moderators are helpful, though.

CraigF 11th September 2002 14:31

i usually get away without being commented on in these things, i suppose that places me in the "more hidden" category.

ertmann|CPH 11th September 2002 14:52

apart from in the wa3 forums, you're doing pretty good! but i know we are pretty rebelious :)

J. Burnaway 11th September 2002 15:10

All in all, I think the mods do a good job. I like the varying personalities, from Bilbo on the left to Xerxes on the right, and everything in between. I like the way Mr. Jones pops peoples balloons in the skinning forums with a quick quip. ethan is always coming up with some weird stuff to read which I sometimes send around the office, and people ask "where do you get that stuff?" Have you seen how many "I hate WA3" gripes there are in the bitchlist that have been shut down quickly by Nem and Sawg? Good job. Mods are people too, with the same quirks, but dang most of 'em are funny. I don't go to all the forums, so I don't interract with all the mods, but mostly they are a good group.

Sandman2012 11th September 2002 15:44

I think the mods do a good job here. Occassionally somebody makes a decision that's different from what I might've done in the same situation, or that I don't quite understand the reasoning behind, but all in all the mods here do a great job.

pixiefied 11th September 2002 15:56

imo..there are to many! i mean if you are modding a forum say for instance bilbo and nem mod the gd forum and say mr.egg decides to come in a lock a few threads....does'nt that make you guys mad? are you really doing your job? i know you are all unpayed and enjoy being "modly men",but it would really get to me.i imagine you guys argue back stage about another mod coming into your forums and locking threads.

but other than that, your okey dokey.

james 11th September 2002 15:56

I agree with BH . . . there's no option here which suits my feelings.

The mods do get a lot of stick from some forum members which doesn't help matters very much!
Sometimes they can be a little heavy-handed or humorless, equally though sometimes things can go on past a joke and nothing is done.
I think that when people renounce their moderator status, it's a sign of how difficult the job is, and that it's impossible to please everyone.
Still, you guys do great :D ;) :winamp:

binary hero 11th September 2002 16:09

at one point i really didn't like you ethan, back when you were first modded, i thought you were amazingly arrogant and stupid...but that has changed now and i regret ever feeling that way about you. Please don't hold it against me :)

Possibly pixie, but a mod can't be here 24/7 - that's another reason why it's good to have moderators from both the US and Europe, so that there's always a mod around to lock threads if need be.

"they are Great personalitys, who are the life and soul of the forums, we all love you guys!"

Thats okay :) I still don't like you.....

:D

n_ick2000 11th September 2002 17:30

As moderators, you guys are doing fine. As far as I can tell, you guys help as needed.

randman 11th September 2002 17:33

I agree that overall you all do a great job. But at the same time you're all also human (except maybe Sawg and Bilbo ;) ). So I can't really cast a vote because I think you have all, at one time or another, shown some of those traits. But that's not a bad thing. It just shows you're human. :)

squell 11th September 2002 17:34

i think they are all doing a fine job, and keep everything in order quite well. :)

Jedi Gemstone 11th September 2002 18:08

I think moderators are very nice people who keep the forums and threads in order. ;)

Bilbo Baggins 11th September 2002 18:44

How many of your are telling us your real opinions, and how many of you are trying to be nice for phear of being banned? ;)

Just checking :p

squell 11th September 2002 18:48

I'm telling the truth. Although it would have been nice if my custom title had stayed longer..

dam 11th September 2002 19:19

I think the mods do a good job. Modding isnt easy.
But there are some times when I dont understand the course of action they take.
