Need some help. Please?

Okay, installed the two different versions of Winamp and the DSP (v. 1.8.2b and Oddcastv2 for Winamp3) and Oddcast can't connect to my server, and 1.8.2b will only play through my soundcard. I'll break this down further, but I'm a journalist, so the 5 W's go in the first paragraph...:)

V 1.8.2b: It creates sound and people can connect, however, the sounds they are hearing are from my microphone picking up whatever is going on in the room. I have tried un-plugging it, but then it's just dead air. When I go into the input config, it says that the input should be Winamp. The only problem, is when the input is Winamp, there is nothing. No output to the server at all, and no levels on my SHOUTcast interface. Found that peculiar.

So I thought I'd try OddcastV2 for Winamp3...

After configuring it as close as I could to what I figured things were supposed to be, when I click "Connect" I get the error "Failed Initializing Encoder. Make sure you have Lam" then it gets cut off by the screen. I have my encoder set to lame, output and input set to 22050 Mhz, and now I'm totally confused.

Yes, I've read the 15 steps to seting up SHOUTcast, and the "So you wanna set up an internet radio stations" but neither one of them cover either of the above problems.

Help would be greatly appreciated. Fester, do you have a bot for this? :)

FesterHead 2nd April 2003 20:43

No bot, sorry. You get real tech support (you judge whether or not one of us is sorry after :)).

Using the Winamp/DSP combo:
1. Select Winamp as the input device on the Input tab.
2. Select an encoder, encoder type, and encoder setting from the Encoder tab
3. On the Output tab, press the Connection button and select your encoder from #2 and fill in the DNAS information.

(If the Winamp/DSP combo is on the same machine, use "localhost" or "127.0.0.1" (without the quotes) for the address, use the DNAS defined password and the DNAS defined portBase for their respective inputs).

4. Press the Yellowpages button and enter values.
5. Press connect (make sure DNAS is on first, eh :))

My microphone expereience is limited to FAQ pointing (mic bot). Most likely the problem is your mixer configuration.
Check out the Sticky post titled:
SHOUTcast: Important Info & Answers to FAQs. READ ME!

Scroll down a bit and look for the section titled:
DSP Issues -> Using the Microphone with Music

Thanks for supplying a lot of information. It helps.

BTW: How does yor DNAS log look? Got "yp added me" and "yp touched" messages in there?

GENESIS 2nd April 2003 21:01

The event log looks fine to me (though anything would look fine to me unless is in big flashing red letters saying "ERROR! ERROR! ERROR!"...

Okay, went through your steps, and still the SC Source screen is saying "Nothing Yet" when it comes to the input screen. And I have no levels.

You brought up mixer settings. What theorhetically is winamp going to be listed under? Right now, all of my sliders are maxed and nothing is muted. Hrmmmmm...Interesting...

I also have just gone into my Winamp>Options>Input and Output and while there are some plugins in there, none of them say SHOUTcast or anything of the sort. The only place it's listed is in the DSP/Effect category.

It's up and running right now at http://timmah.no-ip.com:8000/listen.pls if you wanna tell me that it's working (though I'm sure it's not)...:)

FesterHead 2nd April 2003 21:06

What happens when you press connect?

What values did you use for the Address and Port?

Do you have tunes loaded and playing in Winamp?

http://timmah.no-ip.com:8000 -> your DNAS :up:

GENESIS 2nd April 2003 21:16

Here are my settings:

Output Tab:
Address: localhost
Port: 8000
Password: Matches what's in config. file
Encoder: 2 (matches the input encoder, just trying something different)
(Under Yellow Pages)
Check next to make it public
Description: Survivor Trivia
URL: http://timmah.no-ip.com:8000
Genre: Trivia

Encoder Tab:
Encoder 2 (highlighted)
Encoder Type: MP3 Encoder
Encoder Settings: 24 kbps, 22050 Khz, mono

Input Tab:
Input Device: Winamp (recommended <--- HA!)

