I just got my friend to do the shopping.
Here is a nice list of things that one should NEVER EVER EVER go for the generic equivs:

icecream
coffee
toilett paper/tissues
soap
2 minute noodles
instant soup
cheeeezzz

I feel for you, sid. That's absolutely true. My two cents: chocolate syrup, must be Hershey's, I will accept NO substitutes. And Chef Boyardee's Raviolos(sp?), generics just aren't the same.

I hate generic coffee and noodle. Is it just me or does Ramen taste like aged plastic?

Rich foods. nearly everything i have ever had from them is good, and generally really really cheap as well.

never ever get those wierd brands of soda you've never heard of. theres a reason you've never heard of them

Ya just need to go to Costco! There, the normal stuff is cheap, and the generic stuff is REALLY cheap. I fed 8 people with $1.62 (total) for a breakfast with Ramen and eggs. Sure, it wasn't that good, but it was CHEAP! Of course, you can't buy that small of an amount at Costco, but it's still great.
