Forum Idea: Quick Link Button

Ok, so Fickle and I were talking the other day via IM, and he kept refering me to posts in therads, but the only links we coudl get were the ones to his last post, or just to the thread, since we didn't have the post ID number. My idea would be place a button/link either next to the post time or next to the "edit" button, and what it would do is have a pop-up box with _that post's_ url. For example, this post would have <http://forums.winamp.com/showthread....98#post1025698> r it's url. idk, but I think it would be neat if possible. It would make talling peopel about certain posts easier. :)

iomegajaz 21st July 2003 12:35

Even though that didn't pass my "Was that English?" test, I know what you mean. I've wanted the same thing myself. Having a link/button might cause confusion, like "What's this for? I'm already here," etc.

idk. My $0.02.

OutlawJim 21st July 2003 12:43

that sounds like a cool idea, yeh.

Vie 21st July 2003 12:46

could be useful, not for moi mind...

MetallichicA 21st July 2003 12:46

I like it... I've always wondered how people find an exact post when they put a link in another thread. I still haven't figured that one out. Perhaps instead of a big link button like those at the bottom of the post, it could be an itty-bitty icon, the size of a smiley, or just a link right next to "report this post" and "ip: logged".

iomegajaz 21st July 2003 12:47

ps. If you hover over the "Report this post" links, it'll show you the post ID. You can then paste that into the URL you've grabbed from the "Last Post" link.. voila. =)

It's a workaround, I know, but it's worked for me for the past couple of years. =D

MetallichicA 21st July 2003 12:52

Oh... well that's a pain in the arse, so we need a quick link button :p

Mr_007 21st July 2003 13:51

Good idea!

Joel 21st July 2003 15:50

I like it too...
That could avoid, in sometimes, the search engine

dlinkwit27 21st July 2003 21:54

I got the idea from the "quick quote" feature they have at hardwaregeeks

http://www.hardwaregeeks.com/board/s...&postid=145417

just click the "quick quote" box and the lil box comes up with the post in code so that you can quote easily using quick reply. I want it to say post ID/URL instead of quote th. :)

Fickle 22nd July 2003 04:56

neat-o. It would be a great help, Dlink.
Oh and Sawg, not to push your buttons or anything, but does later mean tomorrow or next year?

Viper007Bond 22nd July 2003 04:58

Would be somewhat helpful. I don't care either way.

Fickle 22nd July 2003 05:36

like WA 2.92 coming soon!
or WA 3.1 for that matter...

I attempted to make a button heh

MetallichicA 22nd July 2003 11:55

 I.... I.... THAT CAN HAPPEN? Since when did time become compressed? Yes, yes, that's the only explanation. There was this wrinkle, see, and I've actually gone FORWARD IN TIME to the point where something was done. All of us must have gotten sucked into a WORMHOLE, that's it. And so now it's 2 years down the road....

Brain... overloading....

;)
<3 Sawg!

I do prefer a link over a button though, there are just too many buttons on the page as it is. Not sure about anyone else's preference.

dlinkwit27 22nd July 2003 12:01

w00t!

/me nutsacks Sawg :D:D:D

GoldenSphynx 22nd July 2003 14:04

That got taken care of rather quickly. Forum hug for Sawg! :)

dlinkwit27 22nd July 2003 21:48

here is another idea that the dialup users might like. why not get rid of the "profile" button and have it so that you can just click the persons name or avatar to see their profile? I think name would work best jsut cause not everyone has an avatar though. Just a thought. I know it is a small image, but still, coudl help a lil. :D

Smeggle 22nd July 2003 22:07

Wow thats cool :) nice idea dlink and cool work sawg :D

dlinkwit27 23rd July 2003 03:13

i wish it was my idea, but i've seen both things done on other boards, and i've foudn them useful (liek teh member map) so I thought i'd share. :D

Falcon4 23rd July 2003 07:32

I dunno if it's my computer or the server (probably my comp), but for some reason *every* image seems to be loading from scratch. I've got the cache settings set up right (IE 6)... also, in the same sense, some images don't load at all - randomly, but most commonly the blank image at the very top of the screen... [X]... I just right click and say Show Image. Anyone else have this problem... just curious...?

And, oh yeah, the Quick Link button works great! Thanks Sawg, maybe you can help me with some PHP when I get my own BB running? Do you know a good one that can handle maybe 5 users on it at a time on a 233MHz P1 server? :)
Thanks!

But seriously, is 670 bytes too much. Especially the image should be cached. :D

But speaking of removing images, has anyone EVER use http://forums.winamp.com/images/buddy.gif? :)

I wasn't sure how hard that would be, and I didn't bother to see how large the image was, but your right, it gts cached, then its no ore of a problem.

and I've used the buddy button, but seeing it go wouldn't bring a tear to_my_ eye. :)

iomegajaz 25th July 2003 15:19

Oh, you mean to say that the thing that Sawg just said has been inititiated is actually working, and has been initiated, and stuff? Cool, thanks for the heads up. =P

If I want to make a buddy, I'll go through thier profile. To be honest, I forgot the button was there.

that is wrong. I just updated my time with XP's thing (time.nist.gov) and it says 12:23. Not that it really bugs me, just thought I'd ponit it out. :)

Fickle 25th July 2003 17:19

yeah, you are wrong. It's 1:25pm!

DJHotIce 26th July 2003 02:43

Yea on the Shoutcast stats page, I allways get em like 10 mins later and I'm hooked up to an atomic clock as well! I'd like to see the shoutcast clock fixed as well! Sorry just saying :D

Sweet, like the new link.

I hadn't even realized that there was a buddy button. Wow, I've been here nearly 7 months and didn't notice it. Weird.

insomniac 26th July 2003 22:19

Even though you it wasn't your idea, thanks for mentioning this dlink. I've been wanting something like this for a long time. :)

dlinkwit27 27th July 2003 00:11

Ok, since the forums are able to change certain words to *'s, would it be possible to have a sort of auto spelling thing? I am thinking _u_ (_ = space) could be automatically turned to "you" "teh" to "the" and other common things like that could automatically be fixed to saev everyoen the headache of people using 'chatroom speak'.

DJHotIce 27th July 2003 00:42

yea, I know a word filter would do the trick, same thing as in a bad word block, where you input before and after words, think that would work great :D is pretty simple too!

WHCode RED 27th July 2003 02:38

hmm... what happens when you click that quick link aagin? doesnt do anything for me....

its not meant to be clicked, but you an use "copy shortcut" to help tell what post it is. It works best with IM convo's or in post refrences (ie, better than saying, go to this thread, second page, 14th post down. the one by dlink.)

anubis2003 27th July 2003 04:30

Or you can just click it and then copy the url in your address bar up top.
