personally I don't think file sharing communities are precious, they're not really even communities IMO.

The only "community" aspect of any file sharing network I've encountered is when someone sends me a message to say..

"do you have barely legal vol 6"

or something similar

I don't think RIAA will be able to truly accomplish anything. Even if they destroy the internet you can still go down the Record store and rent a cd and rip it and give it back.

I haven't spent money on a cd in about 6 years.

RIAA can't do anything, there are way too many ways to get free music than the ones most people know about and if the RIAA actually do get their way and get P2P banned I'll make it my personal mission to let everyone know just all the ways I know of getting things for free

you guys are forgetting the importance of big money and special interest groups in politics these days. sad to say, but most of the time the money makes the laws, not the majority.

But to get a law working the majority needs to follow it. If ppl don't they can't do anything about it. You can't let over 50% ov the population go to prison for 4 years. That would cost even more money than RIAA have.

I know it's not 50%, but think 'war on drugs'. because of the mandatory, incredibly long sentences for a nonviolent crime like smoking marijuana, prisons have become incredibly overcrowded and it is costing the taxpayers billions.

I would recommend gathering 20 or so friends, everyone pitching in for an ftp server, then everyone rips thier cd's and whatever they have downloaded onto it.

Private networks will be the future of filesharing if the RIAA gets it's way with p2p.

Well, I for one think there are way too many trojans, viruses, and accidentially open windows \\shares out there that can make backdoors in any given person's internet connection, through which any amount of data could be transferred.

If you ever got a letter, the best and brightest response would be to simply say "I didn't do anything" and then act like you have no idea what anyone's talking about. If it ever came down to it, the best defense in light of the hundreds of microsoft screwups, is, in fact, microsoft and some unknown attacker. The burden of proof is on RIAA, not you. And after all, you "agree" with RIAA. Music file sharing is an abomination. It simply seems that both you and RIAA are the innocent victims of HTTP/proxy tunneling.

Case closed. The jury's verdict? Innocent. Plus, you have the inescapeable fallback of your antivirus program "detecting" the "trojan" once you've updated the definitions. Pretty cool, eh? Now go back to peer to peer file sharing and quit being so paranoid.

Also, money wins over majoirty. Look at the 200 election, look at all of the bullshit going on in laws (making it so some buisness can not get sued for its own fuck-ups, in a bill about speeding tickets and the like (just made that one up, but I bet it has been done before, just in other ways))

I personally think that if you download/upload a bunch of music every month you deserved to be sued by the RIAA. Why can't people actually buy some music sometime. Too many people have come to just expect to get stuff for free nowadays. People need to go get a job and actually buy a CD and support the music. I also think these RIAA threads are getting old. There always seems to be one of these that pop up every couple days. I stopped supporting these stupid Anti-RIAA crap a long time ago. Of course I don't have to worry about this stupid RIAA shit anymore. iTunes all the way.

Since iTunes is mentioned I'm going to mention emusic. You won't be able to get a Cheese McBritney with a large fries from emusic but you'll find plenty of things to listen to at a much better price than iTunes.

People who use p2p to trade mainstream artists are still depending on the majors to tell them what's good. I use p2p for things too rare to find in hard copy or through legitimate downloads. If people on p2p left commercial artists alone the RIAA wouldn't be on our backs about it.

But the problem is, the RIAA is swinging a hatchet in the dark. To protect their copyrights, they're using methods that will make it much harder for average citizens to transmit information to one another. The RIAA's vision of the future makes the internet like television, where all content is determined by a boss at the top.

How about you buy your music :P

I wouldn't be aginst the RIAA if i did nto feel they were makinga terrible mistake. Sure alot of peopel download music and never buy a CD, but i'm willing to bet a LOT more actually buy more music because of it.

If its just one song i want, sure i'll download it and never buy the album. Are they losing anything? NO! If i could'nt download that one song, i'd just have to never listen to it. However, if i start downloadinga lot of songs and like the Band alot, i'll buy their album. Not because i feel guilty, but because i want it. And all of my friends are the same.

The other day, i was reading guitar world, and one of the writers mentions this band. Well i've never heard of them before. So, 6 months ago i would hop on kazaa, download it. If i liked it, i'd d/l more, if i liked htem all, i'd go buy it. But what do i do now? Well i finished reading that mag then shelved it, probably never to be read again. And that band, as far as i know, will never be heard by me...EVER.

Well that's a great point! I think exactly the same as you... But there's a "minor" difference, you see? I live in Portugal (in Western Europe) a *FREE* country, where there isn't that RIAA sh*t, or censorship, or that f*cked up political system of yours... No one will actually sue me for having downloaded more than 1000 mp3 from Kazaa... Things are much easier around here...
Instead, I can find a lot of new (and old) stuff without being bothered... there are 3 bands (my favourite) which I wouldn't have ever come across with, if it wasn't for P2P... And now, I already own all of Gomez's albums, 5 out of 6 from dEUS, and 2 out of 5 from Radiohead!

If one guy buys a CD, and hates it, not only he won't probably buy more stuff from the same band (even though bands can change for the better or for the worse), he will also lose his confidence in the record market... He will think more than twice before buying anything. Actually, I do it too! That's why I d/l some songs from some album, or the whole lot; If I can't stop listening to it, then, it's time to buy the thing and "help the artists survive". Actually, artists aren't getting a fair cut from the profits anyway!!!
