Link instead of [img] tags?
We have sig guidelines so page loading times arent rediculous for us dialup users, so any chance of having a similar sort of rule for images in posts?
An image over 50k in file size, or over 120,000 pixels would probably be best as a link IMO. As once theres more than a few 50k+ images on a page, the loading time gets a little rediculous. Images that stretch the page would also be best as a link also. I know dialup users are probably a minority here, but it just gets a little frustrating when i click on a thread and it takes 5 minutes to load the page. I know its possible to disable images in the user control panel, but i dont have a problem when theyre of a reasonable size. Probably bashing my head against a wall here, but there must be at least a few people that agree. |
i have cable modem, but your request sounds perfectly reasonable. i'll second the motion.

I have a 10mbit line but I still agree. :)

:-/
i dunno, i guess it's alright to just have to link anything over the size.. i'll support it, but not avidly. |

I will vote for your movement. :) |

Yup, same here. Although I know what it's like to get stuck on a 56k (anyone remember when I was in that motel in Biloxi?). |
What would be ideal would be a VBB per-user option to automatically change pictures over a defined size to a link, so that everybody could be happy. Failing that, pictures should be under 800 pixels wide, and 50kb. Non-cable subscriptions still amount to roughly 80% of the US market.

That would have to use a lotta bandwith when you think about it. |

Nobody seems to follow that suggestion though. :( |
Yeah, it's true. I change images to links in the Winamp3 forums from time to time, but people there are generally more consious of image size, as many are graphics-oriented types to begin with ;). I use this as my general guideline for making a change:anything that pushes the normal width of the forums' tables' sides further out should be changed to a link, and the same dimension requirements for height....that is, if you turned the image 90 degrees, it would need to still fit in the table width. And some sane limit on filesize(if it's the least bit slow on my cable modem, and it's inside of the required dimension, it's too big).
[Edit]Of course, I do let things slide for various reasons. That's the nice thing about guidelines vs. rules[/Edit] -=Gonzotek=- |
I agree with you atmo.

I'm so screwed! {I'd show a picture of a screw, but :confused: }

Dont worry widdy, im not asking if [img] tags should be disabled altogether, just that people should perhaps take a quick look at the file size before they post them.
|
Oh , thank mew.....smoooch smoooch smoooooch. And that's Widdy!
hehehehehe..Hey I voted for ya!:D |
I'm guilty of posting a lot of images too. Sorry Atmo. I'll be a little more considerate (though I did post IMGs when I had dial-up as well).
For those who don't know, Atmo is so far out in the boonies, when he clicks on a thread with a large image, he has to wait for a kangaroo to knock on his door and deliver the page by hand. :p |
By hand? Pfft. Atmo has to fetch it out of the diplomatic pouch himself.
|
O.O
|
the worst is the large images that are put into someone's quote. there's no need for the same picture to appear twice in the same thread. it just wastes space.

But i'm sure this comment is completely unnecessary. |
Heh - I remember this and for dial-up users it's a right pain. It still is...I don't know if it should be made a rule as such. just more of a curtesy thing.
I remember suggesting it for the Desktop Month threads .. that seemed to happen for awhile but as I haven't been in them much lately I don't know now. Generally I'll just hit the back button unless it's summit I really want to see - like Mia's Piccy of the Day :) ~ :) |

If you haven't already done so, may I suggest many of the tweaks explained at Blackvipers website. Additionally, the TCP Optimizer from Speedguide.net has dramatically increased dataflow using the extreme settings with my own custom setting of 1027840 as the TCP Receive window. Of coarse, I don't connect using a virtual ISP. That in conjunction with using the Firefox browser with the relative extentions may also be a contributing factor. edit:/I do however agree with your original suggestion. |
My Control Pannel > Edit Options > Show image attachments and [img] code in Posts? > NO.
I am stuck on dial-up for a bit longer and I found loosing all images on the forums really helps. |
Maybe Craig could hack the vB again and change it so if you have it set not to show attachments and [img] code the it automatically puts it as a link?
|
nah.
