how do you remember things
 

The thing is i'm studying japanese, and we have all those damn chinese scribbles we have to learn by heart, which i'm having severe difficulties with....

So I was wondering if any of you guys had some good techniches for learning stuff by heart?

As far as characters, I look for something that they look like and rename them that in my head. For instance, when I play Mah-jjong, I look at the symbol and see things like a rooster or crooked house.
