Forum Idea -> How To Make People Learn To Use The Edit Button

I am not sure if the type of forums that are used here are the same type as my example, but oh well. I joined a new forum not too long ago, http://aaotracker.4players.de/index.php , and I found out that they allow unlimited editing time, but you cannot post two posts in a row in the same thread. I thought it was a good idea. Everyone has to use the edit button, or wait for someone else to post to correct their mistake. Anyways, just thought i'd pass it along.

It's not vb, but vb is fairly hackable so i have no doubt it could be done here.

I do see a few issues with that idea though. Imagine you post a question in one of the tech support forums, no-one answers for a week, the thread's now on page 5 so you try to bump it. Sorry, but you're not allowed to post twice on a row...The only way to get it back up on the front page where people will see it is to start a new thread.

Or, someone posts in a thread regarding their new skin (or whatever), but forgets to attach the image. Since you arent allowed to attach new images while editing (just change/remove the image if you've already attached it), it would mean they'd have to wait until someone replys before they can attach, or start a new thread...Pretty damn anoying.

I can think of a couple of other situations where not being able to post twice in a row would cause problems too.

I'm with Atmo. It seems like a good idea, but what with the "real" reason for the forums being tech help and skinning, the only place it would do good is in the Community part.

for the tech support ?: what's so bad about making another thread? obviously nobody saw the first one, it's on page five.

for the skin: you can add attachments with edit on that forum, I forgot to mention that.

You mean being bombarded with "use the edit button" posts isn't enough to make someone use the edit button?

And it certainly would kill many of the game threads, especially the pic oriented ones. Some of you might not see that as a bad thing. Most of you who think that are hypocrites. :)

Well, it clutters things up, and makes searching harder.

I have thought of a way it could work here though. If there was a time limit (say 30 minutes for example) before you could post again in the same thread (unless someone else replys) it would mean people could bump their thread after that time if need be. Combined with the ability to add attachments using the edit function it might work. It does mean uploading multiple attachments would be near impossible though, unless someone has a lot of patience.

All that to maybe stop a few double posts seems like a lot of stuffing around to me though...

no shit!

dlinkwit27 26th October 2003 23:47

:D (so subtract two posts from my postcount, big deal ) I just felt like making a new post for each new joke. I coulda made a new thread for each.

Coman 27th October 2003 01:43

hahaha we just don't like when new members do it but when an old one does it it's ok

Trigear 27th October 2003 05:11

that IS kind of hypocritical. but a lot of us are guilty of that same mentality (notice i said "us" and not "you"). for instance, when is spam spam, and when is spam just a member posting links?

Cognition 27th October 2003 05:51

There forums are pretty good anyway, as they are. I've certainly seen a lot worse.

basicly, yes. :) anyways I thought it was a nifty idea, but if it doesn't make it thru, no skin off my back :) seeing how a certain iranian is gone, i don't foresee much problems with this in the future anyway.
