Reanimation 18th September 2002 14:26

Okay, i'll get this thing going!

#1 = Chiquita Chad

#2 = E-Raser

#3 = Dekt

There all really nice skins, well done to you all, just thats my opinion, was quite hard but i make my mind up on things quick.

simon snowflake 18th September 2002 15:03

And the votes from Gent belgium are:

1st place : Not In Santiago

2nd place : E-Raser

3th place : Dekt

Mr_Tough_Guy 18th September 2002 15:26

I agree it with Reanimation they're all great skins

but here are my votes
#1 : E-Raser
#2 : Chiquita Chad
#3 : Dimichan

amp-phibian 18th September 2002 15:35

cant vote for themselves????

1= dekt

2= dimichan

3= eraser

they may not really be interested in the prize of this contest
and just want the props for being able to say their design won
so why hand out a total of 6 points to 3 of the other 4 skins
hell by giving there own skin each a 1st place vote (3pts they then must hand out a 2nd and 3rd)and those points maybe the reason that the voters skin doesn't win
its a contest and they are entrants
contest = win
whether their interested in winning or not

binary hero 18th September 2002 16:59

1. chiquita chad. IMO it is one of the best skins i have seen in a long time, and it deserves to win. The shapes used are beautifully abstract (i am talking mainly about the eq), much like the cover design. You are getting ather good at this 'ere skinning job :)

2. dekt, again a very good skin, great use of colour and consistency throughout just not as mustard-cuttingly good as chiquita chad's.

3. e-raser, the whole composition of it (with the dotted lines going over the eq, and the pl buttons) is great, and probably worthy of 1st/2nd place...just not quite, close call

sHoTTiE 18th September 2002 22:32

1 = Chiquita Chad <~~ very close w/ raser, but just beats him by || dat much.
2 = E-Raser <~~ very close w/ chiquita
3 = Not in Santiago <~~ looks most like the skin i woulda submitted if i didnt lose the .psd :) :)

e-raser 18th September 2002 22:54

well its too late, but i submited a newer ver. of my skin, its hasn't been published yet thought

chiquita chad 18th September 2002 23:06

1. dimichan
2. not in santiago
3. dekt

flatmatt 19th September 2002 00:38

1. chad
2. e-raser
3. dekt

I'd say the decider in my top two was the MikroAMP. Pretty much the part of the skin I use most often, so that's pretty important, and chad's was really well-done, while e-raser's was pretty much just the play/pause/stop symbol with a couple lines.

dimichan 19th September 2002 00:48

Whoa whoa, that's the old version of mine there! Where's the new one?

Anyways...

1. Dekt
2. Chiquita
3. NIS

 The version of your skin that is here is the same one that you posted at the Orb Thread through a link called "final entry". I just downloaded it from that link again and compared it with this one side by side, and I'm pretty certain they're the same. If there is a newer one, send it to me ASAP and I'll upload it ASAP. (I was wondering where the easter egg you were talking about was!)

send it here: dawidbleja(at)hotmail(dot)com

e-raser: Sorry dude, but you should have emailed it to me. :( I waited a day and a half, in which time I tried contacting you, checked deviantart.com and winamp.com/skins repeatedly for the updated version, and tried to access your homepage. After dekt and not in santiago had worked for much of the weekend to try and get their skins done on time, I didn't think it was fair for me to delay the process much longer, especially since, as far as I knew, you were only going to include a readme, anyway - so I included one for you (I just cut and pasted the info you had in your mbinner). By all means send me the skin now and I'll upload it ASAP. (address is above)

dimichan 19th September 2002 08:59

<--- points at avatar :o
ok, I deleted the new file and uploaded the old one by accident, yay me :p
REAL final version :p

StillWater 19th September 2002 10:26

IF YOU HAVE ALREADY VOTED, then I urge you to download Dimichan's skin again. It is the latest version of the skin (there was a mix up, and up until now an older version of the skin had been posted). There have been several button changes throughout the skin and the skin now has a considerably crisper style throughout. Please download it (from the link in Dimichan's post above) in case your votes would have been different had you seen the latest version. The new version of the skin is now in the original screenshot and the original download link (both at the top of this thread)

Jellby 19th September 2002 13:16

Here are my votes:

1.- Orblivious (by Dimichan): 3 points
2.- Auntie Aubrie (by Not in Santiago): 2 points
3.- The Orb Amp (by e-raser): 1 point

Of course, all 5 are great 5-star skins, but I had to choose, and I did it this way :)
Why? Well, I found the first two the most original and self-consistent, Orblivious being funnier and with more subtleties. Then I had to choose between the other 3, not easy, but e-raser's Orblivion (which I've named The Orb Amp, because Chiquita Chad's is called Orblivion too) catched my attention better and was more rewarding to the user (to me, at least). As I said, the other 2 are great too, and I'm glad I don't have to order them :)

Congratulations to all of you!

