How do you feel about communism?, ... the idealized version

I'm not talking about the Stalin type dictatorship. I mean the idealized version of communism. Is it a good idea? And if it's not, what makes it bad?

To the Stalin type, what, aside from greed, make it go wrong? Corruption? And why is the word communist evil now?

WHEREamI 23rd October 2003 19:15

communism is incompatible with humans.
otherwise an excellent idea.

communism is "evil" because noboby has ever done it right on a large scale. it's been done plenty right on small scales, with a small group of trusted people... but humans are inherently greedy. it's how we evolved.

communism is stupid. notice how its never worked

gaekwad2 23rd October 2003 21:50

Stalin turned communism into a religion (he came from seminary) and the party into a copy of the good old catholic church, complete with inquisition.
Trotsky and others always knew that it would only work on a global scale and not if it stayed limited to an underdeveloped country like Russia.
Capitalism and Liberalism don't work either, or do they deliver what they promise? (Ask one of the 80% of all people around the world who live in poverty!)

How does meaisl8again feel about you stealing her thread? Not just the idea of the thread but a ^c^v version of it?

Communism is a good idea but that's all it is. An idea. One that will not work. It would work if we were all drones, though.

godoncrack 23rd October 2003 22:22

so we should all give up our individual identies and play follow the leader?

Xerxes 23rd October 2003 22:51

So we should all become the borg? A selfless hive mind?

By the way, what's the deal with randomly grafting threads from one forum to another? :I

Actually those social constructs can be explained and they have nothing to do with communism or altruism. It get s a bit complicated but each individual does act selfishly to enable it's genes to survive and not altruistically as it appears. It's something to do with being more related to their brothers and sisters than their Queen. Read The Selfish Gene it's explained in there pretty well :).

gaekwad2 24th October 2003 08:32

People love to declare the status quo as "law of nature" (or of god). People act selfishly because most social systems reward selfishness.
The main error of communists is that they wanted to create the perfect state (as opposed to Marx who wanted to destroy it) and this led directly into dictatorship.

Cylob 24th October 2003 10:19

Do you want communism because you despise the rich and powerful? If so, just bring out the guillotine every now and then. Being more civilised now, we'll just kill the obnoxious ones (well they asked for it).

Yeah, in the late 1800's it must have sounded beatiful (No more Owning, No more Snobs etc.) but the problem is that people WANT to own. The human race is a collector, a owner in it's nature, so "sharing" things have never worked very good, exept kibbuzes (or whatever they're called) and Kazaa;).

xzxzzx 24th October 2003 17:14

Communism is the greatest governmental system ever invented.

Too bad it doesn't, and never will, work.
