Maynard James Keenan (Tool, A Perfect Circle), about the best ever. His forming of metaphors and artistice creativity in his work is truly amazing. Not to mention he has a great voice for expressing emotion (and not in the emo kind of way)

marvinbarcelona 4th October 2003 23:05

Billie Holliday, Ella Fitzgerald, Otis Redding, Janis Joplin, Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennett, Aretha Franklin, Woody Guthrie, Bob Dylan.

I don't really count technical ability, although some in the above list certainly have that, I count emotion, feeling and performance more than mere technincal ability.

k_rock923 5th October 2003 02:04

i say hetfield. some of his lyrics are amazing. ever read the lyrics to disposable heroes, master of puppets, one, for whom the bell tolls, . . . and justice for all, or basically anything else before the black album. for some reason it surprises a lot of people but he writes some of the most meaningful lyrics you'll ever hear. he sings about political issues and surprisingly enough, he was written numerous anti-war and anti-drug songs.

and unlike a lot of metal singers, he can actually sing and even when he is doing his growl thing, hes still singing and not just random screaming.

i suppose everyone has noticed that in every single one of these threads ive blindly suppored metallica. no accident. not too many bands can match what they pulled off before they sold out. in terms of music, lyrics, and pure energy, they kick major ass.

Gordon Freeman 1st May 2004 11:52

Iron Maiden - Bruce Dickinson & Blaze Bayley

have you ever listened to tool? at least in my eyes, they're better in every angle you mention there, with the possible exception of "anti-war and anti-drug songs", since their lyrics tend to have far deeper meaning.

not dissing metallica, just making a suggestion :)

I can't help but read that as John Maynard Keynes...

Gordon Freeman 2nd May 2004 09:40

is it better now?

MidnightViper88 2nd May 2004 10:42

Doug Robb - Hoobastank
Brandon Boyd - incubus
James Keenan - Tool/A Perfect Circle
Chris Cornell - Soundgarden/Audioslave
Eddie Vedder - Pearl Jam

Some of my favorites anyway...

corkhead0 2nd May 2004 21:19

Mikael Akerfeldt - Opeth

He does everything from haunting clean vocals to agressive growls.

d0rk 6th May 2004 05:35

Otis Redding, Louis Armstrong, Freddy Mercury, Robert Plant, Bon Scott, Geoff Tate, Brandon Boyd, Maynard, Chris Cornell, Bono, and for some reason I like Dave Grohl's voice.

shakey_snake 7th May 2004 06:38

Leadbelly

the most interesting singer is Robert Johnson, they say he sold his soul to the devil to be able to play guitar, and every now and then he'd hit an unearthly falseto that legend has is the demons inside him singing.

Norcobrau 13th May 2004 05:01

Tom Waits is great, but anyone who's ever been in the room when Gene Ween sings knows it's him.

Volospion 13th May 2004 20:22

Either Robert Plant or Paul Rodgers

webthing 15th May 2004 13:12

Roger Daltrey - The Who

Good old Roger should be on my list in the top ten. :D

If we're going by those standards, then you have to include Kurt Cobain. Everyone of his songs was ripped straight from his life and were testaments to the pain and suffering he endured. Don't believe me? Check out You Know You're Right and Lithium. Also, Rivers Cuomo from Weezer can be really good, like in "The Good Life" from Pinkerton and Slob from Maladroit. That's just my two cents at least.

And despite my above statements, I also agree with many of the choices previously mentioned, including Maynard James Keenan, Eddie Mercury, and Frank Sinatra. Ol' Blue Eyes was definitely one of the greats.