Unofficial vote count update:

(Unnoficial because I'm not guaranteeing that I didn't make a mistake. When it comes to the real vote count at the end, I'll count, and re-count, and re-count, the votes carefully)

Chiquita Chad:16
E-raser:14
Dekt:12
Dimichan:9 - Not In Santiago:9

I'm so happy with the quality of skins this contest has produced. And I'm obviously not the only one who thinks all the skins are great. The results speak for themselves. It's close, every skinner has been named #1 by at least one person, and anything can still happen ...

squell 19th September 2002 22:15

1. not in santiago
2. dekt
3. dimichan

simon snowflake 20th September 2002 06:32

Well done, guys! :)

simon snowflake 23rd September 2002 18:19

NINIIIIII, long time no see :D

ripe 23rd September 2002 19:55

Congrats to everyone, a very high standard of entries. They make for a great showcase of Orb covers, and all of them have made excellent use of their chosen art.

Alas, my own effort, Higher Than The Orb (Ripe's Skinning Excursions Beyond The Call Of Duty), never made it off the drawing board. This is probably a good thing, as I fear I would have let the side down, (but hey, the title was good) :D

It's very difficult to choose a winner, but I will tell you my personal favourites.
1. Dimichan
2. Dekt
3. Chad

Well done to everyone involved.

Nini 25th September 2002 08:31

:D

dekt 25th September 2002 22:56

Has everyone else in the contest submitted their skin to winamp.com/1001/devart/etc? I wasn't sure if they were automatically getting submitted to a site as part of the contest. I'm just not used to having a skin people might actually want to download. Heady days indeed! :)

not in santiago 26th September 2002 02:56

I haven't submitted to any sites, not even winamp. Why? It just hasn't occurred to me! :igor:

I worry about my brain sometimes . . . . :D

e-raser 26th September 2002 02:59

i vote for:
1st - not in sandiago
2nd - chiquita chad
3rd - dekt
nice work pple

dimichan 26th September 2002 03:08

submitted to winamp, didn't even think of the others though... right now I'm making minor fixes and updates to recent skins putting off cutting buttons and noting coords for WA3 project :p Which I really need to get to before my partner murders me! (I am a champion procrastinator)

StillWater 26th September 2002 06:44

No, I'm not doing any submitting. They're your skins, and you deserve to have full control over them. For those of you who don't already do so (ie. dekt, e-raser, Not In Santiago), I strongly suggest submitting to 1001 - it's a quality site.

simon snowflake 26th September 2002 06:48

I think these day's more wa2-skins are downloaded from there then from winamp.com.

I still think they should make a splash page here, so you can choose from the start where you go wa2 or wa3

dimichan 26th September 2002 09:40

Yeah, seems quite a few people still get confused looking for wa2 skins, and I know the vast majority of the people I know still use it most of the time just to save computer resources, myself included. I can't work in PS without my music going, and usually have my browser and AIM up as well, and WA3 slows things down noticeably for me.

As for 1001, yeah, I get more downloads in days there lately than weeks on winamp, which didn't used to be the case.

StillWater 26th September 2002 16:02

yeah, 1001 used to be worse for only one thing - downloads. It always had far better screenshots, more comments, less idiot public reviews, fairer exposure, instant updating, better organised browsing, etc. Now it seems to be better for downloads too.

StillWater 26th September 2002 19:29

OK. My turn to vote. As I wrote in the big introductory post to the earlier ORB contest thread, my vote will count for three votes - as both the organiser of the contest and the creator of the prize. So, my #1 choice will receive 9 points (3x3), my #2 will receive 6 points (2x3) and my #3 will receive 3 points (1x3).

It was hard to choose, the skins were to a large extent only a hair on a bee's dick apart in quality. But here we go:

#4 Chiquita Chad: Very good skin. I like what you've done
with the sporadic circles near the Eiffel tower, incorporating
them into the EQ/PL buttons, Khz, and Balance. I especially
like the EQ. As EQs go, this one's a minimalist treat - simple
yet interesting abstract shapes, with those very cool green
echoed green dots in them - with that mysterious factory
chimney in the background for full effect. Those green dots
are one of the most interesting parts of the skin - the way
they skip and jump unexpectedly - almost like the notes in a
piece of Orb music - as you move up the stacks or
across the cbuttons. Really cool touch. However, the skin
just looks a little rough around the edges for my tastes.
There's still half of the word "Orblivion" there - decapitated by
the EQ; the circle of buildings has been shrunk quite a bit and
is now a bit blurry, and is covered up by a number of things
and seems a little overcrowded. The buildings in the PL
stacks are really shrunk, and it's hard to tell what they are.
Lost minor points for not skinning the Mbinner. Still, this will
feature regularly on my winamp (and by the looks of it - on
many people's winamps) :)

