ok this is my opinion, take it for waht it's worth.
avs do nothing. they don't enhance the sound, they don't make the mp3 any better, they don't provide a useful function for winamp and you can't interact with them like games. the only thing that they are good for is putting them up on a projection screen during a party. other than that they are a distraction and don't provide anything for the listener. when i first downloaded winamp i played around with them but that was only because i was bored as hell. and asking an honest question, why would nullsoft include this function in the first place? avs do not enhance one's listening experience.

Raz 18th August 2003 19:47

Does video enhance anyones video experience. No it doesn't. Whoops, there goes your argument.

WomanOfHeart 19th August 2003 00:16

Wait just a minute! I happen to like the avs! They're fun to play with, and fun to watch. I turn them on when I'm doing homework. Sometimes they provide just the visual break I need to get the creative juices flowing again.
Sometimes they're just relaxing. My nephew loves to sit in my lap and watch them. Occasionally, I'll just turn off the volume and use them for screensavers. So, as you see, avs do have their uses, at least for me.

AVS isn't discontinued.
All the post linked to above says is that there hasn't been any major updates for 2 years and that future development plans may be bleak, or words to that effect.

People will still continue making/submitting new AVS preset packs.

The AVS plugin will still be included in future Winamp releases,
hopefully with the possibility of Milkdrop being included in the default setup as well . . .

Fickle 19th August 2003 02:32

that's uplifting. heres to someone updating it and giving it away.

Raz 19th August 2003 02:50

Does video enhance the video experience?

Jesus, i need some sleep.

Does video enhance ones listening experience was my point.

Fickle 19th August 2003 03:36

I think it would be neat if I could code well enough to make avs better or something. but I don't even know how to do anything like that.

Yeah peopel will. But some of the most creative AVS Artists already announced their retirement, as there is really nothing left to do. We try to push it ourselves. There are some really neat Ape's out but AVS really lacks interfaces. There is no direct access to buffers and or internal var's.

There is a pretty huge official whishlist, which has'nt been updated for one year, so the unofficial whishlist should be twice as large.

And all Nullsoft came up with for AVS2.6 was Boolean Operators Bugfix and this sucking Skin support that makes it impossible to resize AVS as you like it because it always snaps to predefined sizes.

AVS is in fact one of those few things that makes Winamp superior to other players.

But somehow this is not realized, Neither by Nullsoft nor by F.AOL!

@raz
video doesn't enhance my listening experience. it enhances my "watching videos using winamp" experience :). if you are saying that winamp doesn't need video, do what i did with the avs, don't install the capability.
and before you call me out, i want winamp as my main media player, so that includes video. how does the avs improve winamp as a general media player (perhaps i should have said that earlier)? at least with the games, you are doing something but with the avs, it's just, well, there.

Magic.X 19th August 2003 06:18

Not really. It is one of the best CUSTOMIZEABLE Visualization plugs (imho). You can create your own Visuals while listening through music. Not just switching some checkboxes but writing entire scopes or movements with CODE. Its just as interactive and addictive as any game could be. Visuals make Music more enjoyable.

AVS was an old, slow and cumbersome beast long overdue for a few lead pellets in the brain.

Milkdrop and most of Giess's plugins are the true rulers, all others are just imitations.

Raz 19th August 2003 13:34

Yes but milkdrop lacks so much customisability AVS has.

Katz person: Well the player enhances your listening experience, the video enhancs your video watching experience and AVS enhances my visualisation experience with it's sheer magnitude of different presets and customisability. The possibilities would be endless if it were not for the slowness, but the main way to speed things up would... *sigh* i genuinely can't be bothered with another avs vs milkdrop debate. Go search the avs/milkdrop forums for one.

ctkatz8086 19th August 2003 16:34

i have no problem with others enjoying avs. i just don't get it. please, go ahead and enjoy your avs. don't bother the idiot hammering away at the keyboard. :)

laz 21st August 2003 04:41

that is sad, but seeing I have not used it in some time, well since I last used WA2, way back late '01. I dont feel too bad. Also it is just too damn slow, I had good hardware, and what to I get, 14fps at a small resolution. I just stoped using any visualisation, and used alpha/beta builds of WA3, and never really did anything then just play music.
I like it, it was fun to mess around with, but I dont hold it sentamental or anything.
