playback problem

I downloaded an mp3 (RIAA beware). I try to play it on WinAmp and all I see are the lines going up and down and the title of the song streaming. I get no sound. How can I get sound? How can I control the sound volume using WinAmp?
Thanks,
diowrite

Funny

It seems as if everyone else with a new post gets help but I do not.
This is not very fair. If there is an easy answer to my problem, so be it. However, I have tried everything that I know to get the sound and volume from WinAmp with no success.
I would appreciate some help.

Can you hear all other sounds ok, eg. system / windows event sounds, etc?
Are the main & wave sliders are up high enough in Windows Volume Control?

Does this mp3 play ok in other players, eg. WMP?

Is the volume slider in the main winamp window up high enough?

Is one of WaveOut or DirectSound the active output plugin, and not DiskWriter or WMA Output?
Winamp -> Prefs (Ctrl+P) -> Plugins -> Output
The hi-lighted Output plugin is the active one.

If you require further help, please also provide the following info:
Relevant system specs: cpu, ram, soundcard, Windows OS, DirectX version.
Winamp version #
A list of any 3rd-party Winamp plugins installed.

Thanks DJ. I just replied with all the data you wanted and this damn message board did not record it.
I'll try again.

DJ:
I cannot hear any sounds at all.
Main and wave sliders are up ok.
Mp3 does not play in WMP.
Volume slider in WinAmp is up ok.
Direct Sound is the plug-in selected.
Now do not laugh:
Pentium 2 MMX, 300mhz
192mb RAM
Analog Devices 1816 Sound Controller
Windows 98 SE
DirectX 6.1a
WinAmp 2.91
out mp3.exe and aspi32.exe downloaded

Thanks for any help. Houston...I think we have a problem(s).

Playback Problem Solved

Hey DJ:
I thought of one more thing. I checked the connections at the back of the computer and the connector to speakers and headphones had worked itself loose. I plugged it in. I played the MP3 on WinAmp and voila! I got great sound.
I feel dumb but I'm rockin' now.
This board and all the help is great.
I said to myself, "There must be something obviously wrong here."
What have I missed? Loose connections! At least it isn't something bad!
