Cover Songs

What are your favorite cover songs?

A couple of mine, because they're silly:

Cake - I Will Survive

Revolting Cocks - Do Ya Think I'm Sexy

hestermofet 9th December 2002 08:47

Jim Carrey, of Jefferson Airplane's "Somebody to Love", from The Cable Guy.

"El Tango De Roxanne" version of The Police's "Roxanne", from Moulin Rouge.

I'm sure there are others

randman 9th December 2002 08:52

"Jingle Bells" by the Barking Dogs. :blah:

Actually STP did an excellent live cover of the Beatles - "Revolution" at that "Lennon/New York City" tribute concert.

weedsatan 9th December 2002 08:54

Not a big Marilyn Manson fan anymore but.. Sweet Dreams is still one hell of a cover.

Sandman2012 9th December 2002 09:04

I just remembered a few doozies. The cooks at my job listen to Mexican radio stations in the kitchen, and sometimes there are traditional Mexican arrangements of modern pop music. The top three were covers of Cyndi Lauper's "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun," "Heart Of Glass" by Blondie, and the theme to the old Spider-Man cartoon (Spider-man, Spider-man, does whatever a spider can...). All of these had accordian and tuba as part of the instrumentation. "Hear Of Glass" was sung by a man. :blah:

Widdykats 9th December 2002 12:56

The Flyin' Lizards: Money {it does me}

binary hero 9th December 2002 13:02

lol, sandman, you're cool

Merlin 9th December 2002 14:29

It's been mentioned here recently; Guns N' Roses cover of Live and Let Die. They actually made the song good.

Also, Quiet Riot's cover of Slade's Cum On Feel The Noize (which was mediocre) was an improvement. The QR version made it onto the GTA: Vice City soundtrack

John M 9th December 2002 14:41

smells like teen spirit by tori amos

Atmo 9th December 2002 14:44

Renegades of funk by Rage against the machine.

You are right Merlin, they made the song good, and it also is one of my favourite cover songs.

Hell yes. I love the extreme dynamics in there.

Now I can't believe no one has mentioned ASTRONOMY! Metallica's cover of that was 100000000x better than BÖC's original. I love the part right before the end when Lars does the pounding bass drum and then the finale. That has gotta be the definition of a cover song. Metallica sure knows how to rock. Although I hate the personality of the band. Especially you-know-who. The little drummer boy. Yeah you know who I'm talking about.

VH's cover of You Really Got Me is a big improvement. Tool's Zeppelin cover of No Quarter is great too. I like STP's cover of Dancing Days, as well as Revolution.

Cake - I Will Survive and most of Reel Big Fish's covers

meaisl8again 9th December 2002 20:55

I thought that Travis did a good version of hit me baby one more time. And I also heard this version of Gin and Juice today, that sounded good and was acoustic and probably sung by white guys. I wish I knew who sung it. Will post again if I can find it. :)

Lots of love,
Mea

patroclus22 9th December 2002 20:58

Probably done by the Gourds :) It's commonly referred to on Kazaa to be either by Phish or the Barenaked Ladies but neither my phish guidebook nor the BNL discography acknowledge their having made the song. Besides, I read on SA that the Gourds wrote it.

=)

meaisl8again 9th December 2002 21:12

fish, you are now a demi-god in my book. :D

Lots of love,
Mea

dylman 9th December 2002 21:32

Jeff Buckley's cover of Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah".

Manic Street Preachers - Suicide is Painless (Theme from M*A*S*H)

Any version of "Hey Joe" that you care to name, but especially Jimi Hendrix' version. And Nick Cave's version.

Oasis' version of The Who's My Generation. Probably Liam's best vocal performance, but loses points for being too close to the original.

I'm sure there are more...

QHOBBES 9th December 2002 21:45

Pinhead Gunpowder - Big Yellow Taxi
Me First and the Gimmie Gimmies - One Tin Soldier
RBF - Boss DJ
Ghoti Hook - Walkin On Sunshine
No Doubt - Ob La Di, Ob La Da
Toy Dolls - Livin La Vida Loca
Sublime - No Woman No Cry
NFG - Back That Ass Up
Goldfinger - Just Like Heaven
Aquabats - Knowledge
A+ - Beat It
Run D.M.C. - Walk This Way

EGAD :D Seriously, this one, as well as Tainted Love were TRULY awful covers.

Some of my favourites

Faye Wong - Cold War (Tori Amos)
Placebo - Johnny and Mary (Robert Palmer)
Placebo - Bigmouth Strikes Again (The Smiths)

james 10th December 2002 15:09

Van Morrison's Brown Eyed Girl, covered by Everclear ^_^

fwgx 10th December 2002 15:37

I once heard a track on a guitar magazine cover CD that was a rendition of Eruption by VH that was better and more powerful than the original! Also...

Sunday Bloody Sunday done by the Smashing Pumpkins live.
Hound dog - Hendrix
Stand Inside Your Love - Hendrix
Knocking on Heavens Door - GnR
Mrs Robinson - Nirvana
Marigold - Dave Grohl (Yes I know he wrote it but it was written by Nirvana :p)
My Way - Sex Pistols
[others go here]

Huehuetenango 10th December 2002 15:45

gob's version of Paint It Black was damn good
and who can forget any of weird al yancovik's covers?

Sparky! 10th December 2002 16:07

Willy Nelson's "Always on my mind" by The Pet Shop Boys

I gotta second John M's choice of "Smells like teen spirit" by Tori Amos. Hard to believe it's the same song that put Nirvana on the map!

Tori Amos also did a cover of Eminem's "'97 Bonnie & Clyde" that is just plain freaky.

I've always been a fan of Erasure's covers of ABBA hits like "Gimme Gimme Gimme", "Take a chance on me", "Voulez-vous", "SOS" and others.

Cylob 18th July 2003 16:31

The 'excellent cover versions' thread.

I can't believe there wasn't a thread for cover-versions. What are your favourites:

Fidget - Living on Video (orig Trans X)
Nathalie DeBorah - Living on Video (orig Trans X)
Curve - Overground (orig Siouxsie & the Banshees)
Carter USM - Rent (orig Pet Shop Boys)
Pet Shop Boys - Always on My Mind (can't even remember the orig)!
Carter USM - Panic (orig The Smiths)
Carter USM - Hit (orig The Sugarcubes)
Curve - I Feel Love (orig Donna Summer)
The Cure - World in My Eyes (orig Depeche Mode)
(cheers to Twilightseer for the above).

I've got loads but strangely I can't think of any more (the hot sweaty days in the office do take their toll).

There was, you just didn't search :D

Anyhow, thanks for reminding me, meant to drag this thread over when music o rama was re-openend.

Merged your new thread into this one :)

Carry on.

ShyShy 18th July 2003 17:40

Mr. Jones, you rock. i was about to do this too.

i have to agree with Cylob on PetShopBoys and The Cure, both really good. also, there's an above post on Marilyn Manson's Sweet Dreams, excellent. if you can, check out the soundtrack to Not Another Teen Movie, all covers from New Wave 80's. some suck, but there are ones that are good.

Cylob 18th July 2003 17:42

Sure, I searched the music o rama thread (being a newbie I didn't realise there was a pangea and later continents)!!! Anyway cheers, there's a veritable treasure trove here.

Cylob 18th July 2003 17:47

Cheers ShyShy - Not Another Teen Movie you say (note pad). I don't know who the biggest loser is (in the 'pre-occupation with music' stakes). You or me?
