what is your chosen bitrate?

since everyone has winamp, that would also mean they've got mp3s. so what my question is, what's everyone's minimum bitrate when downloading a song? personally, 192k is my standard, unless all else fails. the distortion on 128k is just too much for me...

deathazre 12th January 2003 19:01

the best I can find that will download.

As for encoding, VBR pwns j00

zootm 12th January 2003 19:02

i use ogg vorbis, so whatever bitrate it decides is good for that piece of music...

self biased 12th January 2003 19:12

never heard of either. for encoding/ripping/archiving i use a program called "zlurp." it works pretty good.

ElChevelle 12th January 2003 19:15

Pfft, for what I listen on, 128 is aplenty!
Besides, I need all my gigs for other multiple meg files;)

zootm 12th January 2003 19:16

you should check out CDex, it's a pretty good ripper.

VBR is Variable BitRate - it means that the encoder encodes the bits which are easy to encode at a lower bitrate, and the bits that may distort at a higher one. it's not been *perfectly* implemented in mp3.

Ogg Vorbis is an alternative file format to mp3 (website). it's fully VBR, and free of any patents. it's also just beginning to really take off...

C-DEX  And I got it from advice here so a double  as far as me is cocerened. I don't use less than 192kpbs. If it don't accept then neither do I. Will just go buy it so I can get 300+. As I DJ I need top quality. No good a track distorting or skipping bbecause of poor bit rate.for the normal user 128kpbs is acceptable and I used it for awhile but as said didn't suit my particular needs.

BTW Hello And welcome to the Forums :):winamp:

PsssSSSSSsssttttt!! Watch out for Bilbo!! 'K'K'K I'll shut up :D :D......:p:D ..........

<edit> ok I know I read this one first is all ,so get's a double welcome then :D :D ....well I think it's good :p :D :D

fwgx 12th January 2003 19:44

I rip to ogg vorbis -q=7.

GoldenSphynx 12th January 2003 20:00

Sb, I doubt that you can tell whether an mp3 is 128k, 160k, or 192k. Bleh to you if you still think you can.

Smeggle, what is with all the spaces?(and smilie misusage i might add as well:p)

fwgx 12th January 2003 20:05

There is a definate differance, to my ears, between 128 and 160 and 192. When I encoded to MP3's I ended up doing them at 224, now ogg's quality settings rule the day at 7.

Namelessv1 12th January 2003 20:08

192 is usually my standard.

self biased 12th January 2003 20:25

i most certainly can, sir. i can also tell if something was originally recorded to 2" tape or to something digital. the high end on anything 128 goes right to crap. at 192 it's not nearly as noticeable.

c2R 12th January 2003 20:32

Definitely lame with an ABR of 192....

It's the best space/sound quality compromise there is.

self biased 12th January 2003 20:58

true enough. nice fanatic, BTW.

Bilbo Baggins 12th January 2003 21:02

I vary between 96kpbs for my MP3 phone, to 196kpbs for my MP3 player (20GB so i have some stuff to play with).

insomniac 12th January 2003 21:06

192 Kbps when I can get it, but nothing below 128 Kbps.

InvisableMan 12th January 2003 21:06

ogg ~8 and mp3 nothing > 256

Thankyou. It's been my avatar ever since we were first allowed them here :)

sgtfuzzbubble011 12th January 2003 22:17

For all of my self-encoded mp3s, I use 256 kbps CBR set to low-pass at 19.5 khz... Encoded with Lame, of course. :)

eleet-2k2 12th January 2003 22:25

Minimum 160/192 KBps OGG vorbis. :) The higher the bitrate, the louder I can crank up the volume on my speakers with less distrotion and more ear piercing euphoria. ;)

self biased 12th January 2003 22:30

i'm ignorant on the different encodings... "lame" and "vorbis?" might as well be "strawberry" and "sex appeal" to my eyes...

Raas 12th January 2003 22:32

No less than 128 kbps.
Sometimes some songs sounds like a CD at 128 and sometimes
like crap.

deathazre 12th January 2003 22:33

I can hear a difference between 192 and 256 if I'm paying good attention to it.

lame makes mp3 files. it's probably the best encoder for doing it, too.
vorbis is a file format - it's an ogg file (.ogg as opposed to .mp3)... the encoding used is different, too.

NetFury 13th January 2003 05:04

192kbps and >

Kalervo Manni 13th January 2003 05:39

For ripping I use Exact Audio Copy and Ogg Vorbis encoder, at 128 kbit/s (ABR). It's better than 192 kbit/s (ABR) LAME encoded MP3 for my ears.

binary hero 13th January 2003 08:56

q4.9 ogg (i'm still holding on to old ideas, but it suits my needs)

Jay 13th January 2003 09:26

rip to 192 here

Twilightseer 13th January 2003 09:46

Used to use 256 Kbps CBR but decided it's overkill. 192 Kbps CBR is what I use now.

Illusion 13th January 2003 11:36

Used to do everything at 128, then lost 'em all in a hard drive crash, and now do them all at 192. Can't be bothered converting to OGG.

I already have to rip songs twice (once to the PC, again to the PC so I can transfer them to my phone which uses a propietary format for songs), and I have no problem with the quality of MP3s so I'll stick with them for the foreseeable future.

NetFury 13th January 2003 12:00

keep in mind, my post re: 192kbps or > (actually even USING mp3's) is for CASUAL listening only.

PJay Tycy 13th January 2003 12:18

source : Original CD only (no copies, because they might be created with mp3's themselves)
ripping : Exact Audio Copy (Secure mode)
encoding: Lame (--alt-preset standard)

=> I get VBR mp3's with an average bitrate between 160 and 220 (depends on the song).

When downloading: 192 CBR pre-releases or mp3's ripped and encoded exactly the same way as I do.