I don't have to hit connect at all. It's doing it automatically when I open up Winamp.

I'm looking for anything that just jumps out at me and says, "CHANGE ME SO IT WILL WORK RIGHT!", but there's nothing that looks out of place...

GENESIS 2nd April 2003 21:31

Ha! I've stumped Festerhead. :)

FesterHead 2nd April 2003 21:41

Pbpbpbbpbpbpb. :p

Are you able to play and listen to mp3s in Winamp?

Regardless of whether you're connected to the DNAS or not, you should have active vu meters in the DSP while Winamp is playig tunes.

PM me your DNAS password and I'll see if I can source it.

GENESIS 2nd April 2003 21:47

Yes, I'm currently listening to Barenaked Ladies...*sigh*

I have no active vu meters in my DSP right now, and it's getting on my nerves...:) Real Producer is looking pretty good right about now...;)

S: PM me your DNAS password and I'll see if I can source it.
R: Done

FesterHead 2nd April 2003 22:06

I was able to connect to your DNAS, so that's not the problem.

It's a long shot, but try un-installing Winamp2 (you're using 2, right?) and re-installing it.

At this point, I'm flummoxed. Anybody else have a clue?

GENESIS 2nd April 2003 22:07

Okay, so we've figured out that it's not my shoutcast server, but my DSP isn't connecting properly? Or is it that Winamp isn't connecting with my DSP?

Tom 2nd April 2003 22:08

What format are the files you are playing in Winamp (i.e. mp3, CDs, wma, etc.)?
What is selected in your Recording Mixer (hint it is your microphone switch it to "Stereo Mixer"/"What U Hear"/something along those lines, the exact name varies by soundcard)?

Tom

FesterHead 2nd April 2003 22:09

Your Winamp/DSP combo is connecting, but it isn't sending the source.

Does your Winamp spectrum analyzer have activity when you play mp3s?

GENESIS 2nd April 2003 22:13

I'm playing wma's...Okay, went into my Sound Props (dbl. clicked my speaker) went to Options>Properties>Recording (radio button) and unselected everything but Stereo Mix. So, on my recording, the only level I get to play with is Stereo Mix.

I have now connected to my Shoutcast server, and still nothing. no levels, no info going out. Gonna try uninstalling and re-installing...That was actually going to be my next move...:)

Tom 2nd April 2003 22:17

If you set it to Soundcard Input it should work now. The problem is that wmas do not get passed on to DSPs. If you want to broadcast wmas with Winamp Input selected see: http://forums.winamp.com/showthread.php?threadid=73372

Tom

GENESIS 2nd April 2003 22:24

Tom...good call on the WMA's...I'm going to convert them over to MP3's and try this again...

If you guys get paid for this, it's not enough. If you're not getting paid, you should be...And a bunch...

FesterHead 2nd April 2003 22:26

All I have to say at this point is:
Doh!

GENESIS 2nd April 2003 22:45

Festerhead....Try it now... http://timmah.no-ip.com:8000/listen.pls

FesterHead 2nd April 2003 22:48

24kbps 22kHz mono stream sounds excellent.

I experienced no buffering nor clipping.

GENESIS 2nd April 2003 23:02

Sweet..Thanks for your time and efforts...They are definitely appreciated...Now, once I get my FM tuner setup, we go to phase 2 (which I would discuss here, but that might be frowned upon by certain federal agencies)...:)

FesterHead 2nd April 2003 23:19

I use a Ramsey Electronics FM100B

GENESIS 2nd April 2003 23:23

I won't be transmitting, I'll just be webcasting it...Picking it out of the air and serving it up on the net...Our station did webcast until the feds came down with their fees and paperwork BS last summer...

Now, it's time for the World's Largest Trivia Contest to take place (April 11, 12 and 13) here in Stevens Point, WI, and there were a lot of players around the country that weren't going to be able to listen, now they're going to be able to...:)
