Encoding for the new

Howdy
Im interested what the best codec to encode my cds are.

Ive been using lame for 3 years and I know there has to be a updated codec out there.

mp3 is 7 years old or something.

so What is the best codec for size/quality.
Ive heard of Ogg mp3pro and other things.

Ogg.....Unless you have a portable that cant play them.

mp3pro, wma and vqf are crap formats... don't even think about them

ogg, musepack(mpc), mp3, aac
etc are all good lossy compression formats

Lame is the best mp3 encoder there is - download the latest CDex (link in sig) and you get a fairly new build of the encoder.

OGG is a better format than mp3, however it's not as well supported with regard to both software and hardware. If that's not a problem for you, then I'd use OGG instead.

The BEST place for information on all things encoding-related:

I'm in the process of going all out Ogg. I just transcode to 128kbps MP3 when I want to play some tracks in my CD player. It's no big deal, because it's just a portable device, and I mainly listen to it on the bus where there is a lot of ambient noise.

So the moral of the story is to use Ogg. If you transcode to MP3 afterwards, for the purpose of putting it on a portable device, you won't be missing much in the way of quality.

mp3 and ogg all the way! Especially if you have hard disk space to burn, then encode them at insanely high bitrates, or even rip the waves straight and leave them there! :D

"Yeah man... check it out. I've got two 120 gig hard drives packed with music!"

"Dude... Why do you only have 732 songs in your playlist?"

:D:D
