http://forums.winamp.com/images/icons/icon5.gif I am little bit confused as to what you are asking. Do you want to convert a media file to WAVe? Are you trying to record from microphone\line-in? Are you just having troubles playing music?

Hey folks, this looks like a classic confusion. This person needs to know about the playlist panel AND the sidecar panel in the Playlist Editor. Then he needs to ctearly understand about adding files amd directories (maybe with playlist editor buttons and from Windows). Next he has to understand about naming and adding playlists, then saving. Also, what happens to an open playlist if a new track is selected by double clicking in Windows. In short, basically how does Winamp work.
It's really not simple until you become familiar with Winamp basics. So, is there a thread anywhere that addresses this basic tutorial need? I don't think the Nullsoft supplied overviews make the details very clear. Could be, I'm all wet. Anyone have any thoughts on this? |
snickerbar,
I see you haven't gotten much help yet. Are you still interested? If so, we need some clarification from you. Do you actually succeed in creating a playlist of tracks that you want to play? Do you see them in the right hand Playlist Editor panel? Are you comfortable that you know how to add the song info to Winamp? Is your problem that you don't know what to do to save this list, and create others? What do you mean by "you can frag songs"? The subject of your query is "Recording etc". What do yoy mean by this? Recording could mean that you want to burn CDs, but the details you supplied don't mention that. |

Ok i am starting from the beginning. I guess I was unclear on what info i needed. First i would like to know if it is possible to record music in winamp? The sec thing i would like to know is how to use winamp's playlist? i know that u can click and drag items to listen to music. how do u make the playlist and it stay in winamp whenever i close winamp all the info that i thought i put in is gone. i have winamp 3 and i have the other winamp i never use the other one i like the winamp 3 and i would like to use if for all my music needs. so what i would like to do is transfer all my music to winamp that way i can use musicmatch for burning cds only not to store my music. there is not a site that u can go to and it tell u step by step how to use the winamp3? i sit here and try for hours and then when i think i have it it is gone so please help me and i appreciate all the feedback please keep sending and i will answer.

Yes snickerbar, it is confusing and frustrating. But, you'll find it easy and powerful once you get to understand the details.
Winamp is not a CD burner program. So, let's just talk about creating and saving your playlists. You said you know how to click and drag from Windows to add to a playlist. That's good. You should also be aware that you can use the Add button at the bottom of the Playlist Editor to add either files or an entire directory to either a blank playlist, or one that is already started. It's not a good idea to double click on a song file in Windows. This will place the selected song in the Playlist Editor, BUT it will delete whatever the playlist is currently displaying. Now, to managing the playlists. First, the Playlist Editor can display two panels. The leftmost panel contains the playlist. The rightmost panel (called the sidecar), can be used for several things. But let's just stick with playlists. The sidecar can be opened or closed (toggled) by clicking anywhere on the long vertical bar. If you see the sidecar, click on the bar separating it from the playlist panel. The sidecar will disappear, and that vertical bar moves way to the right. With the sidecar open, click on the rectangular button at the top, and make sure that "Loaded Playlists" is selected. You should then see at least one entry below it - should say Playlist 001. Now go ahead and add songs to create a playlist that you want. Next, RIGHT click on the words Playlist 001 in the sidecar, and select "Rename" from the popup window. Go ahead and type in the name you would like for this particular playlist, and hit "Enter". Next, click on the "Playlist" button under the sidecar. Select "Save playlist as" from the popup list. The highlighted file type should be "b4s playlist". Give it the name of your choice and click "save". If the folder that opens is not "Winamp", you should navigate to it, and place your saves there. The result of this will be that the playlist will be associated with the "Playlist name" you set up in the sidecar. IMPORTANT: You can open this playlist (if it's not already open) by just clicking on the sidecar name - and add or delete songs - BUT BE SURE TO SAVE IT AGAIN. Once the playlist is created and initially saved, you can save it again via the "Playlist" button, then "Save Playlists". If you should ever accidentally clear the list of songs in the Playlist Editor, just click on the "Playlist Name" (to highlight it) in the sidecar, then via the "Playlist" button, and "Load Playlist". Select the proper b4s file from the Open Files Window. To create another playlist, do this: - Check to see if you have a Playlist 001 entry in the sidecar. - If not, click the "Playlist" button, and "Create new playist" - If you want to start a new list from scratch, click on the "DEL" button at the bottom, and "Delete all items" - Add the songs you want (they can include songs from other playlists). - Right click on "Playlist 001", rename (and Enter) and save as. And so forth. Just click on any of the playlist names you've created to open its associated song list. Give this a try. If you need more help, just holler. Good luck! |
Some additional thoughts
Read my prior post first!
It's important to be clear on the components in this process; 1. The song files themselves - stored as mp3 files on your hard disk. 2. The playlist that is displayed in Winamp. This is just a listing of the references that Winamp has made to where the mp3 files are stored. That's why it's important not to move the mp3 files in the hard disk after the Winamp Playlists are created. If the mp3 files are moved, Winamp won't know where they are. 3. The saved Playlists - the b4s files. Each of these files contains the information that Winamp requires to redisplay the Playlist in the Playlist Editor. Once a b4s file is created, the associated display in Winamp can be deleted, and then re-established by opening the b4s file. So, first, you needn't worry if you accidentally erase the Winamp display of a Playlist. You simply highlight the Playlist name in the sidecar, and "Load Playlist" via the "Playlist button. You could even associate the same Playlist with a different Playlist name. Just "Create new playlist", be sure it's highlighted, right click to change the name and "Load Playlist". You could this capability to adjust an existing playlist if you wanted a new one with most of the original songs, but with certain additions and deletions. If you decide that you wish to delete a Playlist from Winamp, highlight its name in the sidecar, and under the "Playlist" button click "Unload playlist". This will remove its appearnce in Winamp, but the b4s file remains. So, to completely delete a Windows Explorer delete of the b4s file is also required. Guess that should be enough for now. When you get all that absorbed, get back to us abd let us know how you're getting along. |
