Shoutcast In My Lounge
 

Ok, guys whats the best solution. I want to listen to streaming internet radio (Shoutcast and ideally other formats too) in my front room. Short of moving my noisy, ugly PC in their what is the best
solution?

Requirements:

1. plays streaming internet radio
2. near-silent when idle (not noticeable)
3. plugs into my Creek amplifier


Ideas are so far:

1. Shuttle PC (could be too noisy) which I could make into a PVR
2. Audiotron (but restricts me to two of the four formats listed above)
3. Some sort of Via low noise machine running windows/linux.

Well what would you experts do.... remember quiet operation....? And no turning up the volume on my PC wont do ;-)

There is a pretty cool gadgit I use to play mp3s on two other systems in my house. It's called an mp3 adapter. It plugs into your soundcard and plays your mp3s through your stereo. I got it for $25 and the sound is great.

i hope its not a 1/8" stereo to RCA adapter radio shack sells for $2.99. That's all i needed.

I've since switched to using the digital output of the SBlive 5.1 card into my dolby digital reciever. amazing sound quality. same $2.99 adapter too.

your best bet is an older machine that can do without a cpu fan. you would also want to swap the power supply fan out with a lower speed quiet fan. they make some that are almost silent. your next item is the hard drive. don't use one that thrashes about when you access stuff. my WD 40 gig is nearly silent. not all are as quiet...

How about running an optical/electrical cable through the wall and 20 feet to the other end of the room, would the signal survive ok?

Yes it's the same. Damn....Maybe I paid more because It came with a 25 ft. cable? Ahh it's too late now and the results were well worth the $$$$$$

It's not just that it also allows another jack to be plugged into the same connection.

There's always a little FM adaptor you can hook up to your computer and listen to on any (near by) radio.

Would that work?

it wouldn't work because i haven't got an FM receiver on my seperates system, i use digital cable for my wireless radio channels, but I'm interested in the idea of wireless transmission from the PC to a receiver. I've seen a device that'll work with MP3s however I need one that will work with streamed shoutcast.

Same device should work, shouldn't it?...just a winamp output....i'm guessing that device just plugs into your headphone-out jack then transmits FM.

Also, there's always setting up a wireless network if your want to connect your computers - that maybe a bit pricey if you don't have the wireless router/cards already.
