Any tips UK -> USA skipping

Is there options to tune or other servers that buffer more?

We're seeing skipping even at 96kbps/44 from some deejays.

Obviously some other server platforms allow tweaking of both client and server, but im not sure what to do with shoutcast.

Any tips on how to better tweak to handle packet loss? its a given with trans-continent broadcasting.

It's freebsd boxen p3-450 running 100mbps (dual homed full ds3 circuits at 2% inbound , 25% outbound).

Using local sc_trans at 128-192kbps has no problems.

Tweaking tips on the (client) and (server) anyone?

any ways to stretch the buffering to allow more time for packet loss or is it a udp lossy protocol and thats all there is to it?

Try having the DJs setup a local DNAS and have the main DNAS relay it.

This has been known to help out some.

okay say they run a server (dnas) locally

what do i need to do to relay off theirs?

I noticed in the freebsd conf it says relaying not implemented?

CLIENT -> local dns 192.168.100.100 port 8000/8001 (example only)

What would i put in my server to relay to his dnas?

I'm not familiar with the freebsd DNAS.

My host uses freebsd, though, and it is relaying my local DNAS.

Here is my Windows relay bot, maybe it's useful:

From the DNASs sc_serv.ini/conf configuration file:
code:
; RelayPort and RelayServer specify that you want to be a relay server.
; Relay servers act as clients to another server, and rebroadcast.
; Set RelayPort to 0, RelayServer to empty, or just leave these commented
; out to disable relay mode.
; RelayPort=8000
; RelayServer=192.168.1.58

Set relayport of the secondary DNAS to the portbase of the main DNAS.
Set relayserver of the secondary DNAS to the ip of the main DNAS.

Also, don't forget to remove the comment designator ( ; ) from the front of both lines after making the changes then restart the DNAS.

There are two ways to do this.. listen to their stream, set the output to WinAmp, and stream that.

Or in your Server config:

Quote:

; RelayPort and RelayServer specify that you want to be a relay server.
; Relay servers act as clients to another server, and rebroadcast.
; Set RelayPort to 0, RelayServer to empty, or just leave these commented
; out to disable relay mode.
; RelayPort=Their server port
; RelayServer=Their server IP
Make sure to take the ";" off the beginning of "RelayPort" and "RelayServer" to make them active.. but add them once again after you're done relaying that server.

this tip worked well.

QUESTION:

WHO IS RESPONSIBLE (in DNAS TO DNAS RELAY) for paying royalties.
Is it the original broadcaster, the DNAS (UK) or my DNAS(USA) or all?

DJ AmPs 7th September 2003 15:23

It is usually the responsibility of the broadcaster. Most stream hosts include this in their terms of aggreement to save from having royalty fees of their clients somehow passed along to them.

mrkrad 7th September 2003 20:21

great idea. Do you have a sample disclaimer to share? I dont have the legal fees (totally non for profit for UK/EU deejays) to pay for a disclaimer. Anyone wanna donate one for us freebie dudes. I dont believe in "ripping" someone elses disclaimers.
