From W2 to W3

Hi all,

I just got finished installing W3 after reading about all its features and how it basically supports all the old W2 stuff like skins, visualisations (once you download the component) etc.

But now im bothered by a couple of things(I did search the forums for these incase your wondering.. couldn't find anything, hopefully not due to incompetance):
Wheres the "Fire" mode for the spectrum analyser, and all those other tweaky things?
-Just as a note i'd like to say the new oscilliscope is much cooler :D

Why don't old Winamp2 skins cover the new playlist?
You cant seriously claim complete backward compatibility with W2 skins if they dont cover the playlist :(

Oh well, nothing really big here... so overall congrats on keeping winamp the best music player. :winamp:

The media library is awesome btw :D

Winamp3 is not a upgrade from Winamp 2, it is built from the ground up.

Options for the built in vis. will be added to future release of Winamp3

Why doesn't Winamp3 do XYZ like Winamp 2.x did?
Winamp3 is a complete re-write form Winamp 2.x. Therefore all features from Winamp 2.x would need to be re-implemented in Winamp3. Due to time limitations on Nullsoft a lot of the non-critical features from Winamp 2.x were left out of the original release. These features will be returning over time. They may not be in the next release, but most, if not all of Winamp 2.x's features are coming to Winamp3.
The WA3 playlist has new features that the WA2 playlist were not designed for (side car, Quick Selection box, etc.). Therefore WA3 replaces the playlist with a "generic" WA3 playlist. Only the player window and EQ will be skined with WA2 skins.

Will my Winamp 2.XX skins still work?
Winamp3 has limited Winamp2 skin support. Though there are Winamp2 Skin converters that work better then Winamp3's built in support. Try this link.
NOTE: I have not had success with the skin converter referenced in the above link. :(

Ahh, cool :)

Thanx a lot

That is because it is not intended for use with the official public release of Winamp3 (yet), as indicated by Plague in this post in that thread. ;)

Actually, I occasionally check in that thread from time to time, looking to see when it will work properly and bug-free with the Winamp3 public release. But there haven't been any posts concerning any updates/progress in over 6 months now. The reason I "occasionally" check though is because I know that the Winamp.com database for publishing components is still all messed up and I would also host that one at my site (once bug-free and final), same as I do now with Yonido's J-key component, which cannot be officially published at Winamp.com due to the messed up publishing database.

Anyway, it looks as if there has been no progress for months now on that converter, so when I have time I'll check with the other Mods, and perhaps we will have to remove the linked reference to the converter in that thread from the section of the FAQ that deals with Will my Winamp 2.XX skins still work?. I personally think it should be removed from the FAQ since it is not viable but I will not remove it until I discuss it with the other Mods.

Nunzio390...

Thank You for the info.

I am leaving for my vacation on Squirrel Island Maine (picture) and will not be back until next week. Bye :)

Nunzio390 28th September 2003 16:12

OK JM. Enjoy your vacation!

Also, Plague has just replied to indicate that it's a completely dead project. The FAQ has now been updated...

Winamp3 has limited Winamp 2.xx skin support. Some Winamp 2.xx skins will work in Winamp3 but will only skin the main component window and the Equalizer. Some older Winamp 2.xx skins may not work at all.
We will not mislead people any longer now, and perhaps we will no longer need to constantly "explain" about how WA2 skins only skin the main window and the EQ in WA3. That is providing people actually READ the damned FAQ's for a change.

Of course not too long from now, Winamp 2 will support Winamp3 skins, it is called Winamp5 right now, slated to be released early November. Stay tuned. :D

Nunzio390 28th September 2003 19:16

Yep. That's true too. ;)

Winamp 5 is coming along good. Looks like the big launch date is pushed to early November. This is taking forever. But at least it'll give us time to make the it pretty solid. Good times. While they last.

Oh crap! I just noticed your sig! FusionAmp is my favorite WA 2 skin (actually the only one I use) ;)

You've got a WA3 version now. Gotta try it!

Well, thank you for your kind words. I think Mr Egg also uses it quit a bit, but I could be wrong.

Apart from the skins showing up on my winamp when reviewing skins, it's the only one I use also, but I have a hard time deciding which version. :p
I kinda like the MiniFusion mode though, makes winamp look like my avatar. :D

Nunzio390 29th September 2003 00:34

Oh yeah. DJ is in fact the guy who turned me onto your Classic Winamp skin, and I've been using it ever since. Hey! You'd better let The Egg Man know about your WA3 version too. I'm certain he'll use it.

P.S.

Your Classic Winamp FusionAmp skin is a PERFECT color match to the madLyrics plugin too (which I use all the time) > screenshot
