Changing An mp3 type: file to a winamp media file
Hi again guyz!! You's helped me out so much i decided to put another message in here. You's are my heroes!! In my mp3 music folder i have over 2000 mp3's. I have looked at the properties for most of them and they say for eg. the properties for john cougar play guitar is listed "type: winamp media file." But there a few in there when i click on the properties for them it comes up "type: file." And when i double click it to play it it opens up an 'open with folder.' When I click on winamp and tick the box that says "always use this program to open this type of file" it doesn't seem to remember it the next time i go to play it. The icon beside the few mp3's i am talking about is different to the other mp3's icons. I was wondering if any of you's genius's can help me change the type: in properties to "type: winamp media file." This way all my mp3's will automatically open up and play in WINAMP. I appreciate any assistance. Thanking you's all again. :)

Hi again.
More than likely, those files do not have a file extension. To prove this, go to: Windows Folder Options -> View tab Uncheck: hide extensions for known file types (Note: If you don't know where Folder Options are, I can't give you precise instructions without knowing what version of Windows you are running) Now take a look in your mp3 folder. You will see that all files with the description: Winamp Media File have got .mp3 at the end of the filename. But the ones with the description "File" do not. First, if there is no file extension (eg. .mp3, .wma, .wav, .mid, etc) try right clicking the file and selecting "rename". Manually type in .mp3 at the end (note: the fullstop/period is important here) Now double click, (or drag this file into Winamp's playlist) Hit Alt+3 (or right-click -> File Info) This should bring up the MPEG Info box / Tag Editor Under "MPEG Info", does it say the format is "MPEG 1.0 Layer 3"? If yes, then this is proof that it's an mp3 file. If it says something else, or the file refuses to play, report back here with the details and/or any error messages, and we'll take things from there. |
Hi DJ Egg!! OH MY GOODNESS!! I have had such a huge win today. I was following your directions, ( I have windows 98) and got up to renaming the few files i had that weren't opening up with winamp automatically. All i did was put the .mp3 at the end of those that didn't have .mp3 at the end of them, and what do you know..........they automatically open now with winamp!! I'm Stoked! Thanks again DJ Egg!!!! Your SOOOOOOOOOOOOO clever!!! Thanx heaps n heaps for your help. I hope you have a really nice day. Cheers :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) "hehe smiles all round"