#4 dimichan: Ironically, this is one of the more orderly
looking skins of the contest - even though it's the only one
that extensively used art from a wide variety of albums. It's
great how you've chosen elements from all over. I'm not even
sure if I know the covers that everything came from, but I can
see at least Orblivion, Pomme Fritz, Orbvs Terrarvm,
BadOrb.com, UFOrb, not to mention lots of little orbs for
buttons :-). Great idea for the volume bar - now that I see it,
that rising row of buildings was just asking to be made into a
volume bar. I'm quite fond of the shuf/rep as well. The factory
chimneys in the EQ also look pretty cool. Colouristically, I quite like it - The black and green thing you've got going on is cool, and the soft clouds in the main add atmosphere. Hmmm, the only bad thing I've got to say about it is that the words on the PL stacks are small and hard to read (sorry!). I guess the main reason you only placed fourth (after much undecidedness) was because, stylistically, the other skins slightly won me over. :)

#3 Not in Santiago: A skin that will be a pleasure to
use. It has a really great 'magical story-book' vibe to it. To
me, it feels like I'm looking at a story-book version of the
Baltic, under a starry sky, complete with magical flying
turtles and all, and that sublime EQ. As I said earlier, that EQ may
not have the best animation, but when still (which is what
matters most to a frequent winamp user after all), it looks
fantastic under practically any setting. I'm not usually a fan of
playlist stacks which require you to move the mouse to see
what each button does - but yours are labelled so clearly that
it almost doesn't matter (The extended turtle heads are cool by the way) - and that font looks quite good
throughout the whole skin. The floating pos bar is a great addition, and, as far as looking like it's always floating despite just being a rectangular posbar, it works surprisingly well. The whole circle thing you've got going on with the cbuttons isn't the most user-friendly cbutton package ever, but it's purty. Wonderful mbinner. :)

#2 Dekt: One hell of an elegant skin. One of those skins
which is a pleasure to use, because not only is the
functionality almost perfect, but it looks great. To paraphrase
a rather cynical Polish saying regarding translations of poetry
- "skins based on album covers are like women - either
faithful or beautiful." Well, your skin does pretty well on both
counts. On the one hand, it is extremely faithful to the album
cover art. It in fact looks like the album cover - renovated and
suped up to become a skin. BUT, rather than covered up
mercilessly by necessary components - they, in their own
quietly stylish way, make the album cover look like it was
always meant to be made into a skin. With some careful
mimicking of the pictures' colours, elegant, clean lines, and
some damn sexy cbuttons, you've made a skin that
simultaneously succeeds through the subtle-yet-deep
imagery of the clouds, and through the quiet stylishness of
the ultra-functionality of the components. :)

#1 e-raser: One of the best skins I've seen in a long time.
The skin has been very faithful to the design of the
Orblivion cover art, yet has got a very strong element of
your own creativity. I love how you haven't tried to squeeze as
much as possible into the skin, yet those Orblivion
elements which you have selected feature very prominently. The
whole geometric, dotted line flavour is brilliantly carried onto
the skin here, and often in a very interactive way - as many of
those elements form the clickable components.
I love how the skin - all the way down to the MB - has got a
totally consistent design. This is helped really well by the
several lines going through the entire skin. In most WA2 skins, the EQ is usually quite monotonous, and the PL is usually quite square - this has been cleverly avoided in both cases here. Here, every window forms part of one big, attractive whole. For me, you've hit the right balance between symmetry (eg. the way the buildings carry on throughout the whole skin; the way the cbuttons, PL stacks, and MB buttons all match; the way the on/auto buttons match with the preset buttons and the LIST stack) and anarchy (which gives your skin so much flavour). And both versions of the Volume animation are very classy (though I prefer the alternate one), as are the shuf/rep buttons. Also a wonderful mbinner - it sums up the skin nicely, not just with the title, but also aesthtically. It's also good that you skinned cursors and made a custom AVS preset, although the preset didn't give you any points in my vote because I don't think it really matches the skin or the theme. :)

So:

#1 e-raser (+9 points)
#2 dekt (+6 points)
#3 Not in Santiago (+3 points)

chiquita chad 26th September 2002 21:54

wow. last place rank by the creator of the contest.
that's a kick in the balls

dekt 26th September 2002 23:26

Chad: Don't be too down on yourself. db said 4th equal and was probably trying to explain his decisions and give hints on areas where you might improve. I know you might think "easy for you to say" but you got a lot of praise too. I personally think your skin has the most visual impact of the five.

db: Wow, thanks very much. I always hope when I'm designing something that people appreciate what I'm doing but I never really expect much feedback. It's really gratifying to get praise like that from someone I have a lot of respect for. At more than one point during the making of the skin I thought "why am I doing this?" and it was only really cos I'd made a commitment that I saw it through. The skin would never have been made if you hadn't started the whole thing, and wouldn't have been as good wthout your suggestions, so some of the credit goes to you too. :) "...and I'd just like to thank the Academy and my family and..." :D Nah, but if I actually won i might do the tearful Gwynie/Halle thing. Without the evening gown though! :)
