Newbie Question re:SHOUTcast Server

I run my own webserver from my basement and I would like to experiment with a SHOUTcast Server to broadcast music.

I cannot seem to find
(a) minimum requirements for the server to run on Win or Linux platform, and I would appreciate
(b) clarification on the FAQ statement:

"Answer: Nullsoft/AOL don't presently provide free bandwidth or servers to broadcast
from. You need to talk to your ISP or someone with a big fat internet connection
and convince them to run the server for you so you can broadcast from it."

..I know (b) is part of (a) but what specific bandwidth do I need to support a webcast of say 50 listeners? Do I need a T1 line?!

TIA!

Yes...you will need a lot of bandwidth. It all depends on what bitrate you want to broadcast at for how much bandwidth you will require.

From the DNAS readme.txt file:
code:
Requirements:

If you want to broadcast to listeners, you'll need:

* 90Mhz or faster server, running one of Windows 95, 98, NT, 2000, ME,
Mac OS X, Sparc Solaris 2.7+, FreeBSD 4.x+, or Linux with a libc6 kernel.

* 14kB of memory for every listener you want to broadcast to (i.e. 1,000
listeners means you need 14 Megabytes of RAM), plus whatever your
operating system needs for overhead, plus 1.5MB for the server's
base requirements. Don't set the listener count higher than you need,
it just screws things up.

* Enough bandwidth to run the server. If you want to broadcast to 100
listeners at 24kbps, you'll need about 24kbps*100 = 2,400kbps = 2.4Mbps
of bandwidth. That's about 2 T1 lines worth of bandwidth. Trying to
push 100 128kbps listeners down your 768kbps cable modem isn't going
to work :)

Also, Check out the Sticky post titled:
SHOUTcast: Important Info & Answers to FAQs. READ ME!

Scroll down a bit and look for the section titled:
1. DNAS Stuff -> Bandwidth -> DSLReports Bandwidth tester(Only be concerned with the UPLOAD bandwidth)
2. DNAS Stuff -> Bandwidth -> CasterClub's Listener Calculator
3. DNAS Stuff -> Bandwidth -> CasterClub's Bandwidth Calculator

Use 1 to find your upload.
Use 2 to determine the number of listeners you can support at your selected streaming bitrate.

Jay (KXRM) also has a Bandwidth Calculator.

u will need allot of bandwidth

10 x 24k users = 240k/sec
20 x 24k users = 480k/sec
40 x 24k users = 960k/sec

etc etc

thats if ur broadcasting @ 24k

if u wanna broadcast at 128k

128k x 10 = 1280k/sec

THank you very much for your posts. They apparently contain the answers to my questions very precisely!
