useless thread: sorry guys
Hello everybody. :)
I did not want to ask you guys for help because I tried to resolve to myself that I would do this, but alas, I am no good at writing theses. I have to do a thesis statement for my english class for an essay about 1984. I was hoping to do it about Totalitarianism/Big Brother, along with the downsides to the technology used in Orwell's 1984 England such as the Telescreen, as well as the negative effects of these two things on society. I have to be able to go on for about 6-8 pages. Please help me.....please? |
Hmmm... Sorry I cannot offer any help. It's been years since I read that book; but its a bloody good one though. It's a shame that it is banned from most schools. Is this in college that it's not banned? Probably... :igor: Good luck, bro. When's it due?

I'm reading this book now, I can't give you a thesis because i'm only halfway done it.
In canada we have things called Coles Notes that summarize famous books for students, in the states i think they're called Cliff's Notes. |
try pointing out the surrealities of the world (like the clocks striking 13) and the fact that the two nations have very similar names, indicating that they both might be much the same. also it might be an idea to mention that no reason is given for being at war, other than the fact that they are at war... is there a war at all? or is it just another manipulative tool?

Do you want an [English style] thesis, or a theme statement? It will help to know on what basis you will be analyzing the books.
|
Well, I'd get horribly slaughtered by my english teacher if I used Coles Notes.
Here's the thesis [formal essay thesis] that I've come up with: "In Orwell’s “1984,” society is negatively impacted by the Party’s totalitarian government, the reality of Big Brother, and the oppression of the individual." What do you think of it as a thesis? Can I go on for 6-8 pages? (Approx. 1200 words?) |
Well, it's a bit obvious. "Totalitarian" and "oppression of the individual" automatically give connotations of a negative impact on society.

[edit] removed lame counter argument [/edit]
but yeah, that's kind of a generic thesis for this book  what, it's banned places? what morons. |
Wow! My teacher gave me a really good thesis that got rid of that redundancy that your pointed out rm, as I did not notice that until you brought it to my attention. Thanks for the help! :D

"La Charca" very sad but it forced u to see the ugliness in life, granted i didnt get a huge moral lesson, but i DID get an apreshiation of my life now compared to what i would have endured back then " one of the lives in the book is about a girl, her mom gets married and allows her new husband ( or bf cant remember) to sleap with this 15 year old girl in payment " gratitud" for taiking them in" the girl falls in love with a man and alot of hell goes down but once they get together finaly, hes killed by his brother who was in a drunken rage.." alot of other stories play part in teh novel but its very dark and sad, still a good book |
with the advent of the internet, tv, and rap music, people read less. people are becoming stupid, and easier to control... :D
